Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation (English & Urdu)
John 9:19
Verse: And they asked them saying Is this your son who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
-
English Explanation: The Pharisees are cross-examining the parents of the healed man. Driven by skepticism and a desire to discredit Jesus, they demand verification of the miracle. They ask two critical questions: Is this truly your son? And if he was born blind, how can he suddenly see? This highlights the religious leaders’ spiritual blindness; they are confronted with a undeniable miracle but choose to search for a loophole or deception rather than celebrating the man’s healing.
-
John 9:20
Verse: His parents answered them and said We know that this is our son and that he was born blind
-
English Explanation: The parents confirm the physical facts to avoid direct conflict. They unequivocally verify two things: he is indeed their biological son, and he was absolutely born blind. By stating this, they eliminate any theory of mistaken identity, confirming that a genuine supernatural event has occurred.
-
John 9:21
Verse: But by what means he now seeth we know not; or who hath opened his eyes we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
-
English Explanation: Terrified of the religious authorities, the parents dodge the question of how and by whom he was healed. They claim ignorance regarding the mechanics of the miracle and the identity of Jesus. They pass the responsibility entirely onto their son, noting that he is a legal adult (“of age”) and capable of testifying for himself.
-
John 9:22
Verse: These words spake his parents because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already that if any man did confess that he was Christ he should be put out of the synagogue.
-
English Explanation: John provides crucial cultural context here: the parents’ deflection was fueled by fear. The Sanhedrin had decreed that anyone acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah would face excommunication (“put out of the synagogue”). In Jewish society, this meant social isolation, economic ruin, and being cut off from religious life. Fear of man paralyzed their willingness to testify to the truth.
-
John 9:23
Verse: Therefore said his parents He is of age; ask him.
-
English Explanation: This verse reiterates the parents’ self-protective stance. Because the social and religious stakes were incredibly high, they repeated their insistence that the examiners question the son directly, leaving him to face the hostile authorities alone.
-
John 9:24
Verse: Then again called they the man that was blind and said unto him Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
-
English Explanation: The Pharisees recall the healed man and use a manipulative religious phrase: “Give God the praise” (which functionally means, “Swear an oath before God to tell the truth”). They try to bully him into agreeing with their predetermined verdict: that Jesus is a lawbreaker and a sinner because He healed on the Sabbath. They attempt to separate God’s glory from Jesus’ action.
-
John 9:25
Verse: He answered and said Whether he be a sinner or no I know not: one thing I know that whereas I was blind now I see.
-
English Explanation: The healed man offers one of the most powerful testimonies in Scripture. Refusing to entangle himself in theological debates about Jesus’ status, he anchors his response in undeniable personal experience. He cannot speak to their theological labels, but he knows reality: he was once entirely blind, and now he possesses perfect sight. Personal transformation is an unassailable argument against legalistic skepticism.
-
John 9:26
Verse: Then said they to him again What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
-
English Explanation: Frustrated that their intimidation tactics failed, the Pharisees circle back to the mechanics of the miracle. They repeat their questions hoping to find some inconsistency in his story, or looking for a way to classify Jesus’ actions as manual labor forbidden on the Sabbath.
-
John 9:27
Verse: He answered them I have told you already and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
-
English Explanation: The man exhibits incredible boldness and biting sarcasm. He points out their willful deafness—he already detailed the event, but they refused to truly “hear” (accept) it. He mockingly asks if their obsessive interest in the details means they are secretly considering becoming Jesus’ disciples, exposing their stubborn bias.
-
John 9:28
Verse: Then they reviled him and said Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.
-
English Explanation: Insulted by his sarcasm, the religious leaders resort to personal attacks (“reviled him”). They draw a sharp, adversarial line between being a disciple of Jesus and being a disciple of Moses. They pride themselves on their historical alignment with Moses, using it as a shield to reject the living Messiah standing right in front of them.
-
John 9:29
Verse: We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow we know not from whence he is.
-
English Explanation: The Pharisees argue that Moses has established divine credentials because God spoke to him. However, they dismiss Jesus contemptuously as “this fellow,” claiming His origins and authority are completely unknown and suspicious. Ironically, Jesus’ origins were clearly prophesied in the very scriptures of Moses they claimed to follow.
