Verse-by-Verse Commentary

Numbers 23:4

Verse: And God met Balaam and he said unto him I have prepared seven altars and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram

  • English Explanation: Balaam attempts to influence God through ritual sacrifice. He boasts about his religious efforts (the seven altars) to gain God’s favor for his own agenda.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا بلعام سے ملا اور بلعام نے کہا کہ میں نے سات قربان گاہیں تیار کی ہیں اور ہر ایک پر ایک بیل اور ایک مینڈھا چڑھایا ہے۔ وہ اپنی مذہبی کوششوں کے ذریعے خدا کو راضی کرنا چاہتا تھا۔

Numbers 23:5

Verse: And the LORD put a word in Balaams mouth and said Return unto Balak and thus thou shalt speak

  • English Explanation: God takes control of the situation. He does not let Balaam speak his own desires but places specific, divine words into his mouth.

  • Urdu Explanation: خداوند نے بلعام کے منہ میں کلام ڈالا اور حکم دیا کہ بالاق کے پاس واپس جاؤ اور یہی کہنا۔ یہ ظاہر کرتا ہے کہ کلام انسان کا نہیں بلکہ خدا کا ہے۔

Numbers 23:6

Verse: And he returned unto him and lo he stood by his burnt sacrifice he and all the princes of Moab

  • English Explanation: Balaam finds King Balak waiting expectantly by the sacrifices, surrounded by the political leaders of Moab, hoping for a curse.

  • Urdu Explanation: جب وہ واپس آیا تو بالاق اپنی سوختنی قربانی کے پاس کھڑا تھا اور موآب کے تمام شہزادے اس کے ساتھ تھے جو بددعا کے منتظر تھے۔

Numbers 23:7

Verse: And he took up his parable and said Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram out of the mountains of the east saying Come curse me Jacob and come defy Israel

  • English Explanation: Balaam begins his poetic prophecy, acknowledging that he was hired to supernaturally attack Israel through curses.

  • Urdu Explanation: اس نے اپنی تمثیل شروع کی اور کہا کہ شاہِ موآب مجھے مشرق کے پہاڑوں سے لایا ہے تاکہ میں یعقوب پر لعنت کروں اور اسرائیل کو ذلیل کروں۔

Numbers 23:8

Verse: How shall I curse whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy whom the LORD hath not defied?

  • English Explanation: This is a central truth: human words cannot undo God’s favor. If God has blessed someone, no sorcery or curse can stick.

  • Urdu Explanation: میں اسے کیسے بددعا دوں جسے خدا نے بددعا نہیں دی؟ انسان کی طاقت خدا کے فضل کو ختم نہیں کر سکتی۔

Numbers 23:9

Verse: For from the top of the rocks I see him and from the hills I behold him lo the people shall dwell alone and shall not be reckoned among the nations

  • English Explanation: Balaam observes Israel’s unique status. They are a set-apart people, distinct from all other nations in their identity and divine calling.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ ایک ایسی قوم ہے جو اکیلی بستی ہے اور دوسری قوموں میں شمار نہیں ہوتی۔ یہ اسرائیل کی انفرادیت اور پاکیزگی کی علامت ہے۔

Numbers 23:10

Verse: Who can count the dust of Jacob and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his!

  • English Explanation: Balaam acknowledges the vast growth of Israel (fulfilling God’s promise to Abraham) and expresses a desire to share in the peaceful end of the righteous.

  • Urdu Explanation: یعقوب کی کثرت کو کون گن سکتا ہے؟ بلعام تمنا کرتا ہے کہ اس کا انجام بھی صادقوں جیسا ہو کیونکہ وہ اسرائیل پر خدا کی برکت دیکھتا ہے۔

Numbers 23:11

Verse: And Balak said unto Balaam What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies and behold thou hast blessed them altogether

  • English Explanation: Balak is frustrated. He paid for a curse but received a total blessing for his enemies instead.

  • Urdu Explanation: بالاق غصے میں کہتا ہے کہ تو نے یہ کیا کیا؟ میں نے تجھے دشمنوں پر لعنت کے لیے بلایا تھا اور تو نے انہیں برکت دے دی۔

Numbers 23:12

Verse: And he answered and said Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?

  • English Explanation: Balaam admits his limitation; he is physically unable to speak anything other than what God commands.

  • Urdu Explanation: بلعام نے جواب دیا کہ کیا مجھے وہی نہیں کہنا چاہیے جو خداوند نے میرے منہ میں ڈالا ہے؟ وہ خدا کے حکم کا پابند تھا۔

Numbers 23:13

Verse: And Balak said unto him Come I pray thee with me unto another place from whence thou mayest see them thou shalt see but the utmost part of them and shalt not see them all and curse me them from thence

  • English Explanation: Balak tries a different tactic, thinking a different viewpoint or a limited view of the people might make it easier to curse them.

  • Urdu Explanation: بالاق نے سوچا کہ شاید جگہ بدلنے سے اثر بدل جائے، اس لیے وہ اسے دوسری جگہ لے گیا جہاں سے صرف قوم کا ایک حصہ نظر آئے۔

Numbers 23:14

Verse: And he brought him into the field of Zophim to the top of Pisgah and built seven altars and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar

  • English Explanation: They repeat the ritual at a new location (Pisgah), showing their persistence in trying to manipulate the Divine.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ اسے پسگہ کی چوٹی پر لے گیا اور دوبارہ وہی قربانیاں پیش کیں تاکہ کسی طرح خدا کا ارادہ بدل سکے۔

Numbers 23:15

Verse: And he said unto Balak Stand here by thy burnt offering while I meet the LORD yonder

  • English Explanation: Balaam leaves Balak at the altar to seek a second revelation from God.

