Biblical Commentary: Joshua 6:12 – 7:5

Joshua 6:12

Verse: And Joshua rose early in the morning and the priests took up the ark of the LORD

  • English Explanation: Joshua demonstrates disciplined leadership and immediate obedience to God’s instructions. By rising early, he sets a standard for the nation, prioritizing the presence of God (represented by the Ark) in their mission.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے صبح سویرے اٹھ کر نظم و ضبط اور خدا کی فرمانبرداری کا ثبوت دیا۔ عہد کا صندوق جو خدا کی موجودگی کی علامت تھا، اسے اٹھا کر انہوں نے اپنے سفر اور مہم کا آغاز خدا کی مرضی کے مطابق کیا۔

Joshua 6:13

Verse: And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually and blew with the trumpets and the armed men went before them but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD the priests going on and blowing with the trumpets

  • English Explanation: This describes the specific divine formation for the march. The trumpets (shofars) were not for music but for signaling God’s sovereignty. The entire community—soldiers, priests, and the rear guard—moved as one spiritual unit.

  • Urdu Explanation: سات کاہن مینڈھے کے سینگوں کے نرسنگے بجاتے ہوئے خدا کے صندوق کے آگے چلے۔ مسلح سپاہی ان کے آگے اور باقی لشکر صندوق کے پیچھے تھا۔ یہ اس بات کی علامت تھی کہ جنگ صرف تلواروں سے نہیں بلکہ خدا کی قدرت سے لڑی جا رہی ہے۔

Joshua 6:14

Verse: And the second day they compassed the city once and returned into the camp so they did six days

  • English Explanation: For six days, Israel practiced patience and faith. They did exactly as told without seeing immediate results. This was a test of endurance and silent trust in God’s timing.

  • Urdu Explanation: چھ دن تک وہ مسلسل شہر کے گرد چکر لگاتے رہے۔ یہ صبر اور ایمان کا امتحان تھا۔ انہوں نے کسی فوری نتیجے کی خواہش کے بجائے خدا کے حکم پر مکمل بھروسہ کیا۔

Joshua 6:15

Verse: And it came to pass on the seventh day that they rose early about the dawning of the day and compassed the city after the same manner seven times only on that day they compassed the city seven times

  • English Explanation: The seventh day marked the climax. The intensity increased as they marched seven times. The number seven in scripture often signifies completion or perfection of God’s work.

  • Urdu Explanation: ساتویں دن انہوں نے شہر کے گرد سات چکر لگائے۔ بائبل میں عدد “سات” کام کی تکمیل اور کاملیت کو ظاہر کرتا ہے۔ یہ دن جیریکو (یریحو) کی فتح کا دن تھا۔

Joshua 6:16

Verse: And it came to pass at the seventh time when the priests blew with the trumpets Joshua said unto the people Shout for the LORD hath given you the city

  • English Explanation: Faith precedes the victory. Joshua commanded the people to shout before the walls fell. They were claiming the victory based on God’s promise, not on physical evidence.

  • Urdu Explanation: ساتویں چکر کے بعد یشوع نے لوگوں کو نعرہ مارنے کا حکم دیا۔ یہ نعرہ دیواریں گرنے سے پہلے مارا گیا، جو اس بات کا ثبوت تھا کہ انہیں خدا کے وعدے پر پورا یقین ہے کہ فتح ان کی ہو چکی ہے۔

Joshua 6:17

Verse: And the city shall be accursed even it and all that are therein to the LORD only Rahab the harlot shall live she and all that are with her in the house because she hid the messengers that we sent

  • English Explanation: Jericho was “devoted” to destruction as a first-fruit of the conquest. However, Rahab was spared because of her faith and her protection of the Israelite spies.

