Luke 5:1-34 — Verse-by-Verse Commentary
Luke 5:1
Verse: And it came to pass that as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God he stood by the lake of Gennesaret
English Explanation
The ministry of Jesus is gaining massive momentum. The crowds are so hungry for spiritual truth that they physically crowd around Him, eager to hear “the word of God.” This shows a shift from people merely seeking physical healings to seeking divine truth. The Lake of Gennesaret is another name for the Sea of Galilee. Jesus uses this natural setting as an open-air pulpit to accommodate the massive audience.
Luke 5:2
Verse: And saw two ships standing by the lake but the fishermen were gone out of them and were washing their nets
English Explanation
Jesus observes two empty fishing boats parked at the edge of the water. The fishermen have finished their night’s work and are engaged in the tedious, routine task of washing their nets. This step was crucial because debris and weeds left in the nets would rot and weaken the fabric. This setting establishes the ordinary, mundane backdrop against which a massive supernatural miracle is about to take place.
Luke 5:3
Verse: And he entered into one of the ships which was Simon’s and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land And he sat down and taught the people out of the ship
English Explanation
To avoid being overwhelmed by the pressing crowd and to ensure everyone could hear him clearly, Jesus gets into Simon Peter’s boat. By asking Simon to push out slightly into the water, Jesus creates a natural acoustic amphitheater where His voice can carry over the water to the shore. Sitting down was the traditional posture of authority for Jewish teachers (Rabbis).
Luke 5:4
Verse: Now when he had left speaking he said unto Simon Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a draught
English Explanation
After feeding the crowd spiritually, Jesus turns His attention to the practical and financial needs of His future disciples. He commands Simon to head out into the deep waters to fish. From a professional fisherman’s perspective, this request defied logic: fishing in daylight in deep waters was highly ineffective compared to shallow-water night fishing. Jesus is testing Simon’s willingness to obey beyond human logic.
Luke 5:5
Verse: And Simon answering said unto him Master we have toiled all the night and have taken nothing nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net
English Explanation
Simon honestly states the professional reality: they have worked tirelessly all night (the prime fishing time) and caught absolutely nothing. He is exhausted and discouraged. However, Simon exhibits profound faith and respect by addressing Jesus as “Master” and declaring, “nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.” True faith acts on God’s word despite past failures and human reasoning.
Luke 5:6
Verse: And when they had this done they inclosed a great multitude of fishes and their net brake
English Explanation
Immediate obedience yields supernatural results. As soon as they let down the nets, they catch such an overwhelming number of fish that the heavy-duty nets begin to tear. This demonstrates that Jesus holds absolute sovereignty over nature. Where human effort utterly failed, divine intervention brought instant, overflowing abundance.
Luke 5:7
Verse: And they beckoned unto their partners which were in the other ship that they should come and help them And they came and filled both the ships so that they began to sink
English Explanation
The catch is too massive for one boat to handle. Simon and his crew signal to their business partners (James and John) in the other boat to come and assist them. The harvest is so immense that both boats are filled to maximum capacity, to the point where they are physically dangerously close to sinking. This shows that God’s blessings often overflow to bless those around us.
Luke 5:8
Verse: When Simon Peter saw it he fell down at Jesus’ knees saying Depart from me for I am a sinful man O Lord
English Explanation
Confronted with the undeniable creative power of Jesus, Simon Peter experiences a moment of profound spiritual awakening. He realizes Jesus is not just a human teacher, but divine. In the presence of absolute holiness, Peter feels his own deep unworthiness and sinfulness, falling at Jesus’ feet and asking Him to depart, out of holy fear and reverence.
Luke 5:9
Verse: For he was astonished and all that were with him at the draught of the fishes which they had taken
English Explanation
This verse provides the reason for Peter’s intense reaction. Absolute awe and astonishment had gripped Peter and his entire fishing crew. As professional fishermen who knew the lake perfectly, they knew that what had just happened was physically impossible through natural means.
Luke 5:10
Verse: And so was also James and John the sons of Zebedee which were partners with Simon And Jesus said unto Simon Fear not from henceforth thou shalt catch men
English Explanation
James and John, Simon’s business partners, shared in this shock. Jesus responds to Peter’s fear not by departing, but by comforting him (“Fear not”) and giving him a new, divine identity and purpose. Jesus redefines their vocation: instead of catching fish for death, they will now “catch” (save) human souls for eternal life.
Luke 5:11
Verse: And when they had brought their ships to land they forsook all and followed him
English Explanation
This is a radical turning point. After bringing the record-breaking, highly valuable catch to the shore, Simon, Andrew, James, and John instantly abandon everything—their boats, their nets, their businesses, and their record profits—to follow Jesus permanently. Their encounter with Christ made everything else lose its ultimate value.
Luke 5:12
Verse: And it came to pass when he was in a certain city behold a man full of leprosy who seeing Jesus fell on his face and besought him saying Lord if thou wilt thou canst make me clean
English Explanation
In biblical times, leprosy was a devastating disease that physically disfigured a person and legally cut them off from society and corporate worship. This man was “full of leprosy,” meaning it was advanced and terminal. Showing extreme humility and faith, he falls on his face, recognizing Jesus’ absolute authority by saying He has the power to heal, only questioning if Jesus is willing.
Luke 5:13
Verse: And he put forth his hand and touched him saying I will be thou clean And immediately the leprosy departed from him
English Explanation
By Jewish Law, touching a leper made a person ceremonially unclean. Yet, Jesus reaches out and physically touches the man. Instead of Jesus becoming unclean, Jesus’ purity and power flow into the man, instantly eradicating the leprosy. Jesus explicitly states His willingness (“I will”) and demonstrates His word carries immediate physical healing power.
Luke 5:14
Verse: And he charged him to tell no man but go and shew thyself to the priest and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded for a testimony unto them
English Explanation
Jesus commands the healed man to remain quiet about the miracle initially and to follow the Levitical law (Leviticus 14) by presenting himself to the priest. This served two purposes: it honored the law given through Moses, and the priest’s official declaration of healing would serve as an undeniable legal testimony to the religious authorities that a supernatural messianic healing had occurred.
Luke 5:15
Verse: But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him and great multitudes came together to hear and to be healed by him of their infirmities
English Explanation
Despite Jesus’ instructions for secrecy, the news of this extraordinary healing spreads rapidly. Massive crowds gather from everywhere, driven by a dual hunger: to hear His life-giving teaching and to receive supernatural physical healing from their chronic sicknesses and weaknesses.
Luke 5:16
Verse: And he withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed
English Explanation
This verse provides a crucial insight into Jesus’ spiritual discipline. As His popularity and public demands reach an all-time high, Jesus deliberately withdraws from the crowds into lonely, desolate places (the wilderness) to pray. Jesus prioritizes communion with His Heavenly Father over public fame and constant ministry activity, showing that spiritual output requires spiritual intake.
Luke 5:17
Verse: And it came to pass on a certain day as he was teaching that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by which were come out of every town of Galilee and Judaea and Jerusalem and the power of the Lord was present to heal them
Explanation
Jesus is teaching inside a house, surrounded by a high-ranking delegation of Pharisees and legal experts (scribes) who traveled from all regions, including Jerusalem, to scrutinize Him. Luke notes that “the power of the Lord was present to heal,” highlighting that despite the critical and hostile spiritual environment created by the skeptics, God’s healing power was fully active.
Luke 5:18
Verse: And behold men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy and they sought means to bring him in and to lay him before him
English Explanation
A group of men arrive carrying a paralyzed friend (“taken with a palsy”) on a portable sleeping mat. Their sole focus is to get their helpless friend into the presence of Jesus because they believe completely in His power to heal. However, they encounter a physical roadblock due to the packed venue.
Luke 5:19
Verse: And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude they went upon the housetop and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus
English Explanation
True faith is creative and persistent. Blocked by the tight crowd at the door, these friends carry the heavy mat up the outside staircase to the flat roof. They dismantle the roof tiles and lower the paralyzed man right down through the ceiling into the center of the room, directly in front of Jesus. They refused to let obstacles stop them from reaching Christ.
Luke 5:20
Verse: And when he saw their faith he said unto him Man thy sins are forgiven thee
English Explanation
Jesus recognizes the collective, active faith of the friends and the paralytic man. Instead of addressing the obvious physical paralysis first, Jesus goes directly to the man’s deepest, eternal need: spiritual reconciliation. By pronouncing forgiveness of sins, Jesus treats spiritual healing as the primary human necessity and subtly claims a right reserved only for God.
Luke 5:21
Verse: And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason saying Who is this which speaketh blasphemies Who can forgive sins but God alone
English Explanation
The religious leaders are shocked. They recognize the theological weight of Jesus’ words. According to Old Testament scripture, sin is an offense against God; therefore, only God has the legal authority to forgive sins. Because they view Jesus as a mere man, they internally accuse Him of blasphemy—arrogating a unique divine privilege to Himself.
Luke 5:22
Verse: But when Jesus perceived their thoughts he answering said unto them What reason ye in your hearts
English Explanation
Jesus demonstrates His divinity by reading their private, unspoken thoughts. He directly addresses the unspoken skepticism and murmuring going on inside their hearts, proving that His knowledge is unlimited and supernatural, shattering their perception of Him as just an ordinary teacher.
