Judges Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Judges 3:4

Verse: And they were to prove Israel by them to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses English Explanation: This verse establishes that God allowed certain nations to remain in the land as a test for Israel. It was a spiritual examination to see if the new generation would remain faithful to the Mosaic Law or succumb to pagan influences.

Judges 3:5

Verse: And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites Hittites and Amorites and Perizzites and Hivites and Jebusites English Explanation: Instead of conquering and driving out these nations as commanded, the Israelites settled among them. This proximity led to cultural and spiritual compromise.

Judges 3:6

Verse: And they took their daughters to be their wives and gave their daughters to their sons and served their gods English Explanation: Intermarriage was the direct result of living together. By forming family ties with idolaters, the Israelites were led away from the true God to worship pagan deities.

Judges 3:7

Verse: And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and forgat the LORD their God and served Baalim and the groves English Explanation: Israel’s spiritual decline led them to forget God and turn to Baalim (local gods) and Asherah poles (the groves). This highlights the cycle of sin where prosperity often led to spiritual amnesia.

Judges 3:8

Verse: Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years English Explanation: Because of their rebellion, God withdrew His protection. They were oppressed by the King of Mesopotamia for eight years, serving as a divine discipline.

Judges 3:9

Verse: And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel who delivered them even Othniel the son of Kenaz Caleb’s younger brother English Explanation: Repentance brings restoration. When Israel cried out, God raised Othniel, Caleb’s nephew/younger brother, as the first Judge to save them.

Judges 3:10

Verse: And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him and he judged Israel and went out to war and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim English Explanation: Othniel’s authority came from the Holy Spirit. He provided both civil leadership and military victory, successfully defeating the Mesopotamian king.

Judges 3:11

Verse: And the land had rest forty years And Othniel the son of Kenaz died English Explanation: The victory led to a long period of peace (40 years). The cycle concludes with the death of the leader, setting the stage for the next generation’s test.

Judges 3:12

Verse: And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD English Explanation: After Othniel died, the cycle repeated. God empowered Eglon, King of Moab, as an instrument of judgment against Israel. Judges 3:14

Verse: So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years English Explanation: This oppression lasted longer than the previous one—18 years—reflecting a deeper level of hardship.

Judges 3:15

Verse: But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD the LORD raised them up a deliverer Ehud the son of Gera a Benjamite a man lefthanded and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab English Explanation: God answers again, raising Ehud. Being left-handed was a tactical advantage, as guards wouldn’t expect a weapon hidden on his right thigh.

Judges 3:16

Verse: But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges of a cubit length and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh English Explanation: Ehud prepared a custom short sword. He concealed it on his right thigh, which was unconventional and allowed him to bypass security.

Judges 3:17

Verse: And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab and Eglon was a very fat man English Explanation: This verse notes Eglon’s physical appearance, which becomes relevant to how he is later killed. Judges 3:18

Verse: And when he had made an end to offer the present he sent away the people that bare the present English Explanation: After completing the formal tribute ceremony, Ehud dismissed his companions to ensure he could act alone. Judges 3:19

Verse: But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal and said I have a secret errand unto thee O king who said Keep silence And all that stood by him went out from him English Explanation: Ehud returned alone, claiming to have a secret message. Eglon, intrigued and overconfident, cleared the room of all guards.

Judges 3:20

Verse: And Ehud came unto him and he was sitting in a summer parlour which he had for himself alone And Ehud said I have a message from God unto thee And he arose out of his seat English Explanation: In the privacy of the summer chamber, Ehud used the “message from God” as a ruse to get the king to stand up, making him vulnerable.

Judges 3:21

Urdu Explanation:

Judges 3:22

Verse: And the haft also went in after the blade and the fat closed upon the blade so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly and the dirt came out English Explanation: The force and the king’s obesity caused the entire weapon to be swallowed by the wound, resulting in instant and gruesome death.

Judges 3:23

Verse: Then Ehud went forth through the porch and shut the doors of the parlour upon him and locked them English Explanation: Ehud calmly escaped through the porch, locking the doors behind him to delay discovery.