-
John 9:30
Verse: The man answered and said unto them Why herein is a marvellous thing that ye know not from whence he is and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
-
English Explanation: The healed beggar turns the tables and becomes the teacher. He exposes the glaring contradiction in their logic. He points out how astonishing (“marvellous”) it is that the nation’s spiritual experts cannot discern the source of power of a man who just performed an unprecedented miracle of opening a blind man’s eyes.
-
John 9:31
Verse: Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God and doeth his will him he heareth.
-
English Explanation: The man lays out a basic principle of Jewish theology that the Pharisees themselves taught: God does not answer the prayers of deceitful, unrepentant sinners to perform cosmic miracles. God listens to those who reverence Him and align with His divine will. Therefore, Jesus’ ability to heal proves He is in perfect alignment with God.
-
John 9:32
Verse: Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
-
English Explanation: The man highlights the historic magnitude of the miracle. Old Testament prophets performed many miracles, but healing a person born blind was unprecedented in human history. In Jewish tradition, this specific miracle was strictly reserved as a sign of the arriving Messiah.
-
John 9:33
Verse: If this man were not of God he could do nothing.
-
English Explanation: The man delivers his final, logically bulletproof conclusion: If Jesus were not sent from God, He would possess absolutely no supernatural power to perform such a creation-level miracle. The fruit of Jesus’ ministry verified His divine origin.
-
John 9:34
Verse: They answered and said unto him Thou wast altogether born in sins and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
-
English Explanation: Unable to defeat his flawless logic, the Pharisees default to spiritual bullying and elitism. They insult his identity, claiming his congenital blindness was proof he was “born in sins.” Offended that an uneducated beggar would dare instruct religious doctors, they formally excommunicate him (“cast him out”).
-
John 9:35
Verse: Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him he said unto him Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
-
Explanation: When the world rejects a person for speaking the truth, Jesus seeks them out. Hearing of the man’s excommunication, Jesus intentionally finds him. He shifts the conversation from physical healing to eternal salvation, asking the ultimate destiny question: “Dost thou believe on the Son of God?”
-
John 9:36
Verse: He answered and said Who is he Lord that I might believe on him?
-
English Explanation: The man responds with a ready and willing heart. He addresses Jesus respectfully as “Lord” (sir), eager to put his trust in the Messiah. He had defended Jesus without even knowing His full divine identity; he is now ready to receive the full revelation.
-
John 9:37
Verse: And Jesus said unto him Thou hast both seen him and it is he that talketh with thee.
-
English Explanation: Jesus reveals His identity with beautiful clarity. He reminds the man of the miracle: you have “seen” Him—an incredible statement to a man who had never seen anything before. Jesus confirms that He, the one speaking to him right now, is indeed the Messiah/Son of God.
-
John 9:38
Verse: And he said Lord I believe. And he worshipped him.
-
English Explanation: The spiritual eyes of the man are now fully opened, matching his physical sight. He confesses his faith immediately: “Lord, I believe.” He then falls down and worships Jesus. Jesus willingly accepts this worship, which is a direct claim to His divinity, as only God can be worshipped.
-
John 9:39
Verse: And Jesus said For judgment I am come into this world that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
-
English Explanation: Jesus states His mission’s paradoxical outcome. He came so that those who recognize their spiritual poverty and blindness (“they which see not”) might receive spiritual sight. Conversely, those who arrogantly claim to possess all spiritual knowledge and righteousness (“they which see”) will be left in their self-righteous spiritual blindness.
-
John 9:40
Verse: And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words and said unto him Are we blind also?
-
English Explanation: Some Pharisees nearby overhear Jesus’ words and take offense. Sensing the sting of His statement, they ask incredulously, “Are we blind also?” Their question is filled with defensive pride, unable to fathom that they—the theological elite—could be considered spiritually blind.
-
John 9:41
Verse: Jesus said unto them If ye were blind ye should have no sin: but now ye say We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
-
English Explanation: Jesus delivers a devastating conclusion. If they were honestly ignorant (“blind”), they would not be guilty of rejecting the light. But because they arrogantly insist that they possess full spiritual insight (“We see”) and yet reject the Messiah, they have no excuse. Their sin and guilt remain firmly intact because they deliberately closed their eyes to the truth.