Luke 5:23
Verse: Whether is easier to say Thy sins be forgiven thee or to say Rise up and walk
English Explanation
Jesus poses a brilliant logical dilemma. Verbally claiming to forgive sins is “easier” because it cannot be physically verified. Commanding a permanently paralyzed man to walk is incredibly difficult because the results are instantly visible to everyone. If the visible miracle happens, it proves the invisible reality of His power to forgive sins.
Luke 5:24
Verse: But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins (he said unto the sick of the palsy) I say unto thee Arise and take up thy couch and go into thine house
English Explanation
To definitively validate His divine identity and His authority to forgive sins, Jesus acts. Using His messianic title “Son of man,” He gives three rapid commands to the paralytic: stand up, pick up the heavy bed you were carried on, and walk home. The physical healing serves as the undeniable, visible proof of His invisible spiritual authority.
Luke 5:25
Verse: And immediately he rose up before them and took up that whereon he lay and departed to his own house glorifying God
English Explanation
The healing is instant and complete. In front of the critical eyes of the Pharisees, the man’s atrophied muscles and dead nerves are instantly restored. He stands up, lifts his own mat, and walks home, loudly praising and glorifying God. His life was completely transformed spiritually and physically.
Luke 5:26
Verse: And they were all amazed and they glorified God and were filled with fear saying We have seen strange things to day
English Explanation
The entire crowd is struck with overwhelming awe, reverence, and holy fear. Witnessing both the reading of thoughts, the forgiveness of sins, and the instantaneous physical healing of a paralytic leaves them astonished. They praise God, recognizing that they have witnessed things that defy human expectation and natural laws.
Luke 5:27
Verse: And after these things he went forth and saw a publican named Levi sitting at the receipt of custom and he said unto him Follow me
English Explanation
Jesus leaves the house and encounters Levi (also known as Matthew). Levi is a publican—a tax collector working for the occupying Roman Empire. Tax collectors were despised by Jewish society, viewed as traitors and corrupt extortioners. Yet, Jesus deliberately looks past societal stigma and extends a direct invitation to him: “Follow me.”
Luke 5:28
Verse: And he left all rose up and followed him
English Explanation
Levi’s response is immediate and absolute. He walks away from a highly lucrative, secure career under the Roman empire. Unlike the fishermen who could technically return to their boats later, Levi officially burns his bridges; walking away from a Roman tax post meant he could never reclaim it. He gives up material wealth for spiritual riches.
Luke 5:29
Verse: And Levi made him a great feast in his own house and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them
English Explanation
To celebrate his new life and to introduce his friends to Jesus, Levi throws a massive banquet at his residence. The guest list consists primarily of Levi’s social circle: other tax collectors and societal outcasts (“others/sinners”). Jesus explicitly validates Levi by attending and dining with people whom religious society shunned.
Luke 5:30
Verse: But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples saying Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners
English Explanation
The religious establishment is deeply offended by Jesus’ social circle. They do not confront Jesus directly but criticize Him to His disciples. In their rigid mindset, eating and drinking with notorious sinners compromised a teacher’s holiness and implied approval of their sinful lifestyles.
Luke 5:31
Verse: And Jesus answering said unto them They that are whole need not a physician but they that are sick
English Explanation
Jesus overhears and delivers a powerful, undeniable analogy. A doctor’s proper place is not among healthy people who don’t need medicine, but among the sick who desperately need intervention. Jesus redefines His ministry: He is the ultimate spiritual physician, and His presence among sinners is intentional, necessary medical work for the soul.
Luke 5:32
Verse: I came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance
English Explanation
Jesus clearly states His core mission manifesto. He did not come to invite those who proudly perceive themselves as “righteous” and self-sufficient (like the Pharisees). He came specifically for those who recognize their spiritual brokenness and sinfulness, offering them a pathway to true repentance and transformation.
Luke 5:33
Verse: And they said unto him Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees but thine eat and drink
English Explanation
The critics shift their attack to religious practices, specifically fasting and formal prayers. They note that the disciples of John the Baptist and the Pharisees engage in regular, austere fasting rituals as signs of deep piety. By contrast, Jesus’ disciples are observed enjoying food and celebrations, making them look spiritually undisciplined in the critics’ eyes.
Luke 5:34
Verse: And he said unto them Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast while the bridegroom is with them
English Explanation
Jesus responds with a wedding illustration. In Jewish culture, a wedding was a time of ultimate joy and celebration; it was culturally forbidden for wedding guests (“children of the bridechamber”) to fast while the bridegroom was present with them. Jesus identifies Himself as the divine Bridegroom. While He is physically present with them, it is a season for celebration and joy, not mournful fasting.