  • Urdu Explanation: بلعام نے بالاق سے کہا کہ یہاں قربانی کے پاس کھڑے رہو جب کہ میں وہاں جا کر خداوند سے ملتا ہوں۔

Numbers 23:16

Verse: And the LORD met Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said Go again unto Balak and say thus

  • English Explanation: Once again, God intervenes and dictates exactly what must be said, reinforcing His previous message.

  • Urdu Explanation: خداوند دوبارہ بلعام سے ملا اور اس کے منہ میں کلام ڈال کر اسے بالاق کے پاس بھیجا۔

Numbers 23:17

Verse: And when he came to him behold he stood by his burnt offering and the princes of Moab with him And Balak said unto him What hath the LORD spoken?

  • English Explanation: Balak is anxious and asks immediately for the result of the meeting with God.

  • Urdu Explanation: بالاق نے بے تابی سے پوچھا کہ خداوند نے کیا فرمایا ہے؟ اسے اب بھی بددعا کی امید تھی۔

Numbers 23:18

Verse: And he took up his parable and said Rise up Balak and hear hearken unto me thou son of Zippor

  • English Explanation: Balaam calls for the king’s undivided attention. The message is solemn and authoritative.

  • Urdu Explanation: بلعام نے اپنی دوسری تمثیل شروع کی اور بالاق کو توجہ سے سننے کا حکم دیا۔

Numbers 23:19

Verse: God is not a man that he should lie neither the son of man that he should repent hath he said and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken and shall he not make it good?

  • English Explanation: This is one of the most famous verses in the Bible, affirming God’s absolute truth and immutability. Unlike humans, God never changes His mind or breaks His promises.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا انسان نہیں کہ جھوٹ بولے اور نہ وہ آدم زاد ہے کہ اپنا ارادہ بدلے۔ جو اس نے کہا ہے وہ اسے پورا کرے گا۔ یہ خدا کی وفاداری کی عظیم دلیل ہے۔

Numbers 23:20

Verse: Behold I have received commandment to bless and he hath blessed and I cannot reverse it

  • English Explanation: Balaam explains that the blessing is irreversible because it originates from God’s decree.

  • Urdu Explanation: مجھے برکت دینے کا حکم ملا ہے اور جب اس نے برکت دے دی تو میں اسے بدل نہیں سکتا۔

Numbers 23:21

Verse: He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel the LORD his God is with him and the shout of a king is among them

  • English Explanation: Because of God’s covenant grace, He chooses to see Israel as righteous. His presence among them is like that of a victorious King.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا نے اسرائیل میں کوئی بدی نہیں دیکھی کیونکہ اس کا فضل ان کے ساتھ ہے اور ان کے درمیان بادشاہ (خدا) کی للکار ہے۔

Numbers 23:22

Verse: God brought them out of Egypt he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn

  • English Explanation: The power of the Exodus is the proof of Israel’s strength, which is derived directly from God’s might.

  • Urdu Explanation: خدا انہیں مصر سے نکال لایا اور ان کی قوت ایک جنگلی سانڈ (یا عظیم طاقت) جیسی ہے جسے کوئی روک نہیں سکتا۔

Numbers 23:23

Verse: Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob neither is there any divination against Israel according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel What hath God wrought!

  • English Explanation: Magic and sorcery have no power over those protected by God. History will look at Israel and marvel at what God has accomplished for them.

  • Urdu Explanation: یعقوب پر کوئی جادو نہیں چل سکتا۔ لوگ اسرائیل کو دیکھ کر کہیں گے کہ دیکھو خدا نے کیا ہی عظیم کام کیا ہے!

Numbers 23:24

Verse: Behold the people shall rise up as a great lion and lift up himself as a young lion he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey and drink the blood of the slain

  • English Explanation: Israel is described as a powerful predator that will be victorious over its enemies, not stopping until the conquest is complete.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ قوم ایک شیر کی طرح اٹھے گی جو اپنے شکار کو ختم کیے بغیر نہیں بیٹھتی۔ یہ ان کی فتح اور غلبے کی علامت ہے۔

Numbers 23:25

Verse: And Balak said unto Balaam Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all

  • English Explanation: In total defeat, Balak tells Balaam to just stay quiet. If he can’t curse them, he should at least stop blessing them.

  • Urdu Explanation: بالاق نے مایوسی میں کہا کہ اگر تو بددعا نہیں دے سکتا تو کم از کم انہیں برکت تو نہ دے۔

Numbers 23:26

Verse: But Balaam answered and said unto Balak Told not I thee saying All that the LORD speaketh that I must do?

  • English Explanation: Balaam reiterates his earlier warning: he is merely a vessel for God’s word and has no personal choice in the matter.

  • Urdu Explanation: بلعام نے جواب دیا کہ کیا میں نے تجھے پہلے نہیں کہا تھا کہ جو کچھ خداوند کہے گا مجھے وہی کرنا ہوگا؟

Numbers 23:27

Verse: And Balak said unto Balaam Come I pray thee I will bring thee unto another place peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence

  • English Explanation: Despite repeated failure, Balak’s desperation leads him to try one more location, still hoping to find a way to manipulate God’s will.

  • Urdu Explanation: بالاق نے ہار نہیں مانی اور بلعام کو ایک اور جگہ لے جانے کی کوشش کی کہ شاید وہاں سے خدا انہیں بددعا دینے کی اجازت دے دے۔
