Verse-by-Verse Commentary (English & Urdu)
Jeremiah 44:13
-
Verse: For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt as I have punished Jerusalem by the sword by the famine and by the pestilence
-
English Explanation: God issues a stern warning to the Jewish refugees who fled to Egypt against His explicit commands. They believed Egypt would offer safety from Babylon, but God clarifies that physical geography cannot hide them from divine judgment. The same three agents of destruction that decimated Jerusalem—war (the sword), starvation (famine), and disease (pestilence)—will track them down in their new sanctuary.
-
Jeremiah 44:14
-
Verse: So that none of the remnant of Judah which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there shall escape or remain that they should return into the land of Judah to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there for none shall return but such as shall escape
-
English Explanation: The illusion of a temporary stay (“sojourn”) in Egypt is shattered. The people secretly desired to return to Judah once conditions improved, but God declares that their disobedience has sealed their fate. Absolute destruction awaits them, with only a minuscule, exceptional handful of escapees managing to ever see their homeland again.
-
Jeremiah 44:15
-
Verse: Then all the men which knew that their wives had burned incense unto other gods and all the women that stood by a great multitude even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt in Pathros answered Jeremiah saying
-
English Explanation: This verse sets a dramatic scene of open rebellion. A massive assembly of Jewish settlers from both Lower and Upper Egypt (Pathros) confronts Jeremiah. Noticeably, the men are fully aware of and complicit in their wives’ idolatrous practices, showing a collective household rebellion against God.
-
Jeremiah 44:16
-
Verse: As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD we will not hearken unto thee
-
English Explanation: The people hit a point of absolute, shameless defiance. They do not deny that Jeremiah speaks on behalf of the LORD, but they deliberately choose to reject God’s authority. This is a direct refusal of divine law in favor of their own desires.
-
Jeremiah 44:17
-
Verse: But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth to burn incense unto the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings unto her as we have done we and our fathers our kings and our princes in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem for then had we plenty of victuals and were well and saw no evil
-
English Explanation: The rebels credit their past prosperity not to God, but to the pagan goddess, the “Queen of Heaven” (likely Ishtar or Astarte). They argue that back when their kings and ancestors openly worshipped idols in Judah, they had food, security, and peace. They commit the dangerous logical fallacy of confusing God’s long-suffering patience with approval of their sins.
-
Jeremiah 44:18
-
Verse: But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings unto her we have wanted all things and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine
-
English Explanation: The people completely misinterpret history. They blame their recent national tragedies (the Babylonian siege and destruction) on the temporary spiritual reforms led by godly kings like Josiah, which restricted idolatry. Instead of seeing Babylon as God’s instrument of judgment for their sins, they view it as the anger of the “Queen of Heaven” for being neglected.
-
Jeremiah 44:19
-
Verse: And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings unto her did we make her cakes to worship her and pour out drink offerings unto her without our men
-
English Explanation: The women speak up to defend their actions, emphasizing that their pagan worship was not done in secret or without patriarchal approval. According to ancient Jewish law, a husband could void a woman’s vow; by stating that their men were fully involved, they argue that their actions were legitimate, binding, and socially approved.
-
Jeremiah 44:20
-
Verse: Then Jeremiah said unto all the people to the men and to the women and to all the people which had given him that answer saying
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah steps forward to counter their delusion. This marks the transition from the people’s defiant justification back to the prophetic truth. He addresses the entire assembly directly, leaving no room for excuses from either men or women.
-
Jeremiah 44:21
-
Verse: The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem ye and your fathers your kings and your princes and the people of the land did not the LORD remember them and came it not into his mind
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah corrects their historical revisionism. He explains that God did not overlook or validate their past idolatry during times of prosperity. Instead, God remembered every single act of pagan worship committed by their ancestors and leaders. Their past comfort was due to God’s mercy, not the favor of false deities.
-
Jeremiah 44:22
-
Verse: So that the LORD could no longer bear because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which ye have committed therefore is your land a desolation and an astonishment and a curse without an inhabitant as at this day
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah reveals the true cause of Judah’s destruction. The devastation of Jerusalem was not because they stopped worshipping the Queen of Heaven, but because God’s patience finally ran out due to their prolonged spiritual adultery and wickedness. Their desolate homeland stands as a physical proof of God’s wrath.
-
Jeremiah 44:23
-
Verse: Because ye have burned incense and because ye have sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD nor walked in his law nor in his statutes nor in his testimonies therefore this evil is happened unto you as at this day
-
English Explanation: This verse serves as a summary of the indictment against the people. Jeremiah explicitly connects their current misery directly to their specific sins: illegal worship, active sinning, disobeying God’s voice, and violating His laws and statutes. Their misery is a direct harvest of what they sowed.
-
Jeremiah 44:24
-
Verse: Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people and to all the women Hear the word of the LORD all Judah that are in the land of Egypt
-
English Explanation: Jeremiah singles out the women again along with the rest of the crowd. Since the women were the instigators of this particular idolatry, they are called to listen closely to a formal, judicial announcement from God.
-
Jeremiah 44:25
-
Verse: Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel saying Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hand saying We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings unto her ye will surely accomplish your vows and surely perform your vows
-
English Explanation: God speaks with heavy irony. He acknowledges their absolute commitment to sin. They were incredibly disciplined and reliable when it came to keeping vows made to false gods, while constantly breaking their vows to the true God. God mockingly tells them to go ahead and fulfill those wicked promises, as they have already sealed their own judgment.
-
Jeremiah 44:26
-
Verse: Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt Behold I have sworn by my great name saith the LORD that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt saying The Lord GOD liveth
-
English Explanation: God pronounces a terrifying spiritual punishment. Since they rejected Him, God swears by His own Name that He will strip them of the privilege of using His Name. They will no longer be allowed to hypocritically swear oaths using “The Lord GOD liveth,” because God is cutting off His covenant relationship with this rebellious remnant in Egypt.
-
Jeremiah 44:27
-
Verse: Behold I will watch over them for evil and not for good and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine until there be an end of them
-
English Explanation: Instead of God’s providential care watching over them for protection, His sovereign gaze will now actively ensure their demise. He will target them with judgment until the rebellious community in Egypt is completely wiped out by warfare and starvation.
-
Jeremiah 44:28
-
Verse: Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah and all the remnant of Judah that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there shall know whose words shall stand mine or theirs
-
English Explanation: God promises that a tiny fraction of survivors will escape and crawl back to Judah. This event will serve as the ultimate reality check. The survival of this tiny group and the destruction of the rest will prove definitively whose words have true power and authority—God’s decrees of judgment, or the people’s arrogant assertions of safety through idolatry.
-
Jeremiah 44:29
-
Verse: And this shall be a sign unto you saith the LORD that I will punish you in this place that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil
-
English Explanation: God offers an undeniable historical marker (a sign) to prove that His threats of judgment are not empty words. This sign will unfold within their lifetime in Egypt, confirming that God’s word guarantees their downfall.
-
Jeremiah 44:30
-
Verse: Thus saith the LORD Behold I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of them that seek his life as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon his enemy and that sought his life
-
English Explanation: The concrete sign is specified: the downfall of their protector, Pharaoh-hophra (Apries). The refugees trusted in Egypt’s geopolitical strength for protection. God declares He will hand Pharaoh over to his enemies just as He handed King Zedekiah of Judah over to Nebuchadnezzar. History records that Pharaoh-hophra was overthrown and strangled by his own rebel subjects and foreign enemies, completely exposing the false security the Jews relied upon.
-
