Mark Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary & Explanation

Mark 2:5

Verse: When Jesus saw their faith he said unto the sick of the palsy Son thy sins be forgiven thee

  • English Explanation: Jesus responds first to the communal faith of the friends who carried the paralytic. Instead of instantly addressing the physical ailment, Jesus goes to the root of humanity’s deepest problem—sin. This demonstrates that spiritual healing and reconciliation with God are higher priorities than physical comfort.

Mark 2:6

Verse: But there were certain of the scribes sitting there and reasoning in their hearts

  • English Explanation: The scribes were the legal experts of Jewish law. They did not speak aloud, but their internal skepticism highlights the immediate friction between religious traditionalism and the divine authority present in Jesus.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:7

Verse: Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

  • English Explanation: The scribes’ theological premise was technically correct: only God has the ultimate authority to forgive sins committed against His law. However, their error was failing to recognize that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh. To them, His statement was pure blasphemy.

Mark 2:8

Verse: And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves he said unto them Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

  • English Explanation: Jesus proves His divinity by displaying omniscience. He knew their silent thoughts without being told. By exposing their hearts, He asserts His divine nature before even performing the physical miracle.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:9

Verse: Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy Thy sins be forgiven thee? or to say Arise and take up thy bed and walk?

  • English Explanation: Verbally claiming to forgive sins is “easier” because it cannot be visually verified. Healing a paralyzed man instantly is humanly impossible and offers immediate visible proof. Jesus poses this to show He has the authority to do both.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:10

Verse: But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins (he saith to the sick of the palsy)

  • English Explanation: Jesus uses His favorite self-designation, “Son of man,” derived from Daniel 7. He connects His visible power to heal with His invisible power to forgive sins, establishing His supreme earthly authority.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:11

Verse: I say unto thee Arise and take up thy bed and go thy way into thine house

  • English Explanation: Jesus issues a command that requires an immediate act of faith and physical movement from a lifelong paralytic. The command is absolute and leaves no room for gradual recovery.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:12

Verse: And immediately he arose took up the bed and went forth before them all? insomuch that they were all amazed and glorified God saying We never saw it on this fashion

  • English Explanation: The instant healing leaves the entire crowd astonished. The visible miracle confirms the invisible reality: the man’s sins were truly forgiven. The ultimate result of Christ’s work is always the glorification of God.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:13

Verse: And he went forth again by the sea side? and all the multitude resorted unto him and he taught them

  • English Explanation: Jesus transitions from the crowded house to the open space by the Sea of Galilee. Despite His miraculous deeds, His primary focus remains teaching the truths of the Kingdom of God to the pursuing crowds.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:14

Verse: And as he passed by he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom and said unto him Follow me And he arose and followed him

  • English Explanation: Levi (also known as Matthew) was a tax collector, a class despised as traitors and extortionists by fellow Jews. Jesus looks past societal stigma to call him. Levi’s immediate response involves leaving a lucrative career behind forever.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:15

Verse: And it came to pass that as Jesus sat at meat in his house many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples? for there were many and they followed him

  • English Explanation: Levi immediately throws a banquet to introduce his social circle to Jesus. Jesus does not isolate Himself from societal outcasts; instead, He fellowships with them, showing that His grace is accessible to all who recognize their need.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:16

Verse: And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners they said unto his disciples How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

  • English Explanation: The Pharisees viewed holiness as total separation from sinners. They question Jesus’ righteousness based on His social associations, confusing His mission of mercy with a compromise of moral standards.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:17

Verse: When Jesus heard it he saith unto them They that are whole have no need of the physician but they that are sick? I came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance

  • English Explanation: Jesus uses a medical analogy. A doctor belongs among the sick, not the healthy. He exposes the self-righteousness of the Pharisees: because they believe they are spiritually healthy, they miss the salvation He offers.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:18

Verse: And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast? and they come and say unto him Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast but thy disciples fast not?

  • English Explanation: Fasting was traditionally an expression of mourning or intense pleading. Critics notice a stark contrast between the joyful liberty of Jesus’ disciples and the austere practices of other religious groups.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:19

Verse: And Jesus said unto them Can the children of the bridechamber fast while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast

  • English Explanation: Jesus identifies Himself as the Bridegroom, a title reserved for Yahweh in the Old Testament. A wedding is a time of celebration, not mourning. Fasting would be inappropriate while the Savior is physically present among them.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:20

Verse: But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them and then shall they fast in those days

  • English Explanation: This is a subtle, early prophecy of Christ’s crucifixion and departure. Once He is physically removed, His disciples will enter a season where fasting and longing for His return are appropriate.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:21

Verse: No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment? else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old and the rent is made worse

  • English Explanation: New unshrunk cloth will shrink when washed, tearing away from weak, old fabric. Jesus explains that His new covenant message cannot merely be patched onto the rigid, expiring systems of Judaism.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:22

Verse: And no man putteth new wine into old bottles? else the new wine doth burst the bottles and the wine is spilled and the bottles will be marred? but new wine must be put into new bottles