-
John 10:1
Verse: Verily verily I say unto you He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold but climbeth up some other way the same is a thief and a robber.
-
English Explanation: Transitioning directly from the conflict with the Pharisees, Jesus uses a familiar pastoral metaphor. A legitimate shepherd enters the sheep pen through the designated gate. Anyone who scales the walls or sneaks in by alternative methods proves they are an illegitimate intruder—a thief intent on stealing and destroying the flock. Jesus is targetting the Pharisees as false leaders.
-
John 10:2
Verse: But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
-
English Explanation: In contrast to the thief, the true shepherd has legal right and access. He uses the formal entrance, proving his authority, openness, and caring intent toward the flock. Jesus enters in full accordance with God’s prophetic law.
-
John 10:3
Verse: To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out.
-
English Explanation: The gatekeeper (“porter”) recognizes the shepherd and opens the door for him. The shepherd has an intimate relationship with his flock; the sheep recognize his unique voice, and he calls each of them by their individual names. He does not drive them like cattle but leads them out gently.
-
John 10:4
Verse: And when he putteth forth his own sheep he goeth before them and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
-
English Explanation: When the shepherd leads his flock into pasture, he positions himself at the front, walking before them to clear the path, face dangers first, and guide the way. The sheep follow him unconditionally because they have learned to trust his specific voice over all others.
-
John 10:5
Verse: And a stranger will they not follow but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
-
English Explanation: True believers (the sheep) possess spiritual discernment. They will not follow false teachers or spiritual impostors (“strangers”). Instead, they will actively run away from them because the unfamiliar, deceptive voice of a stranger sounds wrong and unsafe to them.
-
John 10:6
Verse: This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
-
English Explanation: Jesus delivered this profound spiritual illustration to the religious elite, but their hearts were hardened. Because of their spiritual blindness, they completely failed to comprehend the spiritual reality behind the analogy—they did not see that they were the thieves and Jesus was the true Shepherd.
-
John 10:7
Verse: Then said Jesus unto them again Verily verily I say unto you I am the door of the sheep.
-
English Explanation: Because they missed the point, Jesus explains it explicitly using an emphatic “Verily, verily” (Truly, truly). He shifts the metaphor slightly and declares: “I am the door of the sheep.” He is the exclusive entry point through which sheep must pass to find security and belonging in God’s family.
-
John 10:8
Verse: All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
-
English Explanation: Jesus refers to the false messiahs, corrupt religious leaders, and self-appointed teachers who came before Him seeking power and personal gain rather than the welfare of the people. God’s true remnant (the sheep) saw through their hypocrisy and refused to follow them.
-
John 10:9
Verse: I am the door: by me if any man enter in he shall be saved and shall go in and out and find pasture.
-
English Explanation: Jesus restates His exclusive role as the Door. Salvation comes only through Him. Those who enter through Jesus experience ultimate security (“shall be saved”), liberty and freedom of fellowship (“go in and out”), and complete spiritual nourishment (“find pasture”).
-
John 10:10
Verse: The thief cometh not but for to steal and to kill and to destroy: I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.
-
English Explanation: This verse draws a stark contrast of motivations. The enemy (Satan and false teachers) comes solely to exploit, harm, and ruin (“steal, kill, destroy”). Conversely, Jesus’ entire purpose is to give life—not just basic existence, but a rich, overflowing, eternal, and meaningful life (“more abundantly”).
-
John 10:11
Verse: I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
-
English Explanation: Jesus uses one of His most famous titles: “I am the good shepherd.” The defining characteristic of this “Good” Shepherd is His sacrificial love. Unlike a ruler who demands the lives of his subjects, this Shepherd willingly lays down His own life to save and protect His flock from eternal death.
-
John 10:12
Verse: But he that is an hireling and not the shepherd whose own the sheep are not seeth the wolf coming and leaveth the sheep and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them and scattereth the sheep.
-
English Explanation: Jesus contrasts the true shepherd with a “hireling” (a paid laborer). The hireling works only for money and feels no ownership or love for the sheep. When danger appears in the form of a wolf, the hireling runs away to save his own skin, leaving the vulnerable flock to be attacked, killed, and scattered. This exposes the heartless cowardice of the Pharisees.
-
