Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Joshua 1:17

Verse: According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things so will we hearken unto thee only the LORD thy God be with thee as he was with Moses

  • English Explanation: The Israelites pledge their total loyalty to Joshua, just as they did to Moses. Their only condition or prayer is that God remains with Joshua, confirming that his authority comes from divine presence.

  • Urdu Explanation: بنی اسرائیل نے یشوع سے مکمل وفاداری کا وعدہ کیا جیسے انہوں نے موسیٰ سے کیا تھا۔ ان کی واحد شرط یا دعا یہ تھی کہ خدا یشوع کے ساتھ رہے، جس سے یہ ثابت ہو کہ اس کی قیادت خدا کی طرف سے ہے۔


Joshua 1:18

Verse: Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him he shall be put to death only be strong and of a good courage

  • English Explanation: To ensure national unity, a strict law is set: anyone rebelling against the new leader faces death. They encourage Joshua to remain brave, knowing the people are behind him.

  • Urdu Explanation: قومی اتحاد کو برقرار رکھنے کے لیے ایک سخت حکم دیا گیا کہ جو کوئی بھی نئے لیڈر کی نافرمانی کرے گا اسے موت کی سزا دی جائے گی۔ انہوں نے یشوع کی حوصلہ افزائی کی کہ وہ مضبوط اور دلیر رہے۔


Joshua 2:1

Verse: And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly saying Go view the land even Jericho And they went and came into an harlot’s house named Rahab and lodged there

  • English Explanation: Joshua begins his military strategy by sending two spies to Jericho. They find refuge in the house of Rahab, a woman who lived on the city wall, providing them a discreet place to gather intel.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے اریحا کی جاسوسی کے لیے دو آدمی بھیجے۔ وہ راہب نامی ایک عورت کے گھر ٹھہرے، جو شہر کی دیوار پر رہتی تھی، تاکہ وہ خاموشی سے معلومات جمع کر سکیں۔


Joshua 2:2

Verse: And it was told the king of Jericho saying Behold there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country

  • English Explanation: The arrival of the Israelite spies does not go unnoticed. Security was high, and the King of Jericho is immediately informed of their presence.

  • Urdu Explanation: اسرائیلی جاسوسوں کی آمد چھپی نہ رہ سکی۔ اریحا کے بادشاہ کو فوراً خبر دی گئی کہ کچھ لوگ ملک کی جاسوسی کرنے آئے ہیں۔


Joshua 2:3

Verse: And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab saying Bring forth the men that are come to thee which are entered into thine house for they be come to search out all the country

  • English Explanation: The King demands Rahab surrender the spies. This puts Rahab in a position where she must choose between her own king and the God of Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation: بادشاہ نے راہب کو حکم دیا کہ ان آدمیوں کو باہر نکالے جو اس کے گھر آئے ہیں۔ یہ راہب کے لیے اپنے بادشاہ اور اسرائیل کے خدا کے درمیان انتخاب کا وقت تھا۔


Joshua 2:4

Verse: And the woman took the two men and hid them and said thus There came men unto me but I wist not whence they were

  • English Explanation: Rahab chooses to protect the spies. She hides them and misleads the king’s messengers, claiming she didn’t know where the men were from.

  • Urdu Explanation: راہب نے جاسوسوں کو چھپا دیا اور بادشاہ کے کارندوں سے جھوٹ بولا کہ اسے نہیں معلوم کہ وہ لوگ کہاں سے آئے تھے۔


Joshua 2:5

Verse: And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate when it was dark that the men went out whither the men went I wot not pursue after them quickly for ye shall overtake them

  • English Explanation: To create urgency and ensure the guards leave her house, Rahab suggests the spies left just as the city gates were closing, sending the search party on a wild goose chase.

  • Urdu Explanation: راہب نے کہا کہ وہ لوگ اندھیرا ہوتے ہی نکل گئے جب شہر کا دروازہ بند ہو رہا تھا۔ اس نے پہرے داروں کو مشورہ دیا کہ وہ ان کا پیچھا کریں تاکہ وہ انہیں پکڑ سکیں۔


Joshua 2:6

Verse: But she had brought them up to the roof of the house and hid them with the stalks of flax which she had laid in order upon the roof

  • English Explanation: The reality was that the spies were safely hidden under flax stalks on her roof. This shows Rahab’s calculated risk and preparation to save them.

  • Urdu Explanation: حقیقت میں جاسوس اس کی چھت پر سن (flax) کے ڈھیر کے نیچے چھپے ہوئے تھے۔ یہ راہب کی بہادری اور منصوبہ بندی کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔


Joshua 2:7

Verse: And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out they shut the gate

  • English Explanation: The king’s men head toward the Jordan River. Once they leave, the city is locked down, trapping the spies inside but also keeping the pursuers out.

  • Urdu Explanation: بادشاہ کے آدمی دریائے یردن کی طرف چلے گئے۔ ان کے جاتے ہی شہر کا دروازہ بند کر دیا گیا، جس سے جاسوس اندر تو محصور ہو گئے لیکن دشمنوں سے محفوظ رہے۔


Joshua 2:8

Verse: And before they were laid down she came up unto them upon the roof

  • English Explanation: Before the spies could sleep, Rahab goes to the roof to speak with them, seeking to make a deal for her family’s safety.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس سے پہلے کہ جاسوس سوتے، راہب چھت پر ان کے پاس گئی تاکہ اپنے خاندان کی حفاظت کے لیے ان سے بات کر سکے۔


Joshua 2:9

Verse: And she said unto the men I know that the LORD hath given you the land and that your terror is fallen upon us and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you

  • English Explanation: Rahab confesses her faith. She acknowledges that the victory of Israel is inevitable because God has already handed them the land.