  • English Explanation: Fermenting new wine expands. Old, brittle wineskins will burst under the pressure. The dynamic, life-giving gospel of grace requires completely new structures of faith, separate from legalistic traditions.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:23

Verse: And it came to pass that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day? and his disciples began as they went to pluck the ears of corn

  • English Explanation: Walking through fields was permitted, and plucking grain to satisfy immediate hunger was allowed by Old Testament law. However, the oral traditions of the Pharisees classified this simple action as forbidden “harvesting” on the Sabbath.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:24

Verse: And the Pharisees said unto him Behold why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

  • English Explanation: The Pharisees police the behavior of the disciples to accuse Jesus. They prioritize their rigid legalistic interpretations above human necessity and mercy.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:25

Verse: And he said unto them Have ye never read what David did when he had need and was an hungred he and they that were with him?

  • English Explanation: Jesus confronts their scriptural ignorance by citing a historical precedent from 1 Samuel 21. He demonstrates that human preservation and mercy take precedence over ceremonial regulations.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:26

Verse: How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest and did eat the shewbread which is not lawful to eat but for the priests and gave also to them which were with him?

  • English Explanation: King David ate the consecrated bread reserved exclusively for priests. God did not condemn David because the ceremonial law was never meant to inflict starvation on God’s servants.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:27

Verse: And he said unto them The sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath

  • English Explanation: This is a foundational principle of the Kingdom: God instituted the Sabbath as a gift of rest and restoration for humanity, not as a burdensome trap to enslave them with endless regulations.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 2:28

Verse: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath

  • English Explanation: Because Jesus is the divine Son of Man who established the Sabbath at creation, He has ultimate authority over how it should be observed, rendering the Pharisees’ rigid traditions completely void.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:1

Verse: And he entered again into the synagogue? and there was a man there which had a withered hand

  • English Explanation: Moving into Chapter 3, Jesus returns to the local synagogue. He encounters a man with a paralyzed, deformed hand, setting the stage for a direct confrontation with His critics.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:2

Verse: And they watched him whether he would heal him on the sabbath day? that they might accuse him

  • English Explanation: The religious leaders display absolute hardness of heart. They do not care about the suffering man’s restoration; they only view him as a trap to catch Jesus violating their Sabbath restrictions.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:3

Verse: And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand Stand forth

  • English Explanation: Jesus does not hide His actions. He brings the man into the center of the room, making the upcoming miracle a public testament against the hypocrisy of the onlookers.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:4

Verse: And he saith unto them Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days or to do evil? to save life or to kill? But they held their peace

  • English Explanation: Jesus exposes their moral bankruptcy. While they are plotting murder in their hearts on the Sabbath, Jesus is seeking to heal. Their silence reveals their inability to answer His penetrating question.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:5

Verse: And when he had looked round about on them with anger being grieved for the hardness of their hearts he saith unto the man Stretch forth thine hand And he stretched it out? and his hand was restored whole as the other

  • English Explanation: This verse showcases Jesus’ holy anger coupled with deep grief over human stubbornness. He heals the man instantly with a simple spoken word requiring no manual labor, bypassing even their finest legalistic objections.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:6

Verse: And the Pharisees went forth and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him how they might destroy him

  • Explanation: The irony is complete: the Pharisees break their own Sabbath ideals by immediately plotting a murder. They team up with the Herodians, a political faction they normally despise, united only by their mutual hatred of Christ.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:7

Verse: But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea? and a great multitude from Galilee followed him and from Judaea

  • English Explanation: Knowing their murderous plots, Jesus retreats to the Sea of Galilee. Despite official rejection from leadership, His popularity among the common people continues to swell exponentially across regional boundaries.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:8

Verse: And from Jerusalem and from Idumaea and from beyond Jordan? and they about Tyre and Sidon a great multitude when they had heard what great things he did came unto him

  • English Explanation: The news of Christ’s authority spreads beyond Jewish borders into gentile regions like Idumaea, Tyre, and Sidon. People travel vast distances driven by the transformative power of His ministry.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:9

Verse: And he spake to his disciples that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude lest they should throng him

  • English Explanation: The crowd’s desperation creates a literal physical danger. Jesus uses a boat as a makeshift floating pulpit, ensuring safety while keeping a clear distance to effectively teach the masses.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:10

Verse: For he had healed many? insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him as many as had plagues

  • English Explanation: The term “plagues” refers to severe, distressing physical diseases. The afflicted individuals were violently pushing forward, eager to just make physical contact with Jesus, recognizing the raw healing virtue flowing from Him.

  • Urdu Explanation:

Mark 3:11

Verse: And unclean spirits when they saw him fell down before him and cried saying Thou art the Son of God

  • English Explanation: Evil spirits immediately recognize Jesus’ cosmic authority. They are forced to bow down in submission, openly confessing His divine identity as the Son of God, a truth that religious elites remained blind to.

  • Urdu Explanation:
