Verse-by-Verse Commentary: John 16:5 to John 17:3

John 16:5

Verse: But now I go my way to him that sent me and none of you asketh me Whither goest thou?

  • English Explanation: Jesus points out that the disciples are absorbed in their own grief about His departure. Instead of asking about the glorious purpose of His return to the Father who sent Him, they are focused entirely on the pain of losing Him.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ علیہ السلام اشارہ کرتے ہیں کہ شاگرد ان کی روانگی کے غم میں ڈوبے ہوئے ہیں۔ یہ پوچھنے کے بجائے کہ وہ اپنے بھیجنے والے باپ کے پاس کس عظیم مقصد کے لیے جا رہے ہیں، ان کی تمام تر توجہ اپنے ذاتی نقصان اور دکھ پر مرکوز ہے۔

John 16:6

Verse: But because I have said these things unto you sorrow hath filled your heart

  • English Explanation: The revelation that Jesus is leaving has overwhelmed the disciples. Fear and sorrow have crowded out their faith and understanding of the bigger divine plan.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ کے یہ بتانے پر کہ وہ جا رہے ہیں، شاگردوں کے دل شدید غم اور خوف سے بھر گئے۔ اس دکھ نے ان کے دلوں میں خدا کے عظیم منصوبے اور ایمان کے لیے جگہ نہیں چھوڑی۔

John 16:7

Verse: Nevertheless I tell you the truth It is expedient for you that I go away for if I go not away the Comforter will not come unto you but if I depart I will send him unto you

  • English Explanation: Jesus shares a profound spiritual truth: His departure is actually for their benefit. The physical limitation of His earthly presence must give way to the spiritual, omnipresent helper—the Holy Spirit (the Comforter)—who can dwell inside every believer.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ ایک گہرا روحانی سچ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ ان کا جانا شاگردوں کے حق میں بہتر ہے۔ ان کی جسمانی موجودگی کی جگہ اب روحِ حق (تسلی دینے والے) کو لینی ہے جو ہر مومن کے اندر سکونت اختیار کر سکے، اور یہ تب ہی ممکن ہے جب عیسیٰ واپس جائیں۔

John 16:8

Verse: And when he is come he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment

  • English Explanation: Once the Holy Spirit arrives, His mission toward the unbelieving world will be threefold: to convict people of their personal sin, to demonstrate what true divine righteousness looks like, and to reveal the reality of God’s final judgment.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب پاک روح آئے گا، تو وہ دنیا پر تین چیزیں واضح اور ثابت کرے گا: گناہ، سچائی (راستبازی)، اور عدالت۔ وہ دنیا کو اس کے گناہوں کا احساس دلائے گا۔

John 16:9

Verse: Of sin because they believe not on me

  • English Explanation: The ultimate, defining sin that the Holy Spirit exposes is the world’s refusal to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Unbelief is the root of all spiritual separation from God.

  • Urdu Explanation: سب سے بڑا گناہ جس کا روحِ پاک احساس دلائے گا، وہ عیسیٰ پر ایمان نہ لانا ہے۔ مسیح کا انکار ہی انسان کو خدا سے دور رکھتا ہے۔

John 16:10

Verse: Of righteousness because I go to my Father and ye see me no more

  • English Explanation: The world judged Jesus as a criminal, but His ascension to the Father proves His absolute, divine righteousness. The Spirit convicts the world of its false standards of righteousness.

  • Urdu Explanation: راستبازی (سچائی) کے بارے میں اس لیے کیونکہ عیسیٰ اپنے باپ کے پاس جا رہے ہیں۔ دنیا نے انہیں مجرم سمجھا، لیکن ان کا آسمان پر اٹھایا جانا ثابت کرتا ہے کہ وہی حقیقی راستباز ہیں۔

John 16:11

Verse: Of judgment because the prince of this world is judged

  • English Explanation: The Spirit shows that satan (the prince of this world) has already been defeated and condemned through Christ’s work on the cross. Therefore, the world stands warned of the certainty of final judgment.

