Joshua Chapter

Joshua Chapter 9

Joshua 9:15

Verse: And Joshua made peace with them and made a league with them to let them live and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

  • English Explanation: Joshua, acting as the leader, establishes a formal peace treaty (league) with the Gibeonites. This was done without first consulting the Lord, leading to a binding agreement to spare their lives.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:16

Verse: And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them that they heard that they were their neighbours and that they dwelt among them.

  • English Explanation: Truth quickly surfaces. Only three days after the treaty, the Israelites discover that the “faraway travelers” were actually local neighbors living nearby.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:17

Verse: And the children of Israel journeyed and came unto their cities on the third day Now their cities were Gibeon and Chephirah and Beeroth and Kirjath-jearim.

  • English Explanation: Israel marches to verify the truth and finds the four primary cities belonging to the Gibeonite confederacy.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:18

Verse: And the children of Israel smote them not because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

  • English Explanation: Despite the deception, Israel does not attack because a sacred oath was made in God’s name. However, the common people are angry and complain against their leaders for being fooled.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:19

Verse: But all the princes said unto all the congregation We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel now therefore we may not touch them.

  • English Explanation: The leaders emphasize that an oath taken in the name of Yahweh is inviolable. To break it would be a sin against God, regardless of the Gibeonites’ trickery.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:20

Verse: This we will do to them we will even let them live lest wrath be upon us because of the oath which we sware unto them.

  • English Explanation: Keeping the oath was a matter of avoiding divine judgment (wrath). They prioritize God’s honor over their own desire for justice.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:21

Verse: And the princes said unto them Let them live but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation as the princes had promised them.

  • English Explanation: A compromise is reached: the Gibeonites live but lose their independence, becoming servants responsible for the manual labor of the community.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:22

Verse: And Joshua called for them and he spake unto them saying Wherefore have ye beguiled us saying We are very far from you when ye dwell among us?

  • English Explanation: Joshua confronts the Gibeonites directly, demanding an explanation for their elaborate lie.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:23

Verse: Now therefore ye are cursed and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

  • English Explanation: Joshua pronounces a sentence: they are “cursed” with perpetual servitude, specifically serving the Tabernacle (the house of God).

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:24

Verse: And they answered Joshua and said Because it was certainly told thy servants how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you and have done this thing.

  • English Explanation: The Gibeonites admit their motive was fear. They knew of God’s promise to Moses and realized that survival was only possible through a treaty.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:25

Verse: And now behold we are in thine hand as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us do.

  • English Explanation: They surrender completely to Joshua’s mercy, accepting whatever judgment he deems fair.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:26

Verse: And so did he unto them and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel that they slew them not.

  • English Explanation: Joshua upholds the integrity of the oath, protecting the Gibeonites from the Israelites who wanted to kill them.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 9:27

Verse: And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD even unto this day in the place which he should choose.

  • English Explanation: The Gibeonites are officially assigned to serve the Altar of the Lord. Their deception led to a humble status, but also placed them in the service of the true God.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua Chapter 10

Joshua 10:1

Verse: Now it came to pass when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it as he had done to Jericho and her king so he had done to Ai and her king and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them.

  • English Explanation: The king of Jerusalem becomes alarmed. News of Israel’s total victories and Gibeon’s defection (peace treaty) spreads fear among the local Canaanite powers.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:2

Verse: That they feared greatly because Gibeon was a great city as one of the royal cities and because it was greater than Ai and all the men thereof were mighty.

  • English Explanation: Gibeon was a powerful city with elite warriors. Its surrender to Israel was a massive blow to the Canaanite morale and defense strategy.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:3

Verse: Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron and unto Piram king of Jarmuth and unto Japhia king of Lachish and unto Debir king of Eglon saying.

  • English Explanation: Adoni-zedek forms a coalition. He reaches out to four other kings to unite against the perceived threat.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:4

Verse: Come up unto me and help me that we may smite Gibeon for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

  • English Explanation: The coalition’s immediate target is Gibeon—to punish them for their peace with Israel and to prevent others from following suit.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:5

Verse: Therefore the five kings of the Amorites the king of Jerusalem the king of Hebron the king of Jarmuth the king of Lachish the king of Eglon gathered themselves together and went up they and all their hosts and encamped before Gibeon and made war against it.

  • English Explanation: Five Amorite kings combine their armies to besiege Gibeon, creating a major military crisis.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:6

Verse: And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal saying Slack not thy hand from thy servants come up to us quickly and save us and help us for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

  • English Explanation: Under siege, Gibeon calls upon their treaty with Israel, pleading for immediate military intervention from Gilgal.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:7

Verse: So Joshua ascended from Gilgal he and all the people of war with him and all the mighty men of valour.

  • English Explanation: Joshua honors the treaty. He leads his entire army, including his best warriors, on a forced march to defend his new subjects.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:8

Verse: And the LORD said unto Joshua Fear them not for I have delivered them into thine hand there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

  • English Explanation: Before the battle, God provides Joshua with divine assurance of total victory.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:9

Verse: Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly and went up from Gilgal all night.

  • English Explanation: Utilizing the element of surprise, Joshua’s army marches all night to strike the Amorite coalition unexpectedly.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:10

Verse: And the LORD discomfited them before Israel and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon and chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon and smote them to Azekah and unto Makkedah.

  • English Explanation: God throws the enemy into a panic. Israel achieves a massive victory, pursuing the retreating kings across the region.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Joshua 10:11

Verse: And it came to pass as they fled from before Israel and were in the going down to Beth-horon that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah and they died they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

  • English Explanation: A miraculous intervention occurs. As the enemy flees, God sends massive hailstones (stones from heaven) that kill more soldiers than the actual battle did.

  • Urdu Explanation:
