Matthew 8:5

Verse: And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum there came unto him a centurion beseeching him

Matthew 8:6

Verse: And saying Lord my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy grievously tormented

English Explanation: The centurion addresses Jesus as “Lord,” showing deep reverence. Roman masters rarely cared for the well-being of paralyzed or sick slaves, often viewing them as disposable property. This verse highlights the centurion’s extraordinary compassion for his paralyzed and suffering servant.

Matthew 8:7

Verse: And Jesus saith unto him I will come and heal him

English Explanation: Jesus responds immediately without hesitation. In Jewish law, entering a Gentile’s home would render a Jew ritually unclean. By offering to go directly to the centurion’s house, Jesus demonstrates that His mercy and power transcend traditional, legalistic, and cultural boundaries.

Matthew 8:8

Verse: The centurion answered and said Lord I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof but speak the word only and my servant shall be healed

English Explanation: The centurion recognizes his spiritual unworthiness as a Gentile and respects Jewish customs. More importantly, he displays monumental faith by stating that Jesus does not need to be physically present to perform a miracle; His spoken word carries absolute divine authority over illness.

Matthew 8:9

Verse: For I am a man under authority having soldiers under me and I say to this man Go and he goeth and to another Come and he cometh and to my servant Do this and he doeth it

English Explanation: As a military officer, the centurion understands the concept of a chain of command. He reasons that just as his own words compel absolute obedience from his soldiers, Jesus possesses cosmic authority over the spiritual and physical realms—meaning sickness must obey Jesus’ direct orders.

Matthew 8:10

Verse: When Jesus heard it he marvelled and said to them that followed Verily I say unto you I have not found so great faith no not in Israel

English Explanation: This is one of the rare instances where Jesus is said to have “marveled.” He publicly praises a Gentile Roman soldier for having greater faith than the religious leaders and people of Israel, who had the scriptures but still doubted Him.

Matthew 8:11

Verse: And I say unto you That many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven

English Explanation: Jesus delivers a radical prophetic message: salvation and entry into the Kingdom of Heaven are not exclusive to ethnic Jews. Gentiles from all corners of the earth (“east and west”) will share in the eternal fellowship of the patriarchs due to their faith.

Matthew 8:12

Verse: But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth

Explanation: “The children of the kingdom” refers to the biological descendants of Abraham who rejected Jesus. Jesus warns that national heritage cannot save anyone. Those who rely on lineage rather than faith will face ultimate separation from God, described here as eternal agony and regret.

Matthew 8:13

Verse: And Jesus said unto the centurion Go thy way and as thou hast believed so be it done unto thee And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour

English Explanation: Jesus grants the request based entirely on the centurion’s faith. The miracle happens instantly and remotely, proving that Jesus’ authority is boundless. The exact timing validates that the healing was a direct result of Christ’s word.

Matthew 8:14

Verse: And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house he saw his wife’s mother laid and sick of a fever

English Explanation: Entering Peter’s home, Jesus finds Peter’s mother-in-law bedridden with a severe fever. This verse provides historical insight into the domestic life of the disciples, proving Peter was married, and shows Jesus caring for the private, everyday needs of His followers’ families.

Matthew 8:15

Verse: And he touched her hand and the fever left her and she arose and ministered unto them

English Explanation: With a gentle physical touch, Jesus drives the fever away completely. Unlike natural recovery from a severe illness, which leaves a person weak for days, her healing is instantaneous and complete; she immediately feels energetic enough to serve her guests.

Matthew 8:16

Verse: When the even was come they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils and he cast out the spirits with his word and healed all that were sick

English Explanation: As the Sabbath ended at evening, people were legally free to travel and carry the sick. Jesus performs mass exorcisms and physical healings effortlessly using His spoken word, demonstrating supreme authority over both spiritual demons and physical infirmities without discrimination.

Matthew 8:17

Verse: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet saying Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses

English Explanation: Matthew connects Jesus’ healing ministry directly to Old Testament prophecy (Isaiah 53:4). Christ’s work was not just about performing wonders; He came as the Suffering Servant to take away the ultimate consequence of sin, including sickness and physical brokenness.

Matthew 8:18

Verse: Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him he gave commandment to depart unto the other side

English Explanation: Escaping the massive crowd was necessary for rest and to prevent the crowd from misinterpreting His mission as a purely political or earthly kingship. Moving to the “other side” of the Sea of Galilee also allowed Him to spread the Gospel to non-Jewish territories.

Matthew 8:19

Verse: And a certain scribe came and said unto him Master I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest

English Explanation: A scribe, traditionally an expert in Jewish religious law and typically critical of Jesus, offers absolute discipleship. However, Jesus tests his resolve, knowing that the scribe may be seeking earthly prestige or wealth by associating with a famous miracle worker.

Matthew 8:20

Verse: And Jesus saith unto him The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head

English Explanation: Jesus responds with the stark reality of discipleship. He claims no earthly comforts or permanent home, identifying Himself as the “Son of Man.” True discipleship requires a willingness to forgo material security for the sake of God’s kingdom.

Matthew 8:21

Verse: And another of his disciples said unto him Lord suffer me first to go and bury my father

English Explanation: This disciple is likely asking to remain at home until his aging father passes away and is buried, which could take years. It represents a request to postpone immediate commitment to Christ in favor of traditional family obligations.