  • Urdu Explanation: شہر کو مکمل طور پر خدا کے لیے مخصوص (مختوم) کر دیا گیا تھا، یعنی اسے تباہ ہونا تھا۔ لیکن راحب طوائف اور اس کے خاندان کو بچا لیا گیا کیونکہ اس نے اسرائیلی جاسوسوں کی حفاظت کی تھی۔

Joshua 6:18

Verse: And ye in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing lest ye make yourselves accursed when ye take of the accursed thing and make the camp of Israel a curse and trouble it

  • English Explanation: A stern warning was given: do not take any of the devoted items for personal gain. Disobedience by one person could bring a curse upon the entire nation.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے سخت وارننگ دی کہ شہر کی کسی بھی ممنوعہ چیز کو اپنے پاس نہ رکھیں، ورنہ وہ خود بھی لعنت کے مستحق بن جائیں گے اور پورے اسرائیل کے لیے مصیبت کا سبب بنیں گے۔

Joshua 6:19

Verse: But all the silver and gold and vessels of brass and iron are consecrated unto the LORD they shall come into the treasury of the LORD

  • English Explanation: Precious metals were not for the soldiers but were to be dedicated to the Lord’s treasury, acknowledging that the victory belonged to Him alone.

  • Urdu Explanation: چاندی، سونا اور دھات کے برتن خدا کے لیے وقف تھے اور انہیں خدا کے خزانے میں جمع کیا جانا تھا، تاکہ ثابت ہو کہ یہ فتح خدا کی بدولت ملی ہے۔

Joshua 6:20

Verse: So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets and it came to pass when the people heard the sound of the trumpet and the people shouted with a great shout that the wall fell down flat so that the people went up into the city every man straight before him and they took the city

  • English Explanation: The miraculous moment: the sound of the trumpets and the unified shout of faith caused the massive walls to collapse. It was a supernatural intervention, allowing Israel to take the city easily.

  • Urdu Explanation: جیسے ہی نرسنگے بجے اور لوگوں نے نعرہ لگایا، یریحو کی دیواریں زمین بوس ہو گئیں۔ یہ ایک معجزہ تھا جس نے ثابت کیا کہ خدا اپنی قوم کے ساتھ لڑ رہا ہے۔

Joshua 6:21

Verse: And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city both man and woman young and old and ox and sheep and ass with the edge of the sword

  • English Explanation: This verse depicts the total judgment executed upon the inhabitants of Jericho. It reflects the divine decree regarding the purification of the land from pagan idolatry.

  • Urdu Explanation: انہوں نے شہر میں موجود ہر چیز کو ختم کر دیا، جو کہ اس وقت کے گناہگار معاشرے پر خدا کی عدالت کا اظہار تھا۔

Joshua 6:22

Verse: But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country Go into the harlot’s house and bring out thence the woman and all that she hath as ye sware unto her

  • English Explanation: Joshua remained faithful to the promise made by the spies. Even in the heat of battle, God’s people must honor their word and show mercy to those who align with God.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے اپنا وعدہ نبھایا اور ان دونوں جاسوسوں کو بھیجا جنہوں نے راحب کو بچانے کا عہد کیا تھا۔ جنگ کے دوران بھی خدا کے بندے اپنے قول کے پکے رہتے ہیں۔

Joshua 6:23

Verse: And the young men that were spies went in and brought Rahab and her father and her mother and her brethren and all that she had and they brought out all her kindred and left them without the camp of Israel

  • English Explanation: Rahab’s entire family was rescued. Initially, they were placed outside the camp (for ritual purification) before being integrated into Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation: جاسوسوں نے راحب اور اس کے پورے خاندان کو بچا لیا۔ شروع میں انہیں اسرائیلی لشکر گاہ سے باہر رکھا گیا تاکہ وہ پاک ہو کر قوم کا حصہ بن سکیں۔

Joshua 6:24

Verse: And they burnt the city with fire and all that was therein only the silver and the gold and the vessels of brass and of iron they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD

  • English Explanation: The city was completely consumed by fire as a sacrifice to the Lord. Only the indestructible metals were preserved for the sanctuary.

  • Urdu Explanation: پورے شہر کو آگ لگا دی گئی اور صرف سونا، چاندی اور دھاتی برتنوں کو خدا کے گھر کے خزانے کے لیے محفوظ کیا گیا۔

Joshua 6:25

Verse: And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive and her father’s household and all that she had and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day because she hid the messengers which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho

  • English Explanation: Rahab’s story is one of grace. She transitioned from an outsider to a resident of Israel, even entering the genealogy of Jesus Christ later.

