Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation
Jeremiah 27:21
Verse: Yea thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the LORD and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem
-
English Explanation: God addresses the remaining sacred items in the Temple and royal palaces. While false prophets claimed these articles would soon return from Babylon, God warns that the remaining treasures are still under threat. It highlights that partial obedience or denial of divine judgment does not protect material wealth when a nation is spiritually bankrupt.
-
Jeremiah 27:22
Verse: They shall be carried to Babylon and there shall they be until the day that I visit them saith the LORD then will I bring them up and restore them to this place
-
English Explanation: This verse delivers a strict prophecy of judgment but ends with a promise of restoration. God declares that everything left behind will be taken to Babylon. However, they will not be lost forever; God establishes a timeline (“until the day that I visit them”) after which He will personally restore them to Jerusalem. This emphasizes God’s ultimate sovereignty over history.
-
Chapter 28
Jeremiah 28:1
Verse: And it came to pass the same year in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah in the fourth year and in the fifth month that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet which was of Gibeon spake unto me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and of all the people saying
-
English Explanation: The setting moves to the fourth year of King Zedekiah’s reign. Hananiah, a popular but false prophet from Gibeon, publicly confronts Jeremiah in the Temple. By staging this confrontation in front of priests and common folk, Hananiah seeks maximum public impact to undermine Jeremiah’s message of submission to Babylon.
-
Jeremiah 28:2
Verse: Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts the God of Israel saying I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon
-
English Explanation: Hananiah boldly claims to speak directly for God, using the traditional prophetic formula. He delivers exactly what the political elite and the public want to hear: a declaration that God has shattered the political and military oppression (“the yoke”) of King Nebuchadnezzar.
-
Jeremiah 28:3
Verse: Within two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of the LORD’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried them to Babylon
-
English Explanation: To make his prophecy sound authentic, Hananiah attaches a specific timeline: two full years. He promises that the plundered temple vessels will be miraculously returned, directly contradicting Jeremiah’s earlier warnings that the exile would last for decades.
-
Jeremiah 28:4
Verse: And I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah with all the captives of Judah that went into Babylon saith the LORD for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon
-
English Explanation: Hananiah raises nationalistic hopes further by predicting the return of the exiled King Jeconiah (Jehoiachin) along with the rest of the captives. He repeats the phrase “I will break the yoke,” exploiting the people’s desire for immediate political liberation over genuine spiritual repentance.
-
Jeremiah 28:5
Verse: Then the prophet Jeremiah said unto the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the LORD
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah responds publicly to Hananiah’s challenge. The scene remains the Temple courts, surrounded by the religious leaders and citizens of Jerusalem, setting up a definitive public test of prophetic authenticity.
-
Jeremiah 28:6
Verse: Even the prophet Jeremiah said Amen the LORD do so the LORD perform thy words which thou hast prophesied to bring again the vessels of the LORD’s house and all that is carried away captive from Babylon into this place
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah’s response begins with “Amen” (Let it be so). He genuinely wishes that Hananiah’s words were true, as Jeremiah loved his nation and took no pleasure in preaching destruction. However, desiring peace does not change God’s revealed truth.
-
Jeremiah 28:7
Verse: Nevertheless hear thou now this word that I speak in thine ears and in the ears of all the people
-
English Explanation: After expressing his personal hope for peace, Jeremiah pivots with the word “Nevertheless.” He commands Hananiah and the assembled crowd to listen to historical and theological reality rather than comforting delusions.
-
Jeremiah 28:8
Verse: The prophets that have been before me and before thee of old prophesied both against many countries and against great kingdoms of war and of evil and of pestilence
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah reminds the people of biblical prophetic tradition. True prophets of old historically preached messages of judgment, war, famine, and plague against sinful nations. A message of doom was historically consistent with a nation that had violated God’s covenant.
-
Jeremiah 28:9
Verse: The prophet which prophesieth of peace when the word of the prophet shall come to pass then shall the prophet be known that the LORD hath truly sent him
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah lays down the ultimate test for a prophet of prosperity and peace: fulfillment. While a prophet of doom is vindicated when judgment falls, a prophet who promises unmerited peace must have their words perfectly fulfilled before they can be believed as sent by God.
-
Jeremiah 28:10
Verse: Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck and brake it
-
English Explanation: Unable to win the theological argument, Hananiah resorts to a dramatic, physical demonstration. Jeremiah had been wearing a wooden yoke on his neck as a visual aid of Babylonian subjugation. Hananiah violently removes and breaks it, attempting to visually mock Jeremiah’s prophecy.
