jeremiah Chapter یرمیاہ باب 27

Verse-by-Verse Commentary and Explanation

Jeremiah 26:23

Verse: And they fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king who slew him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.

English Explanation

This verse highlights the severe danger faithful prophets faced during the reign of King Jehoiakim. Urijah, another prophet who spoke the truth, fled to Egypt for safety. However, the king’s men tracked him down, extradited him, and executed him. To further dishonor him, his body was thrown into the burial grounds of the common people rather than given a respectful burial. This shows the hostile environment in which Jeremiah was operating.

Jeremiah 26:24

Verse: Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

English Explanation

Despite the execution of Urijah, God protected Jeremiah through a powerful political ally named Ahikam, the son of Shaphan. Ahikam used his influence and status to shield Jeremiah from the angry mob and the royal court, ensuring that Jeremiah was not handed over to be executed. It shows God’s sovereign protection over His messengers until their work is finished.

Jeremiah 27:1

Verse: In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word unto Jeremiah from the LORD saying

English Explanation

This verse sets the historical chronological framework for the prophecy that follows. The message came directly from Yahweh to Jeremiah during the early years of Jehoiakim’s reign (though chronologically, the events of chapter 27 relate heavily to setting the stage for Zedekiah’s era, establishing the divine decree of Babylonian dominance early on).

Jeremiah 27:2

Verse: Thus saith the LORD to me Make thee bonds and yokes and put them upon thy neck

English Explanation

God commands Jeremiah to perform a prophetic object lesson. He is told to make literal wooden or iron neck yokes and bonds (harnesses used for oxen) and wear them on his own neck. This dramatic visual aid symbolized the upcoming political and physical subjugation of the nations under the rule of Babylon.

Jeremiah 27:3

Verse: And send them to the king of Edom and to the king of Moab and to the king of the Ammonites and to the king of Tyrus and to the king of Zidon by the hand of the messengers which come to Jerusalem unto Zedekiah king of Judah

English Explanation

Jeremiah is instructed to send these symbolic yokes to the neighboring foreign kings (Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon) via their diplomats who had gathered in Jerusalem. These nations were meeting with King Zedekiah to plot a rebellion against Babylon. God’s message was a direct warning against their political conspiracy.

Jeremiah 27:4

Verse: And command them to say unto their masters Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Thus shall ye say unto your masters

English Explanation

God establishes His supreme authority. He tells the messengers to explicitly declare to their pagan royal masters that this message is from the “LORD of hosts” (the Commander of Heaven’s Armies) and “the God of Israel,” emphasizing that He rules over all nations, not just the Jews.

Jeremiah 27:5

Verse: I have made the earth the man and the beast that are upon the ground by my great power and by my outstretched arm and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.

English Explanation

God reminds the world of His identity as the Creator. Because He created the earth, mankind, and animals with His immense power, He holds the absolute right to distribute land, kingdoms, and authority to whomever He pleases. Human rulers only rule by divine permission.

Jeremiah 27:6

Verse: And now have I given all these lands unto the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon my servant and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.

English Explanation

In a shocking declaration, God calls King Nebuchadnezzar—a pagan king—His “servant.” This means Nebuchadnezzar was an instrument chosen by God to execute His judgment. God declares that He has handed control of all these regional territories, and even the wild beasts, over to Babylon.

Jeremiah 27:7

Verse: And all nations shall serve him and his son and his son’s son until the very time of his land come and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.

English Explanation

God establishes a timeline for Babylonian supremacy. The nations must serve Nebuchadnezzar, his son (Evil-Merodach), and his grandson (Belshazzar). Babylon’s dominance would last for three generations until its own time of judgment arrived, at which point Babylon itself would be conquered by other great nations (the Medes and Persians).

Jeremiah 27:8

Verse: And it shall come to pass that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon that nation will I punish saith the LORD with the sword and with the famine and with the pestilence until I have consumed them by his hand.

English Explanation

Resistance to Babylon is presented as resistance to God’s ordained decree. Any nation that refuses to submit to Nebuchadnezzar’s yoke will face severe divine judgment: war (the sword), starvation (famine), and disease (pestilence) until they are completely destroyed by Babylonian military power.

Jeremiah 27:9

Verse: Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets nor to your diviners nor to your dreamers nor to your enchanters nor to your sorcerers which speak unto you saying Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon

English Explanation

God warns the people and foreign nations not to listen to their spiritual guides, false prophets, fortune-tellers, dreamers, and occult practitioners. These individuals were falsely reassuring the leaders that they could successfully resist Babylon and would not have to serve Nebuchadnezzar.