  • Urdu Explanation: عدالت کے بارے میں اس لیے کیونکہ اس دنیا کا سردار (شیطان) مجرم ٹھہرایا جا چکا ہے۔ عیسیٰ کی صلیبی موت اور جی اٹھنے نے شیطان کو شکست دے دی ہے، جس سے ثابت ہوتا ہے کہ آخری عدالت یقینی ہے۔

John 16:12

Verse: I have yet many things to say unto you but ye cannot bear them now

  • English Explanation: Jesus recognizes the human limitations of His disciples. Their minds are currently too heavy with grief and lack the spiritual capacity to understand deeper theological truths until the Holy Spirit arrives.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ جانتے ہیں کہ شاگرد ابھی ذہنی اور روحانی طور پر اتنے مضبوط نہیں ہیں کہ مزید گہری سچائیوں کو برداشت کر سکیں۔ اس لیے وہ مزید باتیں روحِ پاک کے آنے تک روک دیتے ہیں۔

John 16:13

Verse: Howbeit when he the Spirit of truth is come he will guide you into all truth for he shall not speak of himself but whatsoever he shall hear that shall he speak and he will shew you things to come

  • English Explanation: The Holy Spirit is designated as the “Spirit of truth.” He acts as a divine guide, leading believers into complete spiritual truth. He does not operate independently but speaks only what comes from the Godhead, including revealing future prophetic events.

  • Urdu Explanation: روحِ پاک کو “سچائی کا روح” کہا گیا ہے۔ وہ مومنین کی رہنمائی کرے گا اور اپنی طرف سے کچھ نہیں کہے گا، بلکہ وہی کہے گا جو باپ کی طرف سے سنے گا، اور مستقبل کی باتوں سے بھی آگاہ کرے گا۔

John 16:14

Verse: He shall glorify me for he shall receive of mine and shall shew it unto you

  • English Explanation: The primary focus of the Holy Spirit’s ministry is to glorify Jesus Christ. He takes the teachings, character, and truth of Jesus and makes them clear and real to the believers.

  • Urdu Explanation: پاک روح کا بنیادی مقصد عیسیٰ مسیح کا جلال ظاہر کرنا ہے۔ وہ عیسیٰ کی تعلیمات اور ان کی حقیقت کو لے کر شاگردوں پر ظاہر کرے گا تاکہ ان کا ایمان پختہ ہو۔

John 16:15

Verse: All things that the Father hath are mine therefore said I that he shall take of mine and shall shew it unto you

  • English Explanation: This verse claims complete divine unity and equality between the Father and the Son. Everything belonging to the Father belongs to Jesus; thus, what the Spirit reveals from Jesus is inherently from the Father.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہاں عیسیٰ اور خدا باپ کی کامل یکسانیت کا ذکر ہے۔ جو کچھ باپ کا ہے وہ عیسیٰ کا ہے، اسی لیے پاک روح جو کچھ عیسیٰ کی تعلیمات سے لے کر سکھائے گا، وہ دراصل خدا باپ ہی کی طرف سے ہوگا۔

John 16:16

Verse: A little while and ye shall not see me and again a little while and ye shall see me because I go to the Father

  • English Explanation: Jesus refers to His imminent death (when He will vanish from their sight) and His subsequent resurrection and spiritual presence through the Holy Spirit (when they will experience Him again).

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ اپنی قریبی موت (جب وہ نظر نہیں آئیں گے) اور پھر اپنے جی اٹھنے اور روح کے ذریعے موجودگی (جب وہ دوبارہ نظر آئیں گے) کی طرف اشارہ کر رہے ہیں۔

John 16:17

Verse: Then said some of his disciples among themselves What is this that he saith unto us A little while and ye shall not see me and again a little while and ye shall see me and Because I go to the Father?

  • English Explanation: The disciples are deeply confused by Jesus’ paradoxical riddle about “a little while.” They cannot comprehend how His departure to the Father connects to seeing Him again.

