Verse-by-Verse Commentary: Ruth Chapters 1 & 2

Ruth 1:3

Verse: And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died and she was left and her two sons

  • English Explanation: The story begins with a tragedy. Naomi, who moved to Moab to escape famine, loses her primary support and protector, her husband Elimelech, leaving her alone with her two sons in a foreign land.

  • Urdu Explanation: کہانی کا آغاز ایک المیے سے ہوتا ہے۔ نعومی جو کال سے بچنے کے لیے موآب آئی تھی اپنے شوہر الیملک کو کھو دیتی ہے اور ایک پردیس میں اپنے دو بیٹوں کے ساتھ اکیلی رہ جاتی ہے۔

Ruth 1:4

Verse: And they took them wives of the women of Moab the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth and they dwelled there about ten years

  • English Explanation: Naomi’s sons, Mahlon and Chilion, married local Moabite women. Despite the cultural differences, the family remained in Moab for a decade, attempting to rebuild their lives.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی کے بیٹوں محلون اور کلیون نے مقامی موآبی عورتوں سے شادی کی۔ ثقافتی اختلافات کے باوجود یہ خاندان دس سال تک موآب میں مقیم رہا اور اپنی زندگی دوبارہ شروع کرنے کی کوشش کی۔

Ruth 1:5

Verse: And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband

  • English Explanation: Tragedy strikes again as both of Naomi’s sons pass away. Naomi is now completely bereft of her male kin, a devastating social and economic position in ancient times.

  • Urdu Explanation: المیہ دوبارہ جنم لیتا ہے اور نعومی کے دونوں بیٹے بھی وفات پا جاتے ہیں۔ نعومی اب اپنے خاندان کے تمام مردوں سے محروم ہو چکی ہے جو قدیم دور میں ایک انتہائی مشکل سماجی اور معاشی صورتحال تھی۔

Ruth 1:6

Verse: Then she arose with her daughters in law that she might return from the country of Moab for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread

  • English Explanation: Upon hearing that the famine in Judah had ended and God had provided food for His people, Naomi decides to return to her homeland, Bethlehem.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہ سننے پر کہ یہوداہ میں کال ختم ہو گیا ہے اور خدا نے اپنے لوگوں کو خوراک فراہم کی ہے نعومی نے اپنے وطن بیت اللحم واپس جانے کا فیصلہ کیا۔

Ruth 1:7

Verse: Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was and her two daughters in law with her and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah

  • English Explanation: Naomi begins her journey back to Judah, accompanied by Orpah and Ruth. This marks the physical transition from their life in Moab toward an uncertain future.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے اورپاہ اور روتھ کے ساتھ یہوداہ کی طرف واپسی کا سفر شروع کیا۔ یہ موآب کی زندگی سے ایک غیر یقینی مستقبل کی طرف منتقلی کا آغاز تھا۔

Ruth 1:8

Verse: And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law Go return each to her mother’s house the LORD deal kindly with you as ye have dealt with the dead and with me

  • English Explanation: Realizing the hardship they might face as foreigners in Judah, Naomi selflessly urges her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab and find security in their own families.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہوداہ میں غیر ملکیوں کے طور پر درپیش مشکلات کا احساس کرتے ہوئے نعومی بے غرضی سے اپنی بہوؤں کو موآب میں رہنے اور اپنے خاندانوں میں پناہ لینے کا مشورہ دیتی ہے۔

Ruth 1:9

Verse: The LORD grant you that ye may find rest each of you in the house of her husband Then she kissed them and they lifted up their voice and wept

  • English Explanation: Naomi prays for them to find new husbands and security. The emotional bond between them is evident as they weep at the thought of parting.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی ان کے لیے نئے شوہروں اور تحفظ کی دعا کرتی ہے۔ ان کے درمیان جذباتی تعلق اس وقت واضح ہوتا ہے جب وہ جدائی کے خیال پر رو پڑتی ہیں۔

Ruth 1:10

Verse: And they said unto her Surely we will return with thee unto thy people

  • English Explanation: Initially, both Orpah and Ruth refuse to leave Naomi, expressing deep loyalty and a desire to stay with her despite the challenges.

  • Urdu Explanation: شروع میں اورپاہ اور روتھ دونوں نے نعومی کو چھوڑنے سے انکار کر دیا اور مشکلات کے باوجود اس کے ساتھ رہنے کی خواہش اور وفاداری کا اظہار کیا۔

Ruth 1:11-13

Verse: And Naomi said Turn again my daughters… for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me

  • English Explanation: Naomi reasons with them, explaining she has no more sons for them to marry. She views her bitter circumstances as a sign that God’s hand is against her, and she wants to spare them from her perceived “bad luck.”

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی انہیں سمجھاتی ہے کہ اس کے پاس اب مزید بیٹے نہیں ہیں جن سے وہ شادی کر سکیں۔ وہ اپنی تلخ حالت کو اس بات کی علامت سمجھتی ہے کہ خدا کا ہاتھ اس کے خلاف ہے اور وہ انہیں اپنی اس “بدقسمتی” سے بچانا چاہتی ہے۔

Ruth 1:14

Verse: And they lifted up their voice and wept again and Orpah kissed her mother in law but Ruth clave unto her

  • English Explanation: Orpah eventually decides to return to her family, but Ruth clings to Naomi, refusing to let go. This is a pivotal moment of total commitment.

