Matthew Chapter 23

Matthew 23:23

  • Verse: Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin and have omitted the weightier matters of the law judgment mercy and faith these ought ye to have done and not to leave the other undone

Matthew 23:24

They carefully strained their wine through cloth to avoid accidentally swallowing an unclean insect (a gnat), yet metaphorically swallowed an entire camel—one of the largest unclean animals—by committing massive sins of injustice and cruelty.

Matthew 23:25

  • Verse: Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter but within they are full of extortion and excess

  • English Explanation: Jesus targets the contrast between external purity and internal corruption. The religious leaders obsessed over ceremonial handwashing and cleansing rituals for utensils, but their inner lives, motives, and hearts were filled with greed, extortion, and self-indulgence.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس آیت میں یسوع ظاہری پاکیزگی اور باطنی گندگی کا موازنہ کرتے ہیں۔ فریسی پیالے اور رکابی کو باہر سے تو خوب چمکاتے تھے (یعنی لوگوں کے سامنے خود کو نیک ظاہر کرتے تھے) لیکن ان کے دل اندر سے لوٹ کھسوٹ، لالچ اور نفس پرستی سے بھرے ہوئے تھے۔

Matthew 23:26

  • Verse: Thou blind Pharisee cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also

  • Explanation: True righteousness starts from within. Jesus offers a practical remedy: correct the motives of the heart, repent of internal sins, and seek true spiritual transformation. When the heart is clean, the outward behavior will naturally and genuinely follow suit.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ اے اندھے فریسی! پہلے پیالے کو اندر سے صاف کر تاکہ اس کا باہر بھی صاف ہو جائے۔ یعنی سب سے پہلے اپنے دلوں کی اصلاح کرو اور اپنے نیتوں کو پاک کرو، کیونکہ جب دل اندر سے پاک ہوگا تو ظاہری اعمال خود بخود سچے اور پاکیزہ ہو جائیں گے۔

Matthew 23:27

  • Verse: Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres which indeed appear beautiful outward but are within full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness

  • English Explanation: Jesus uses the powerful imagery of “whited sepulchres” (tombs painted white to look clean and prevent accidental defilement). While these tombs looked beautiful on the outside, they contained decaying corpses. Similarly, the Pharisees looked righteous to society, but their spiritual reality was dead and corrupt.

Matthew 23:28

  • Verse: Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity

  • English Explanation: Following the metaphor of the tombs, Jesus explicitly applies the truth to them. Their public persona was a mask of righteousness designed to win human praise, but God, who looks at the heart, saw a reality saturated with hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Matthew 23:29

  • Verse: Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous

  • English Explanation: Jesus calls out their historical hypocrisy. The religious leaders spent great effort building monuments and decorating the tombs of ancient prophets whom their ancestors had rejected and killed, pretending that they honor God’s messengers.

Matthew 23:30

  • Verse: And say If we had been in the days of our fathers we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets

Matthew 23:31

  • Verse: Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets

  • English Explanation: By calling the ancient murderers their “fathers,” the Pharisees inadvertently admitted their lineage. Jesus notes that they are not just biological descendants, but spiritual heirs to the same rebellious, murderous disposition against God’s truth.

Matthew 23:32

  • Verse: Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers

Matthew 23:33

  • Verse: Ye serpents ye generation of vipers how can ye escape the damnation of hell

  • English Explanation: Jesus uses incredibly severe language, calling them snakes and a brood of vipers. This mirrors John the Baptist’s earlier warnings. Their deceitfulness and poisonous influence on the people made them ripe for the judgment of hell, which they could not escape in their unrepentant state.

Matthew 23:34

  • Verse: Wherefore behold I send unto you prophets and wise men and scribes and some of them ye shall kill and crucify and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues and persecute them from city to city

Matthew 23:35

  • Verse: That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias whom ye slew between the temple and the altar

Matthew 23:36

Matthew 23:37

Matthew 23:38

  • Verse: Behold your house is left unto you desolate

  • English Explanation: Because they rejected the Messiah, their “house”—referring to both the city of Jerusalem and specifically the glorious Temple—is abandoned by God. It is no longer God’s dwelling place, but merely “your house,” left unprotected and doomed to utter ruin and desolation.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ دیکھو تمہارا گھر (یروشلم اور ہیکل) تمہارے لیے ویران چھوڑا جاتا ہے۔ جب خدا نے اس ہیکل کو چھوڑ دیا، تو وہ رومی فوجوں کے ہاتھوں تباہی اور ویرانی کے لیے مصلوب ہو گئی۔

Matthew 23:39

  • Verse: For I say unto you Ye shall not see me henceforth till ye shall say Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord

  • English Explanation: Jesus concludes His public ministry with a prophecy of His departure and eventual return. They will not see Him again in His messianic glory until a future day when the nation of Israel repents and welcomes Him back with the Messianic greeting from Psalm 118:26.

