Nahum Chapter

Verse-by-Verse Commentary and Explanation

Micah 7:5

Verse: Trust ye not in a friend put ye not confidence in a guide keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom

English Explanation

During times of severe moral decay, society fractures to the point where basic human relationships dissolve. Micah warns that corruption has run so deep that even closest friends, mentors, and romantic partners cannot be trusted with secrets. It highlights the total breakdown of societal cohesion and mutual trust when people turn away from God.

Micah 7:6

Verse: For the son dishonoureth the father the daughter riseth up against her mother the daughter in law against her mother in law a man’s enemies are the men of his own house

English Explanation

This verse details the absolute collapse of the nuclear family. The most sacred and fundamental bonds—parent and child, in-laws—are replaced by rebellion and hostility. This total domestic betrayal indicates a deeply broken world, a theme that Jesus later quotes in the New Testament (Matthew 10:35-36) regarding the divisions that arise over spiritual truth.

Micah 7:7

Verse: Therefore I will look unto the LORD I will wait for the God of my salvation my God will hear me

English Explanation

In response to the absolute unfaithfulness of humanity, the prophet shifts his focus entirely to God. When horizontal human relationships fail, the vertical relationship with God remains absolute. This is a powerful declaration of hope and patience, establishing that God is a reliable savior who always listens to the faithful.

Micah 7:8

Verse: Rejoice not against me O mine enemy when I fall I shall arise when I sit in darkness the LORD shall be a light unto me

English Explanation

A defiant cry of faith against mocking enemies (such as Babylon or competing nations). The prophet, speaking on behalf of Israel, acknowledges their temporary defeat (“fall” and “darkness”), but asserts that it is not permanent. God will intervene to restore them and act as their ultimate light.

Micah 7:9

Verse: I will bear the indignation of the LORD because I have sinned against him until he plead my cause and execute judgment for me he will bring me forth to the light and I shall behold his righteousness

English Explanation

The speaker shows true repentance by willingly accepting God’s discipline and anger, acknowledging that they have sinned. However, there is firm confidence that after the period of correction, God will shift from being the Judge to being the Advocate, defending His people against their oppressors and showing His righteousness.

Micah 7:10

Verse: Then she that is mine enemy shall see it and shame shall cover her which said unto me Where is the LORD thy God mine eyes shall behold her now shall she be trodden down as the mire of the streets

English Explanation

When God vindicates His people, those heathen nations who mocked Israel by asking “Where is your God?” will be covered in shame. The tables will turn completely; those who once oppressed God’s people will face complete humiliation and destruction, trampled like mud in the streets.

Micah 7:11

Verse: In the day that thy walls are to be built in that day shall the decree be far removed

English Explanation

This is a prophetic promise of restoration. The “walls” refer to the rebuilding of Jerusalem and its community. The “decree” that limited them or forced them into exile will be extended, broken, or removed, allowing for expansion and freedom.

Micah 7:12

Verse: In that day also he shall come even to thee from Assyria and from the fortified cities and from the fortress even to the river and from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain

English Explanation

A prophecy concerning the global return of the exiled Jewish remnants. People will flock back to the restored land from all corners of the known world—from powerful empires like Assyria and Egypt (the river Euphrates), crossing seas and mountains to return home.

Micah 7:13

Verse: Notwithstanding the land shall be desolate because of them that dwell therein for the fruit of their doings

English Explanation

Before the grand restoration, justice must take its course. The land must first endure a period of desolation and exile because of the wickedness and spiritual adultery committed by its inhabitants. It emphasizes that actions have consequences.

Micah 7:14

Verse: Feed thy people with thy rod the flock of thine heritage which dwell solitarily in the wood in the midst of Carmel let them feed in Bashan and Gilead as in the days of old

English Explanation

The prophet prays to God, using the metaphor of a Shepherd caring for His sheep. He asks God to guide and feed His isolated heritage with His staff (“rod”), leading them out of perilous places into fertile, historical pasturelands like Carmel, Bashan, and Gilead.

Micah 7:15

Verse: According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I shew unto him marvellous things

English Explanation

God responds directly to the prophet’s prayer, promising that the future redemption and deliverance of His people will be accompanied by miraculous events and wonders, just like the historic Exodus from Egypt.

Micah 7:16

Verse: The nations shall see and be confounded at all their might they shall lay their hand upon their mouth their ears shall be deaf

English Explanation

When surrounding pagan nations witness God’s miraculous restoration of Israel, their own geopolitical and military power will seem useless. They will be utterly dumbfounded (putting hands over their mouths in silence) and stunned into deafness by the magnitude of God’s power.

Micah 7:17

Verse: They shall lick the dust like a serpent they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth they shall be afraid of the LORD our God and shall fear because of thee

English Explanation

The enemies will be utterly humbled and brought low, reduced to crawling out of their hiding places in fear like snakes and worms. Their pride will be shattered, and they will turn to the Lord in trembling terror.

Micah 7:18

Verse: Who is a God like unto thee that pardoneth iniquity and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage he retaineth not his anger for ever because he delighteth in mercy

English Explanation

A beautiful praise of God’s character. The name Micah means “Who is like Yahweh?”, and here the prophet plays on his own name. God is completely unique because, unlike pagan deities, He forgives sins and rejoices in steadfast love and mercy rather than eternal anger.

Micah 7:19

Verse: He will turn again he will have compassion upon us he will subdue our iniquities and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea

English Explanation

This verse provides immense spiritual comfort. God will once again show active compassion. He will not only forgive sins but will actively trample and conquer them (“subdue”), tossing them into the deep ocean where they can never be recovered or remembered against His people.

Micah 7:20

Verse: Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob and the mercy to Abraham which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old

English Explanation

The book of Micah closes with total confidence in God’s covenant faithfulness. God will honor the ancient oaths and promises made centuries prior to Abraham and Jacob. God’s ultimate word to His people is not judgment, but historical, unchanging mercy.

Nahum Chapter 1

Nahum 1:1

Verse: The burden of Nineveh The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite

English Explanation

This serves as the title and introduction to the book of Nahum. “The burden” denotes a heavy prophetic oracle of doom against Nineveh, the capital city of the brutal Assyrian Empire. Nahum, whose name means “comforter,” records what he saw in a prophetic vision.

Nahum 1:2

Verse: God is jealous and the LORD revengeth the LORD revengeth and is furious the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries and he reserveth wrath for his enemies

English Explanation

Nahum portrays God as a jealous protector of His people who executes absolute justice. His vengeance is not an uncontrolled human rage, but a holy, burning indignation against systematic evil, oppression, and enmity toward righteousness.

Nahum 1:3

Verse: The LORD is slow to anger and great in power and will not at all acquit the wicked the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm and the clouds are the dust of his feet

English Explanation

While God is incredibly patient (“slow to anger”), His patience must not be mistaken for weakness. He possesses ultimate power and will judge unrepentant sinners. Nahum uses magnificent poetic imagery, describing storms, whirlwinds, and cosmic clouds as mere dust under God’s feet to display His sovereignty over nature.

Nahum 1:4

Verse: He rebuketh the sea and maketh it dry and drieth up all the rivers Bashan languisheth and Carmel and the flower of Lebanon languisheth

English Explanation

God’s absolute authority over creation is further highlighted. At His command, seas and rivers dry up (reminiscent of the Red Sea crossing). Even the most lush, fertile, and famous agricultural regions of the ancient near east—Bashan, Carmel, and Lebanon—wither away into nothingness before His supreme presence.