  • Urdu Explanation: شاگرد عیسیٰ کی اس پہیلی نما بات سے سخت الجھن کا شکار ہو گئے کہ “تھوڑی دیر” سے کیا مراد ہے اور باپ کے پاس جانے کا دوبارہ دیکھنے سے کیا تعلق ہے۔

John 16:18

Verse: They said therefore What is this that he saith A little while? we cannot tell what he saith

  • English Explanation: Unable to decode the meaning on their own, the disciples express their collective frustration and lack of understanding regarding the timeline Jesus is sharing.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ آپس میں کہتے ہیں کہ اس “تھوڑی دیر” کا کیا مطلب ہے؟ ہم سمجھنے سے قاصر ہیں کہ وہ کیا کہنا چاہ رہے ہیں۔

John 16:19

Verse: Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him and said unto them Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said A little while and ye shall not see me and again a little while and ye shall see me?

  • English Explanation: Demonstrating His divine insight, Jesus perceives their inner confusion and desire to ask for clarification, addressing their private questioning directly.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ اپنی الٰہی بصیرت سے جان لیتے ہیں کہ شاگرد ان سے پوچھنے سے کتراتے ہوئے آپس میں بحث کر رہے ہیں، چنانچہ وہ خود ہی ان کی الجھن کا ذکر کرتے ہیں۔

John 16:20

Verse: Verily verily I say unto you That ye shall weep and lament but the world shall rejoice and ye shall be sorrowful but your sorrow shall be turned into joy

  • English Explanation: Jesus predicts that His death will cause the disciples severe grief while the corrupt world celebrations. However, this sorrow is temporary; the resurrection will transform their deep grief into everlasting joy.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ ان کی موت پر شاگرد روئیں گے اور ماتم کریں گے جبکہ دنیا خوشیاں منائے گی۔ لیکن یہ دکھ عارضی ہے، کیونکہ ان کا یہی غم جی اٹھنے کے بعد لامتناہی خوشی میں بدل جائے گا۔

John 16:21

Verse: A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow because her hour is come but as soon as she is delivered of the child she remembereth no more the anguish for joy that a man is born into the world

  • English Explanation: Jesus uses the powerful metaphor of childbirth. The pain of labor is severe but necessary, and it is instantly forgotten the moment new life enters the world. Likewise, the pain of the cross yields the joy of salvation.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ زچگی کے درد کی مثال دیتے ہیں کہ بچہ پیدا ہوتے ہی ماں اپنا سارا درد بھول جاتی ہے کیونکہ دنیا میں ایک نیا انسان آ گیا ہے۔ اسی طرح، صلیب کا یہ درد نجات اور نئی زندگی کی خوشی پیدا کرے گا۔

John 16:22

Verse: And ye now therefore have sorrow but I will see you again and your heart shall rejoice and your joy no man taketh from you

  • English Explanation: He acknowledges their current emotional state but guarantees a future reunion. The joy initiated by His resurrection is permanent and secure; no earthly power can rob them of it.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ ان کے موجودہ دکھ کو تسلیم کرتے ہیں لیکن وعدہ کرتے ہیں کہ جب وہ دوبارہ ملیں گے تو ان کے دل ایسی خوشی سے بھر جائیں گے جسے دنیا کی کوئی طاقت ان سے چھین نہیں سکے گی۔

John 16:23

Verse: And in that day ye shall ask me nothing Verily verily I say unto you Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name he will give it you

  • English Explanation: After the resurrection and the coming of the Spirit, the disciples will no longer ask confused questions. Instead, they will have direct spiritual access to pray to the Father in the authority and identity of Jesus’ name.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس دن شاگردوں کو الجھن بھرے سوالات پوچھنے کی ضرورت نہیں رہے گی۔ عیسیٰ کے نام اور ان کے وسیلے سے، وہ جو کچھ بھی خدا باپ سے مانگیں گے، باپ انہیں عطا فرمائے گا۔

John 16:24

Verse: Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name ask and ye shall receive that your joy may be full

  • English Explanation: Up to this point, praying in the name of Jesus was not practiced. Jesus invites them to begin practicing this new covenant prayer life so they can experience the complete, overflowing joy of answered prayers.