Matthew Chapter 24

Matthew 24:1

  • Verse: And Jesus went out and departed from the temple and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple

  • English Explanation: Jesus leaves the Temple complex for the final time, symbolizing God’s presence departing. As they walk away, the disciples, impressed by the massive stones, architectural beauty, and grandeur of Herod’s Temple, point out the buildings to Him, perhaps shocked by His earlier statement that it would be left desolate.

  • Urdu Explanation: متیٰ 24 کی شروعات میں، یسوع ہیکل سے باہر نکل کر جا رہے ہیں، جو علامتی طور پر خدا کے جلال کی رخصتی تھی۔ ان کے شاگرد ہیکل کی عظیم الشان عمارتوں اور خوبصورت پتھروں کو دیکھ کر یسوع کو ان کی طرف متوجہ کرتے ہیں، کیونکہ وہ ہیکل کی شان و شوکت سے متاثر تھے۔

Matthew 24:2

  • Verse: And Jesus said unto them See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you There shall not be left here one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down

  • English Explanation: Jesus delivers a shocking prophetic counter-statement. He declares that despite its current magnificence, the entire Temple complex will be utterly leveled. Not a single massive stone will remain on top of another. This was literally fulfilled in 70 AD when Roman soldiers burned the Temple and pried the stones apart to scavenge the melted gold.

Matthew 24:3

  • Verse: And as he sat upon the mount of Olives the disciples came unto him privately saying Tell us when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming and of the end of the world?

  • English Explanation: Sitting on the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem, the disciples ask Jesus three interconnected questions privately: 1) When will the Temple be destroyed? 2) What will be the sign of His Second Coming (Parousia)? 3) What will be the sign of the end of the age? Jesus’ response forms the famous “Olivet Discourse.”

Matthew 24:4

  • Verse: And Jesus answered and said unto them Take heed that no man deceive you

  • English Explanation: Jesus begins His discourse not with a timeline, but with a pastoral warning. The primary danger during intervals of crisis and anticipation is spiritual deception. He commands His followers to remain vigilant and discerning so that they are not led astray by false teachers or false movements.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع اپنے جواب کی شروعات کسی وقت یا تاریخ بتانے سے نہیں کرتے، بلکہ ایک انتباہ سے کرتے ہیں: “خبردار! کوئی تمہیں گمراہ نہ کرے۔” وہ اپنے پیروکاروں کو خبردار کرتے ہیں کہ مشکل اوقات میں روحانی گمراہی سب سے بڑا خطرہ ہوگی۔

Matthew 24:5

  • Verse: For many shall come in my name saying I am Christ and shall deceive many

  • English Explanation: Jesus specifies the first major sign and threat: the rise of messianic pretenders. Throughout history, and especially leading up to the fall of Jerusalem and the end times, individuals would emerge claiming to be the Messiah or holding divine authority, successfully deceiving large crowds.

Matthew 24:6

  • Verse: And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars see that ye be not troubled for all these things must come to pass but the end is not yet

  • English Explanation: Jesus warns that geopolitical chaos—local wars and threats of international conflicts—will occur regularly. However, believers should not panic or assume that these events signal the immediate end of the world. These tribulations are inevitable in a fallen world but are not the final climax.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ تم لڑائیوں اور لڑائیوں کی افواہیں سنو گے، لیکن پریشان نہ ہونا۔ یہ سب باتیں ہونا تو ضرور ہیں، لیکن یہ ابھی خاتمہ نہیں ہے۔ دنیا میں جنگیں تو ہوتی رہیں گی مگر یہ آخری وقت کی حتمی نشانی نہیں ہیں۔

Matthew 24:7

  • Verse: For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there shall be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in divers places