Jeremiah 27:10

Verse: For they prophesy a lie unto you to remove you far from your land and that I should drive you out and ye should perish.

English Explanation

The messages of these false prophets are outright lies. God explains the consequence of listening to them: if the people rebel based on these false predictions, it will only lead to total disaster, forcing God to drive them out of their homeland to perish in exile.

Jeremiah 27:11

Verse: But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him those will I let remain still in their own land saith the LORD and they shall till it and dwell therein.

English Explanation

God offers a path of survival. Any nation that willingly surrenders, accepts the yoke of Babylonian rule, and pays tribute will be spared from destruction. God will allow them to stay in their own native lands, cultivate their soil, and live in relative peace. Submission to God’s judgment brings mercy.

Jeremiah 27:12

Verse: I spake also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words saying Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him and his people and live.

English Explanation

Jeremiah delivers this exact same message directly to Zedekiah, the current puppet king of Judah. He urges the king to submit to the King of Babylon honestly and willingly. Survival for Judah and the city of Jerusalem depended entirely on political surrender to Babylon as an act of obedience to God.

Jeremiah 27:13

Verse: Why will ye die thou and thy people by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence as the LORD hath spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon?

English Explanation

Jeremiah pleads passionately with King Zedekiah and the citizens of Judah. He asks why they would intentionally choose death through war, starvation, and disease when God has already made it clear that these horrors await anyone who rebels against the Babylonian empire.

Jeremiah 27:14

Verse: Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you saying Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon for they prophesy a lie unto you.

English Explanation

Jeremiah repeats his urgent warning: do not listen to the popular, nationalistic prophets who are claiming that Judah will successfully break free from Babylon. Their optimistic messages are completely detached from God’s reality; they are propagating dangerous lies.

Jeremiah 27:15

Verse: For I have not sent them saith the LORD yet they prophesy a lie in my name that I might drive you out and that ye might perish ye and the prophets that prophesy unto you.

Explanation

God explicitly disowns these false prophets. Though they claim to speak in the name of Yahweh, God asserts He never commissioned them. Listening to their unsanctioned lies will result in divine eviction from the land, leading to the destruction of both the deceptive prophets and the people who believed them.

Jeremiah 27:16

Verse: Also I spake to the priests and to all this people saying Thus saith the LORD Hearken not to the words of your prophets that prophesy unto you saying Behold the vessels of the LORD’s house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon for they prophesy a lie unto you.

English Explanation

Jeremiah addresses the religious leadership (priests) and the general public. The false prophets were predicting that the sacred golden vessels stolen during previous Babylonian raids would soon be miraculously returned. Jeremiah labels this prophecy as another lie designed to give false hope.

Jeremiah 27:17

Verse: Hearken not unto them serve the king of Babylon and live wherefore should this city be laid waste?

English Explanation

Jeremiah urges them once again to ignore the popular lies, accept foreign dominion, and choose life. He reasons with them practically: why bring complete ruin, burning, and desolation upon the historic holy city of Jerusalem when it can easily be averted through compliance?

Jeremiah 27:18

Verse: But if they be prophets and if the word of the LORD be with them let them now make intercession to the LORD of hosts that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD and in the house of the king of Judah and at Jerusalem go not to Babylon.

English Explanation

Jeremiah issues a challenge to test the validity of these false prophets. If they genuinely possess God’s word, they should stop predicting the return of already stolen items and instead pray (intercede) that the remaining treasures in the Temple and palace do not get plundered next.

Jeremiah 27:19

Verse: For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars and concerning the sea and concerning the bases and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city

English Explanation

This verse sets up the divine decree regarding the heavy bronze architectural elements of Solomon’s Temple—the massive bronze pillars (Jachin and Boaz), the large ceremonial pool (the bronze Sea), and the movable stands (bases), alongside any remaining valuable holy vessels left in Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 27:20

Verse: Which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took not when he carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah from Jerusalem to Babylon and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem

English Explanation

God references the historic first waves of deportation when King Nebuchadnezzar captured King Jeconiah (also known as Jehoiachin) and exiled Judah’s elite nobility to Babylon. During that initial invasion, Babylon left the heavy bronze structures behind, which the false prophets assumed were safe, setting the stage for God’s ultimate correction in the subsequent verses.
