Verse-by-Verse Commentary (Jeremiah 10:16 – 11:14)
Jeremiah 10:16
Verse: The portion of Jacob is not like them for he is the former of all things and Israel is the rod of his inheritance The LORD of hosts is his name
-
English Explanation: This verse contrasts the useless idols of pagan nations with the true God of Israel. “The portion of Jacob” refers to the Almighty Creator who chose Jacob’s descendants as His unique possession. Unlike man-made idols, He is the Master Architect who created everything, and His supreme power is reflected in His title, “The LORD of hosts.”
-
Jeremiah 10:17
Verse: Gather up thy wares out of the land O inhabitant of the fortress
-
English Explanation: A sudden prophetic warning shifts the tone to the impending Babylonian siege. Jeremiah tells the citizens of Jerusalem (the “inhabitant of the fortress”) to pack up their belongings and prepare for exile, as the enemy is quickly approaching their gates.
-
Jeremiah 10:18
Verse: For thus saith the LORD Behold I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once and will distress them that they may find it so
-
English Explanation: God uses a powerful metaphor of a sling to illustrate how violently and suddenly He will evict the people from their homeland. The judgment will not be gradual; it will be a sharp, painful distress designed to make them finally realize the consequences of their rebellion.
-
Jeremiah 10:19
Verse: Woe is me for my hurt my wound is grievous but I said Truly this is a grief and I must bear it
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah speaks here, expressing deep sorrow on behalf of his nation. He feels the agonizing pain of Judah’s imminent destruction. Yet, there is a sober acceptance of divine judgment; the prophet acknowledges that this suffering is justified due to the nation’s sins.
-
Jeremiah 10:20
Verse: My tabernacle is spoiled and all my cords are broken my children are gone forth of me and they are not there is none to stretch forth my tent any more and to set up my curtains
-
English Explanation: This verse paints a vivid picture of a destroyed home using nomadic imagery. The tent (representing Jerusalem and its temple) is collapsed, its supporting cords are snapped, and the children (the citizens) have been taken away into captivity, leaving no one behind to rebuild.
-
Jeremiah 10:21
Verse: For the pastors are become brutish and have not sought the LORD therefore they shall not prosper and all their flocks shall be scattered
-
English Explanation: The failure of Judah’s leaders is explicitly blamed here. The “pastors” (kings, priests, and rulers) acted foolishly and completely neglected to seek God’s guidance. Because of their spiritual blindness, leadership failed, leading directly to the scattering and ruin of the people (“flocks”).
-
Jeremiah 10:22
Verse: Behold the noise of the bruit is come and a great commotion out of the north country to make the cities of Judah desolate and a den of dragons
-
English Explanation: The prophet announces that a terrifying rumor or report (“bruit”) has turned into reality. A massive army is invading from the north (Babylon). Their march will turn the wealthy, bustling cities of Judah into empty ruins inhabited only by wild jackals (“dragons”).
-
Jeremiah 10:23
Verse: O LORD I know that the way of man is not in himself it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps
-
English Explanation: This is a famous, foundational biblical truth. Jeremiah acknowledges that human beings do not possess the ultimate wisdom or authority to govern their own destiny or choose their own moral path successfully. True direction and moral alignment can only come from God.
-
Jeremiah 10:24
Verse: O LORD correct me but with judgment not in thine anger lest thou bring me to nothing
-
English Explanation: Knowing that Judah deserves discipline, Jeremiah prays for mercy. He begs God to correct and discipline them with measured justice (“judgment”) rather than destructive fury (“anger”), which would completely wipe the nation out of existence.
-
Jeremiah 10:25
Verse: Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not and upon the families that call not on thy name for they have eaten up Jacob and devoured him and consumed him and have made his habitation desolate
-
English Explanation: While accepting internal correction, the prophet appeals for divine justice against pagan oppressor nations. These godless kingdoms ruthlessly devoured the people of Israel and wiped out their homeland, showing no mercy, and thus deserve God’s ultimate wrath.
-
Jeremiah 11:1
Verse: The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying
-
English Explanation: This introduces a new prophetic discourse in Chapter 11. It establishes that the message following this is not Jeremiah’s personal opinion but an authoritative revelation directly given by God.