  • Urdu Explanation: اورپاہ آخر کار اپنے خاندان کے پاس واپس جانے کا فیصلہ کرتی ہے لیکن روتھ نعومی کے ساتھ لپٹ جاتی ہے اور جانے سے انکار کر دیتی ہے۔ یہ مکمل وابستگی کا ایک اہم لمحہ ہے۔

Ruth 1:15

Verse: And she said Behold thy sister in law is gone back unto her people and unto her gods return thou after thy sister in law

  • English Explanation: Naomi gives Ruth one last chance to turn back, pointing out that Orpah has returned to her original culture and religion.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی روتھ کو واپس مڑنے کا ایک آخری موقع دیتی ہے اور اشارہ کرتی ہے کہ اورپاہ اپنی اصل ثقافت اور مذہب کی طرف لوٹ گئی ہے۔

Ruth 1:16-17

Verse: And Ruth said Intreat me not to leave thee… thy people shall be my people and thy God my God… if ought but death part thee and me

  • English Explanation: These famous verses contain Ruth’s vow. She chooses Naomi, the people of Israel, and the God of Israel over her own heritage, promising loyalty until death.

  • Urdu Explanation: ان مشہور آیات میں روتھ کا عہد موجود ہے۔ وہ اپنی وراثت پر نعومی، اسرائیل کے لوگوں اور اسرائیل کے خدا کو ترجیح دیتی ہے اور موت تک وفاداری کا وعدہ کرتی ہے۔

Ruth 1:18-19

Verse: When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her then she left speaking unto her… and they said Is this Naomi

  • English Explanation: Seeing Ruth’s determination, Naomi stops arguing. They arrive in Bethlehem, where the townspeople are shocked to see how much Naomi has changed after years of hardship.

  • Urdu Explanation: روتھ کا پختہ ارادہ دیکھ کر نعومی خاموش ہو گئی۔ وہ بیت اللحم پہنچتے ہیں جہاں لوگ برسوں کی مشکلات کے بعد نعومی کی بدلی ہوئی حالت دیکھ کر حیران رہ جاتے ہیں۔

Ruth 1:20-21

Verse: And she said unto them Call me not Naomi call me Mara for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me…

  • English Explanation: Naomi asks to be called “Mara” (Bitter) instead of “Naomi” (Pleasant), expressing her deep grief and feeling that God has brought her home empty-handed.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے کہا کہ اسے “نعومی” (خوشگوار) کے بجائے “مارہ” (تلخ) پکارا جائے کیونکہ وہ محسوس کرتی ہے کہ اس کا دکھ بہت گہرا ہے اور خدا نے اسے خالی ہاتھ واپس لایا ہے۔

Ruth 1:22

Verse: So Naomi returned and Ruth the Moabitess… and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest

  • English Explanation: They arrive at the perfect time—the harvest season. This provides a glimmer of hope for their survival and sets the stage for the next chapter.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ بالکل صحیح وقت پر پہنچے یعنی فصل کی کٹائی کے موسم میں۔ یہ ان کی بقا کے لیے امید کی ایک کرن فراہم کرتا ہے اور اگلے باب کے لیے راستہ ہموار کرتا ہے۔

Ruth 2:1

Verse: And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s a mighty man of wealth of the family of Elimelech and his name was Boaz

  • English Explanation: We are introduced to Boaz, a wealthy and influential relative of Naomi’s late husband, who will play a crucial role in their redemption.

  • Urdu Explanation: یہاں ہمارا تعارف بوعز سے کرایا گیا ہے جو نعومی کے مرحوم شوہر کا ایک امیر اور بااثر رشتہ دار ہے اور ان کی نجات میں اہم کردار ادا کرے گا۔

Ruth 2:2

Verse: And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi Let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn…

  • English Explanation: Ruth takes initiative to provide for herself and Naomi by gleaning (picking up leftover grain), a right given to the poor in Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation: روتھ نے اپنے اور نعومی کے لیے خوراک فراہم کرنے کی پہل کی اور کھیتوں میں جا کر خوشہ چینی (بچی ہوئی اناج جمع کرنا) کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا جو اسرائیل میں غریبوں کا حق تھا۔

Ruth 2:3

Verse: And she went and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz…

  • English Explanation: By “chance” (divine providence), Ruth ends up working in the field of Boaz, the very relative who can help them.

  • Urdu Explanation: “اتفاق” سے (جو کہ دراصل خدا کی حکمت تھی) روتھ بوعز کے کھیت میں کام کرنے لگی جو وہی رشتہ دار تھا جو ان کی مدد کر سکتا تھا۔

Ruth 2:4-5

Verse: And behold Boaz came from Bethlehem… Then said Boaz unto his servant… Whose damsel is this

  • English Explanation: Boaz arrives and shows his character by blessing his workers. He immediately notices Ruth and inquires about her identity.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز آتا ہے اور اپنے کام کرنے والوں کو دعا دے کر اپنے اچھے کردار کا ثبوت دیتا ہے۔ وہ فوراً روتھ کو دیکھتا ہے اور اس کی پہچان کے بارے میں پوچھتا ہے۔

Ruth 2:6-7

Verse: And the servant… answered and said It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi… and she came and hath continued even from the morning until now…

  • English Explanation: The foreman explains that Ruth is the Moabitess who returned with Naomi and praises her for her hard work and persistence since the morning.

  • Urdu Explanation: نگران بتاتا ہے کہ یہ وہی موآبی لڑکی ہے جو نعومی کے ساتھ واپس آئی ہے اور وہ صبح سے اس کی سخت محنت اور مستقل مزاجی کی تعریف کرتا ہے۔