  • Urdu Explanation: راحب کو اس کے ایمان کی وجہ سے زندگی ملی اور وہ ہمیشہ کے لیے اسرائیل کا حصہ بن گئی۔ یہ خدا کے فضل کی عظیم مثال ہے۔

Joshua 6:26

Verse: And Joshua adjured them at that time saying Cursed be the man before the LORD that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it

  • English Explanation: Joshua placed a prophetic curse on anyone who would rebuild Jericho. This was a reminder of God’s judgment. History records this curse being fulfilled centuries later in 1 Kings 16:34.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے یریحو کو دوبارہ تعمیر کرنے والے پر بددعا کی، جو کہ صدیوں بعد سچ ثابت ہوئی۔ یہ شہر خدا کی عدالت کی ایک یادگار کے طور پر کھنڈر رہنا تھا۔

Joshua 6:27

Verse: So the LORD was with Joshua and his fame was noised throughout all the country

  • English Explanation: God’s presence was the source of Joshua’s success. His reputation spread not because of his own might, but because the Lord clearly favored him.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا یشوع کے ساتھ تھا، اور اس کی شہرت پورے ملک میں پھیل گئی۔ یہ کامیابی یشوع کی اپنی طاقت سے نہیں بلکہ خدا کی مدد سے تھی۔

Joshua 7:1

Verse: But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing for Achan the son of Carmi the son of Zabdi the son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah took of the accursed thing and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel

  • English Explanation: Victory is followed by a crisis. One man, Achan, stole devoted items. His private sin affected the entire nation, showing that in God’s eyes, the community is interconnected.

  • Urdu Explanation: ایک شخص “عکن” کی چوری اور نافرمانی کی وجہ سے پوری قوم پر خدا کا غصہ نازل ہوا۔ گناہ چاہے چھپ کر کیا جائے، اس کے اثرات پوری جماعت پر پڑتے ہیں۔

Joshua 7:2

Verse: And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai which is beside Beth-aven on the east side of Bethel and spake unto them saying Go up and view the country And the men went up and viewed Ai

  • English Explanation: Joshua proceeded with the conquest, unaware of the sin in the camp. He sent spies to Ai, a much smaller city than Jericho.

  • Urdu Explanation: یشوع نے “عی” نامی چھوٹے شہر کی جاسوسی کے لیے آدمی بھیجے، وہ اس گناہ سے بے خبر تھے جو اسرائیلی لشکر کے اندر ہوا تھا۔

Joshua 7:3

Verse: And they returned to Joshua and said unto him Let not all the people go up but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai and make not all the people to labour thither for they are but few

  • English Explanation: The spies were overconfident. Based on human logic, they thought only a small force was needed. They failed to realize that without God’s favor, even a small enemy is unbeatable.

  • Urdu Explanation: جاسوسوں نے مشورہ دیا کہ پورا لشکر لے جانے کی ضرورت نہیں کیونکہ دشمن کمزور ہے۔ وہ انسانی عقل پر بھروسہ کر رہے تھے، یہ بھول کر کہ خدا کی مدد کے بغیر کوئی فتح ممکن نہیں۔

Joshua 7:4

Verse: So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men and they fled before the men of Ai

  • English Explanation: Israel suffered its first defeat. Despite their numbers and previous victory at Jericho, they were routed because God was no longer among them in the battle.

  • Urdu Explanation: تین ہزار اسرائیلی سپاہی “عی” کے لوگوں کے سامنے سے بھاگ کھڑے ہوئے۔ یہ ان کی پہلی بڑی شکست تھی کیونکہ خدا ان کے ساتھ نہ تھا۔

Joshua 7:5

Verse: And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim and smote them in the going down wherefore the hearts of the people melted and became as water

  • English Explanation: The loss of 36 lives caused a psychological collapse in Israel. Their courage “melted” because they realized something was spiritually wrong. They had lost their divine protection.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس جنگ میں ۳۶ اسرائیلی مارے گئے اور پوری قوم کا حوصلہ ٹوٹ گیا۔ انہیں احساس ہو گیا کہ خدا کی برکت ان کے ساتھ نہیں رہی، جس سے ان کے دل پانی کی طرح پگھل گئے۔