Matthew 8:22

Verse: But Jesus said unto him Follow me and let the dead bury their dead

Matthew 8:23

Verse: And when he was entered into a ship his disciples followed him

English Explanation: The disciples demonstrate obedience by following Jesus into the boat. This physical journey acts as a metaphor for the Christian life—stepping into unknown territories and facing challenges simply because they are accompanying Christ.

Matthew 8:24

Verse: And behold there arose a great tempest in the sea insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves but he was asleep

English Explanation: The Sea of Galilee is notorious for sudden, violent storms. The text emphasizes that the storm was violent enough to swamp the boat, yet Jesus was asleep. His sleep shows His complete peace, trust in God, and absolute humanity amidst chaotic surroundings.

Matthew 8:25

Verse: And his disciples came to him and awoke him saying Lord save us we perish

English Explanation: Terrified for their lives, the disciples wake Jesus. Even though some of them were experienced fishermen who knew these waters well, they realized they were utterly helpless and recognized Jesus as their only source of salvation.

Matthew 8:26

Verse: And he saith unto them Why are ye fearful O ye of little faith Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm

English Explanation: Jesus diagnoses their fear as a lack of faith; since He was in the boat with them, they were never truly in danger. He then speaks to the wind and waves as if commanding erratic servants, and nature calms down instantly.

Matthew 8:27

Verse: But the men marvelled saying What manner of man is this that even the winds and the sea obey him

English Explanation: The eyewitnesses are struck with awe. In Old Testament theology, only Yahweh has control over the raging seas. By calming the storm with a word, Jesus reveals His divine nature and identity to His awestruck disciples.

Matthew 8:28

Verse: And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes there met him two possessed with devils coming out of the tombs exceeding fierce so that no man might pass by that way

English Explanation: Arriving in Gentile territory, Jesus encounters two violent, demon-possessed men living among tombs (places of profound ritual uncleanness). Their state shows the destructive, isolating nature of demonic control over human life.

Matthew 8:29

Verse: And behold they cried out saying What have we to do with thee Jesus thou Son of God art thou come hither to torment us before the time

English Explanation: The demons instantly recognize Jesus’ identity as the “Son of God” and acknowledge His supreme authority. They are fully aware of their ultimate destiny of judgment and fear that Jesus has arrived early to execute their final punishment.

Matthew 8:30

Verse: And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding

English Explanation: A large herd of pigs was grazing nearby. Because pigs are unclean animals under Mosaic law, their presence confirms that this event took place in a predominantly Gentile region.
Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): وہاں قریب ہی سوروں کا ایک بڑا غول چر رہا تھا۔ چونکہ موسیٰ کے قانون کے مطابق سور ایک ناپاک جانور ہے، اس لیے ان کی موجودگی یہ ثابت کرتی ہے کہ یہ ایک غیر یہودی علاقہ تھا۔

Matthew 8:31

Verse: So the devils besought him saying If thou cast us out suffer us to go away into the herd of swine

English Explanation: The demons acknowledge they cannot stand against Jesus’ will and cannot even enter animals without His permission. They beg to be sent into the swine rather than being cast into the bottomless pit of premature torment.

Matthew 8:32

Verse: And he said unto them Go And when they were come out they went into the herd of swine and behold the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea and perished in the waters

English Explanation: Jesus commands them to “Go.” The immediate self-destruction of the herd demonstrates the inherently chaotic and murderous nature of demonic forces, while also illustrating the immense value Jesus places on saving two human souls over financial assets.

Matthew 8:33

Verse: And they that kept them fled and went their ways into the city and told every thing and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils

English Explanation: The herdsmen flee to spread the news. Their report focuses heavily on the financial catastrophe of losing the herd along with the miraculous liberation of the two fiercely possessed men, alarming the city’s residents.
Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): سوروں کے چرواہے ڈر کر شہر کی طرف بھاگے اور وہاں جا کر سب کچھ سچ سچ بتا دیا کہ کس طرح وہ خطرناک آدمی ٹھیک ہو گئے اور سوروں کا غول تباہ ہو گیا۔

Matthew 8:34

Verse: And behold the whole city came out to meet Jesus and when they saw him they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts

English Explanation: Instead of rejoicing over the restoration of two tormented human beings, the townspeople value their economic stability and fear Jesus’ immense, unpredictable power. They request that He leave their region entirely, and Jesus respects their choice.

Chapter 9

Matthew 9:1

Verse: And he entered into a ship and passed over and came into his own city

English Explanation: Respecting the wishes of the Gergesenes, Jesus leaves. He crosses the Sea of Galilee again and returns to Capernaum, which Matthew calls “his own city” due to it being Jesus’ primary residential and ministerial base during this period.
Urdu Explanation (تفصیل): وہاں کے لوگوں کی مرضی کا احترام کرتے ہوئے یسوع وہاں سے چلے گئے۔ وہ دوبارہ جھیل پار کر کے کفرناحوم آئے، جسے متی نے “ان کا اپنا شہر” کہا ہے کیونکہ یہ ان دنوں ان کی وزارت کا مرکز تھا۔

Matthew 9:2

Matthew 9:3

Verse: And behold certain of the scribes said within themselves This man blasphemeth