  • Urdu Explanation: راہب نے اعتراف کیا کہ وہ جانتی ہے کہ خدا نے یہ زمین بنی اسرائیل کو دے دی ہے اور پورے ملک میں ان کا خوف پھیلا ہوا ہے۔


Joshua 2:10

Verse: For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you when ye came out of Egypt and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites that were on the other side Jordan Sihon and Og whom ye utterly destroyed

  • English Explanation: News of God’s miracles—the Red Sea crossing and the defeat of powerful kings—had reached Jericho, causing great fear among the people.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس نے بتایا کہ اریحا کے لوگوں نے سنا ہے کہ کیسے خدا نے ان کے لیے بحیرہ قلزم کو خشک کیا اور انہوں نے طاقتور بادشاہوں کو شکست دی۔


Joshua 2:11

Verse: And as soon as we had heard these things our hearts did melt neither did there remain any more courage in any man because of you for the LORD your God he is God in heaven above and in earth beneath

  • English Explanation: Rahab makes a profound theological statement: she recognizes that the God of Israel is the supreme God of the entire universe.

  • Urdu Explanation: راہب نے ایک عظیم سچائی بیان کی کہ اسرائیل کا خدا ہی آسمان اور زمین کا واحد اور حقیقی خدا ہے، جس کی وجہ سے دشمنوں کے حوصلے پست ہو گئے ہیں۔


Joshua 2:12

Verse: Now therefore I pray you swear unto me by the LORD since I have shewed you kindness that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house and give me a true token

  • English Explanation: Having saved their lives, Rahab asks for a formal oath of protection for her family when the invasion begins.

  • Urdu Explanation: راہب نے ان کی جان بچانے کے بدلے میں یہ درخواست کی کہ جب اسرائیل حملہ کرے تو اس کے خاندان کی جان بخشی کی جائے۔


Joshua 2:13

Verse: And that ye will save alive my father and my mother and my brethren and my sisters and all that they have and deliver our lives from death

  • English Explanation: She specifically requests the safety of her parents and siblings, showing her deep care for her entire household.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس نے خاص طور پر اپنے والدین اور بہن بھائیوں کی سلامتی کی درخواست کی، جو اپنے خاندان کے لیے اس کی محبت کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔


Joshua 2:14

Verse: And the men answered her Our life for yours if ye utter not this our business And it shall be when the LORD hath given us the land that we will deal kindly and truly with thee

  • English Explanation: The spies agree, staking their own lives on her safety, provided she keeps their mission a secret.

  • Urdu Explanation: جاسوسوں نے وعدہ کیا کہ اگر وہ ان کا راز فاش نہیں کرے گی تو وہ اپنی جان دے کر بھی اس کے خاندان کی حفاظت کریں گے۔


Joshua 2:15

Verse: Then she let them down by a cord through the window for her house was upon the town wall and she dwelt upon the wall

  • English Explanation: Since the gates were shut, Rahab uses her strategic location on the wall to help them escape via a rope through a window.

  • Urdu Explanation: چونکہ شہر کے دروازے بند تھے، راہب نے انہیں کھڑکی کے ذریعے رسی سے نیچے اتار کر فرار ہونے میں مدد دی، کیونکہ اس کا گھر دیوار پر تھا۔


Joshua 2:16

Verse: And she said unto them Get you to the mountain lest the pursuers meet you and hide yourselves there three days until the pursuers be returned and afterward may ye go your way

  • English Explanation: She gives them expert advice to hide in the mountains for three days to avoid the search parties before returning to their camp.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس نے انہیں مشورہ دیا کہ وہ تین دن تک پہاڑوں میں چھپے رہیں تاکہ پیچھا کرنے والے واپس چلے جائیں اور وہ بحفاظت اپنے کیمپ پہنچ سکیں۔


Joshua 2:17

Verse: And the men said unto her We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear

  • English Explanation: The spies define the terms of the oath to ensure there is no misunderstanding regarding how she and her family will be identified.

  • Urdu Explanation: جاسوسوں نے اس حلف کی شرائط واضح کیں تاکہ اس کی اور اس کے خاندان کی شناخت میں کوئی غلطی نہ ہو۔


Joshua 2:18

Verse: Behold when we come into the land thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by and thou shalt bring thy father and thy mother and thy brethren and all thy father’s household home unto thee

  • English Explanation: The “scarlet thread” is the sign. Everyone inside the house marked with this red cord would be spared.

  • Urdu Explanation: سرخ رنگ کی رسی وہ نشانی تھی جسے کھڑکی میں باندھنا تھا۔ جس گھر پر یہ رسی ہوگی، اس کے اندر موجود تمام لوگ محفوظ رہیں گے۔


Joshua 2:19

Verse: And it shall be that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street his blood shall be upon his head and we will be guiltless and whosoever shall be with thee in the house his blood shall be on our head if any hand be upon him

  • English Explanation: Safety was only guaranteed inside the house. If anyone left the house during the battle, the spies would not be responsible for their death.

  • Urdu Explanation: حفاظت کی ضمانت صرف گھر کے اندر تھی۔ اگر کوئی جنگ کے دوران گھر سے باہر نکلا تو اس کی موت کی ذمہ داری جاسوسوں پر نہیں ہوگی۔


Joshua 2:20

Verse: And if thou utter this our business then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear

  • English Explanation: The final condition: if she betrays them or tells anyone about the plan, the oath is void. Secrecy was paramount for their survival and the success of the mission.

  • Urdu Explanation: آخری شرط یہ تھی کہ اگر اس نے یہ راز کسی کو بتایا تو وہ اس حلف سے آزاد ہو جائیں گے۔ مشن کی کامیابی کے لیے رازداری ضروری تھی۔