  • Urdu Explanation: اب تک شاگردوں نے عیسیٰ کے نام سے کچھ نہیں مانگا تھا۔ عیسیٰ انہیں ترغیب دیتے ہیں کہ وہ اب ان کے نام سے مانگیں تاکہ ان کی دعائیں قبول ہوں اور ان کی خوشی کامل ہو جائے۔

John 16:25

Verse: These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs but the time cometh when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs but I shall shew you plainly of the Father

  • English Explanation: Jesus notes that much of His teaching has used figurative language or parables. Soon, through the Holy Spirit, the veil will be removed, and they will receive clear, direct knowledge about God the Father.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ اب تک انہوں نے تمثیلوں اور اشاروں میں بات کی ہے۔ لیکن جلد ہی ایسا وقت آئے گا جب وہ روحِ پاک کے ذریعے خدا باپ کے بارے میں صاف اور سیدھی باتیں سکھائیں گے۔

John 16:26

Verse: At that day ye shall ask in my name and I say not unto you that I will pray the Father for you

  • English Explanation: In that coming era, the believers will pray using Jesus’ authority. Jesus clarifies that He won’t need to beg an unwilling Father on their behalf because the channel of communication is fully open.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس وقت شاگرد عیسیٰ کے نام سے دعا کریں گے۔ عیسیٰ واضح کرتے ہیں کہ انہیں کسی ناراض باپ کو منانے کی ضرورت نہیں ہوگی، کیونکہ مومنین کا رابطہ باپ سے براہِ راست قائم ہو چکا ہوگا۔

John 16:27

Verse: For the Father himself loveth you because ye have loved me and have believed that I came out from God

  • English Explanation: The Father loves believers directly because of their genuine love for Jesus and their faith in His divine origin. Love for Christ aligns a person with the heart of God.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا باپ خود مومنین سے محبت کرتا ہے کیونکہ انہوں نے عیسیٰ سے محبت کی اور ایمان لائے کہ عیسیٰ خدا ہی کی طرف سے آئے ہیں۔ مسیح پر ایمان انسان کو خدا کا محبوب بنا دیتا ہے۔

John 16:28

Verse: I came forth from the Father and am come into the world again I leave the world and go to the Father

  • English Explanation: This is a concise summary of Christ’s entire mission: His incarnation (leaving the Father to come to earth) and His ascension (leaving earth to return to the Father).

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ عیسیٰ کے پورے مشن کا نچوڑ ہے: ان کا آسمان سے زمین پر آنا (مجسّم ہونا) اور اب دنیا کو چھوڑ کر واپس اپنے باپ کے پاس چلے جانا (صعودِ آسمانی)۔

John 16:29

Verse: His disciples said unto him Lo now speakest thou plainly and speakest no proverb

  • English Explanation: Hearing this clear declaration of His origin and destination, the disciples feel a sudden surge of clarity, believing that Jesus is finally dropping all cryptic language.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب عیسیٰ نے اتنی صاف بات کی، تو شاگردوں کو محسوس ہوا کہ اب تمام الجھنیں دور ہو گئی ہیں اور وہ بغیر کسی تمثیل کے سیدھی بات سمجھ گئے ہیں۔

John 16:30

Verse: Now are we sure that thou knowest all things and needest not that any man should ask thee by this we believe that thou camest forth from God

  • English Explanation: The disciples voice their confidence in Jesus’ omniscience, recognizing that He knows their thoughts before they even voice them. This confirms their faith that He is sent by God.

  • Urdu Explanation: شاگرد کہتے ہیں کہ اب ہمیں یقین ہو گیا ہے کہ آپ سب کچھ جانتے ہیں اور کسی کے پوچھنے سے پہلے ہی اس کے دل کا حال جان لیتے ہیں۔ اسی وجہ سے ہمارا ایمان ہے کہ آپ خدا کی طرف سے آئے ہیں۔

John 16:31

Verse: Jesus answered them Do ye now believe?

  • English Explanation: Jesus asks a sobering, rhetorical question. He challenges the depth and stability of their sudden, emotional outburst of faith, knowing it will soon be tested.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ ان سے ایک سنجیدہ سوال کرتے ہیں: “کیا تم اب ایمان لاتے ہو؟” وہ ان کے وقتی جوش کو چیلنج کر رہے ہیں کیونکہ وہ جانتے ہیں کہ جلد ہی ان کے ایمان کا امتحان ہونے والا ہے۔

John 16:32

Verse: Behold the hour cometh yea is now come that ye shall be scattered every man to his own and shall leave me alone and yet I am not alone because the Father is with me

  • English Explanation: Jesus predicts their imminent desertion; when arrest comes, they will scatter to save themselves, leaving Him physically isolated. Yet, He emphasizes that He is never truly alone because the Father remains intimately with Him.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ پیشگوئی کرتے ہیں کہ وہ گھڑی آ گئی ہے جب مصیبت پڑنے پر سب شاگرد اپنی اپنی جان بچانے کے لیے تتر بتر ہو جائیں گے اور انہیں تنہا چھوڑ دیں گے۔ لیکن عیسیٰ اکیلے نہیں ہیں کیونکہ خدا باپ ان کے ساتھ ہے۔

John 16:33

Verse: These things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace In the world ye shall have tribulation but be of good cheer I have overcome the world

  • English Explanation: This is the ultimate conclusion of His discourse. Jesus promises inner peace to believers despite earthly trials. He warns that the world guarantees tribulation, but commands courage because His victory over the world is absolute.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ اس پورے خطبے کا حاصل ہے۔ عیسیٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ دنیا میں مصیبتیں آنا یقینی ہیں، لیکن ان میں ایمان رکھنے سے دل کو سکون ملے گا۔ وہ حوصلہ رکھنے کی تلقین کرتے ہیں کیونکہ وہ دنیا کو مغلوب (شکست دے) چکے ہیں۔

John 17:1

Verse: These words spake Jesus and lifted up his eyes to heaven and said Father the hour is come glorify thy Son that thy Son also may glorify thee

  • English Explanation: Transitioning from teaching to His High Priestly Prayer, Jesus looks up to heaven. He announces that the hour of the crucifixion has arrived and requests the Father to glorify Him through it so that the Son may, in turn, bring ultimate glory to the Father.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ اپنی گفتگو ختم کر کے دعا کی طرف متوجہ ہوتے ہیں اور آسمان کی طرف آنکھیں اٹھا کر کہتے ہیں کہ وہ وقت (صلیب کا وقت) آ گیا ہے۔ وہ باپ سے اپنے جلال کی دعا کرتے ہیں تاکہ ان کے ذریعے باپ کا جلال ظاہر ہو۔

John 17:2

Verse: As thou hast given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him

  • English Explanation: Jesus affirms that the Father has granted Him universal authority over all humanity. The core purpose of this divine authority is to distribute the gift of eternal life to everyone chosen by and given to Him by the Father.

  • Urdu Explanation: عیسیٰ فرماتے ہیں کہ باپ نے انہیں تمام انسانوں پر اختیار دیا ہے۔ اس اختیار کا مقصد یہ ہے کہ عیسیٰ ان تمام لوگوں کو ہمیشہ کی زندگی (حیاتِ ابدی) بخشیں جو باپ نے انہیں سونپے ہیں۔

John 17:3

Verse: And this is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent

  • English Explanation: Jesus defines the exact nature of eternal life: it is not just endless duration, but an intimate, experiential knowledge of the one true God and a relational devotion to Jesus Christ, His sent Messenger and Savior.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہاں ہمیشہ کی زندگی کی تعریف بیان کی گئی ہے: ابدی زندگی صرف ہمیشہ زندہ رہنے کا نام نہیں، بلکہ سچے خدا کو پہچاننا اور عیسیٰ مسیح پر سچے دل سے ایمان لانا اور ان سے گہرا تعلق قائم کرنا ہے جنہیں خدا نے بھیجا ہے۔