-
Jeremiah 28:11
Verse: And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people saying Thus saith the LORD Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years And the prophet Jeremiah went his way
-
English Explanation: Hananiah uses his theatrical act to reiterate his false prophecy that God will shatter Nebuchadnezzar’s power within two years. Remarkably, Jeremiah does not engage in an angry shouting match; he quietly walks away, leaving the matter in God’s hands.
-
Jeremiah 28:12
Verse: Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah saying
-
English Explanation: Sometime after the public confrontation, God speaks to Jeremiah privately. God does not leave His true prophet undefended or His word mocked; He provides a counter-message that ups the stakes of the judgment.
-
Jeremiah 28:13
Verse: Go and tell Hananiah saying Thus saith the LORD Thou hast broken the yokes of wood but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron
-
English Explanation: God sends Jeremiah back with a stern reply. Hananiah broke a temporary, symbolic yoke of wood, but his lies have only guaranteed a harsher, inescapable reality for the people: a yoke of iron. Human rebellion against God’s discipline always makes the consequences heavier.
-
Jeremiah 28:14
Verse: For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and they shall serve him and I have given him the beasts of the field also
-
English Explanation: God reinforces His total sovereignty. He explicitly states that He is the one who granted Nebuchadnezzar control over the nations. The iron yoke signifies an unyielding, unbreakable political captivity. Even nature (“the beasts of the field”) is subject to this divinely orchestrated geopolitical shift.
-
Jeremiah 28:15
Verse: Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet Hear now Hananiah The LORD hath not sent thee but thou makest this people to trust in a lie
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah directly confronts Hananiah with his spiritual crime. The danger was not just that Hananiah was mistaken, but that he actively forced the people to rely on a lie, giving them false security which prevented them from repenting.
-
Jeremiah 28:16
Verse: Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will cast thee from off the face of the earth this year thou shalt die because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD
-
English Explanation: God issues an immediate sentence of capital punishment on the false prophet. Because Hananiah taught rebellion against God’s decree under the guise of prophecy, he is sentenced to die within that very calendar year.
-
Jeremiah 28:17
Verse: So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month
-
English Explanation: The ultimate historical vindication of Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry occurs just two months later (from the fifth month mentioned in verse 1 to the seventh month). Hananiah’s sudden death confirmed who spoke the true word of the Lord, proving that God’s word cannot be mocked.
-
Chapter 29
Jeremiah 29:1
Verse: Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives and to the priests and to the prophets and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah changes his medium of communication to a pastoral letter sent from Jerusalem to the exiled community already living in Babylon. He addresses all tiers of leadership (elders, priests, prophets) and common citizens, aiming to guide their spiritual and social outlook during exile.
-
Jeremiah 29:2
Verse: (After that Jeconiah the king and the queen and the eunuchs the princes of Judah and Jerusalem and the carpenters and the smiths were departed from Jerusalem)
-
English Explanation: This parenthetical verse provides historical context for the letter. It was sent after the second wave of deportation, which stripped Judah of its royal family, political leaders, and vital skilled craftsmen (carpenters and smiths), leaving the homeland severely weakened.
-
Jeremiah 29:3
Verse: By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying
-
English Explanation: The letter is carried by trusted royal emissaries, Elasah and Gemariah, sent by King Zedekiah on an official diplomatic mission to Nebuchadnezzar. Jeremiah wisely uses this state channel to deliver his divinely inspired pastoral instructions directly to the captives.
-
Jeremiah 29:4
Verse: Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel unto all that are carried away captives whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon
-
English Explanation: God establishes a foundational truth for the exiles: Nebuchadnezzar was merely an instrument. God declares, “I have caused [you] to be carried away.” Accepting that their captivity was a sovereign act of God’s discipline, rather than a cosmic mistake, was essential for their spiritual healing.
-
Jeremiah 29:5
Verse: Build ye houses and dwell in them and plant gardens and eat the fruit of them
-
English Explanation: Instead of telling the exiles to pack their bags or plot revolutions, God instructs them to settle down, construct permanent homes, and develop agriculture. This confirms that the exile will be lengthy and requires long-term investment in their temporary surroundings.
-
Jeremiah 29:6
Verse: Take ye wives and beget sons and daughters and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands that they may bear sons and daughters that ye may be increased there and not diminished
-
English Explanation: God commands the community to continue normal family life, marriages, and childbearing over generations. The strategic goal of this command is survival: they must grow numerically (“be increased”) in Babylon so that a strong remnant remains to return home when the time comes.
-