  • English Explanation: Jesus describes global and environmental upheavals: widespread warfare between nations, devastating famines, deadly disease outbreaks (pestilences), and natural disasters like earthquakes occurring randomly across the globe.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع بڑے پیمانے پر تباہی کا ذکر کرتے ہیں کہ قوم پر قوم اور سلطنت پر سلطنت چڑھائی کرے گی، اور جگہ جگہ قحط پڑیں گے، وبائیں پھیلیں گی اور زلزلے آئیں گے۔ یہ سب عالمی اور قدرتی آفات کی نشانیاں ہیں۔

Matthew 24:8

  • Verse: All these are the beginning of sorrows

  • English Explanation: Jesus uses a specific Greek word (odin), which refers to labor pains. Just as birth pangs indicate that a delivery is approaching and grow progressively more intense and frequent, these global disasters are merely the introductory pains signaling that the birth of the new age is drawing near.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ یہ سب باتیں “مصیبتوں کا شروع” ہیں۔ یہاں اصل یونانی لفظ کا مطلب “زہِ زہشت” یا دردِ زہ (بچے کی پیدائش کا درد) ہے۔ جیسے جیسے درد بڑھتا ہے، پیدائش قریب ہوتی ہے؛ اسی طرح یہ آفات آخری وقت کے قریب آنے کا اشارہ ہیں۔

Matthew 24:9

  • Verse: Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted and shall kill you and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake

  • English Explanation: Turning to the specific fate of His disciples, Jesus predicts intense global persecution. Believers will face betrayal, arrest, physical torture, and execution. True Christians will experience universal hostility from all societies simply because they bear the name of Jesus Christ.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس کے بعد یسوع شاگردوں پر آنے والے ظلم و ستم کا ذکر کرتے ہیں۔ وہ فرماتے ہیں کہ لوگ تمہیں مصیبت میں ڈالیں گے، تمہیں قتل کریں گے اور میرے نام کی خاطر تمام قومیں تم سے عداوت رکھیں گی۔ سچی ایمانداری کی قیمت ظلم و ستم کی صورت میں چکانی ہوگی۔

Matthew 24:10

  • Verse: And then shall many be offended and shall betray one another and shall hate one another

  • English Explanation: Under the intense pressure of social hostility and persecution, many professing believers will stumble, abandon their faith (apostasy), and turn against their brothers and sisters, betraying fellow Christians to the authorities out of fear and hatred.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ اس سخت وقت میں بہت سے لوگ ٹھوکر کھائیں گے (ایمان سے پھر جائیں گے) اور ایک دوسرے کو پکڑوائیں گے اور ایک دوسرے سے کینہ رکھیں گے۔ اندرونی غداری کلیسیا کو کمزور کرنے کی کوشش کرے گی۔

Matthew 24:11

  • Verse: And many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many

  • English Explanation: Along with external persecution and internal betrayal, the Church will face theological subversion. False prophets and deceptive religious teachers will arise inside and outside the community, preaching a compromised message and successfully leading many away from biblical truth.

Matthew 24:12

  • Verse: And because iniquity shall abound the love of many shall wax cold

  • English Explanation: As lawlessness, sin, and wickedness run rampant in society, it will have a chilling spiritual effect on people. The pervasive environment of deceit and cruelty will cause the genuine Christian love (agape) of many believers to grow cold, leading to apathy and spiritual numbness.

  • Urdu Explanation: یسوع فرماتے ہیں کہ بے دینی کے بڑھ جانے سے بہت سے لوگوں کی محبت ٹھنڈی پڑ جائے گی۔ گناہ اور برائی کا ماحول ایمانداروں کے اندر خدا اور انسانوں کے لیے محبت کو کم کر دے گا۔

Matthew 24:13

  • Verse: But he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved

  • English Explanation: In contrast to those who fall away or whose love grows cold, Jesus promises that those who possess true faith and persevere through the persecution, deception, and moral decay until the very end will receive ultimate salvation and eternal life.

  • Urdu Explanation: لیکن یسوع امید کا پیغام دیتے ہوئے کہتے ہیں کہ جو آخر تک برداشت کرے گا (قائم رہے گا) وہی نجات پائے گا۔ سچے ایمان کی پہچان آخری وقت تک وفادار رہنا ہے۔

Matthew 24:14

  • Verse: And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations and then shall the end come