-
Urdu Explanation:
Jeremiah 11:2
Verse: Hear ye the words of this covenant and speak unto the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem
-
English Explanation: God issues a call to attention. The leaders and citizens of Judah and Jerusalem are instructed to listen carefully to the terms of the original Mosaic covenant, which they had long ignored and broken.
-
Jeremiah 11:3
Verse: And say thou unto them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant
-
English Explanation: The message starts with a stark, serious warning. Relying on Deuteronomic law, God proclaims a spiritual and physical curse upon anyone who refuses to listen to and obey the commandments laid out in His holy covenant.
-
Jeremiah 11:4
Verse: Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt from the iron furnace saying Obey my voice and do them according to all which I command you so shall ye be my people and I will be your God
-
English Explanation: God reminds them of their historical roots—specifically the Exodus from Egypt, described metaphorically as an “iron furnace” due to its intense cruelty and suffering. The original relationship agreement was simple: total obedience leads to them being His treasured people, and Him being their protective God.
-
Jeremiah 11:5
Verse: That I may perform the oath which I have sworn unto your fathers to give them a land flowing with milk and honey as it is this day Then answered I and said So be it O LORD
-
English Explanation: God highlights His own absolute faithfulness in keeping His promises, having successfully brought them into Canaan—a rich, fertile land flowing with milk and honey. In response to God’s standard of justice, Jeremiah submissively answers, “Amen” (“So be it, O LORD”), affirming his agreement.
-
Jeremiah 11:6
Verse: Then the LORD said unto me Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem saying Hear ye the words of this covenant and do them
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah is sent on a public preaching mission. He is commanded to take this message to every city in Judah and out into the open streets of Jerusalem, emphasizing not just hearing the law, but actively practicing it.
-
Jeremiah 11:7
Verse: For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt even unto this day rising early and protesting saying Obey my voice
-
English Explanation: The phrase “rising early” is an idiom displaying God’s persistent, loving, and continuous warnings through His prophets throughout Israel’s history. From the moment they left Egypt up to Jeremiah’s time, God never stopped calling them back to obedience.
-
Jeremiah 11:8
Verse: Yet they obeyed not nor inclined their ear but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant which I commanded them to do but they did them not
-
English Explanation: Despite God’s relentless tracking, the generations willfully ignored Him. They preferred their own corrupt, stubborn desires over God’s commands. Consequently, because they triggered the disobedience clause of the covenant, the promised punishments and judgments must now be carried out.
-
Jeremiah 11:9
Verse: And the LORD said unto me A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem
-
English Explanation: God reveals to Jeremiah that the spiritual rebellion is not an accidental slip; it is a full-blown, organized “conspiracy.” The political and religious elite of Judah have mutually agreed to reject God’s authority and turn away from Him.
-
Jeremiah 11:10
Verse: They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers which refused to hear my words and they went after other gods to serve them the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers
-
English Explanation: The current generation has relapsed into the same idolatrous sins that destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel years prior. Both the northern house (Israel) and the southern house (Judah) are equally guilty of completely breaking the sacred marriage-like contract made at Sinai.
-
Jeremiah 11:11
Verse: Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will bring evil upon them which they shall not be able to escape and though they shall cry unto me I will not hearken unto them
-
Explanation: Because the covenant is shattered, judgment is now locked into place. God states that a disaster (the Babylonian invasion) is approaching from which there will be no escape route. Because they ignored His voice for centuries, He will refuse to listen to their panicked cries for help when the crisis strikes.
-
Jeremiah 11:12
Verse: Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble
-
English Explanation: When God turns His back, the people will desperately run to their false pagan idols for deliverance. However, this highlights the tragic irony of idolatry: the fake gods they burned incense to will remain completely silent and useless during the destruction.
-
Jeremiah 11:13
Verse: For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods O Judah and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing even altars to burn incense unto Baal
-
English Explanation: The scale of Judah’s spiritual corruption is laid bare. Their polytheism was so rampant that almost every single town had its own local patron god, and virtually every street corner in Jerusalem contained a pagan altar dedicated to the shameful cult of Baal.
-
Jeremiah 11:14
Verse: Therefore pray not thou for this people neither lift up a cry or prayer for them for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble
-
English Explanation: In a shocking directive, God commands Jeremiah to stop interceding or praying for Judah. The point of no return has been reached; the national sin is so systemic that mercy is off the table, and divine justice must run its course.
-
