Verse-by-Verse Commentary: Ruth 2:8 – 3:8

Ruth 2:8

Verse: Then said Boaz unto Ruth Hearest thou not my daughter? Go not to glean in another field neither go from hence but abide here fast by my maidens

  • English Explanation: Boaz shows immediate fatherly protection and generosity. By calling her “my daughter,” he establishes a protective relationship, ensuring she stays within his safe and abundant boundaries rather than wandering into potentially dangerous territory.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز رُوت سے کہتا ہے کہ وہ کسی دوسرے کھیت میں نہ جائے بلکہ اُسی کے کھیت میں اس کی خادماؤں کے ساتھ رہے۔ یہ بوعز کی طرف سے رُوت کے لیے تحفظ اور ہمدردی کا پہلا قدم تھا۔

Ruth 2:9

Verse: Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap and go thou after them have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst go unto the vessels and drink of that which the young men have drawn

  • English Explanation: Boaz ensures Ruth’s safety and physical needs. He commands his workers not to harass her and grants her access to the water drawn for his employees, a significant favor for a foreigner and a gleaner.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز رُوت کو اطمینان دلاتا ہے کہ اس نے جوانوں کو اسے تنگ کرنے سے منع کر دیا ہے اور اسے پیاس لگنے کی صورت میں پانی پینے کی اجازت بھی دی جو کہ ایک بڑی مہربانی تھی۔

Ruth 2:10

Verse: Then she fell on her face and bowed herself to the ground and said unto him Why have I found grace in thine eyes that thou shouldest take knowledge of me seeing I am a stranger?

  • English Explanation: Ruth reacts with deep humility. She acknowledges her status as a “stranger” (foreigner) and is overwhelmed by the “grace” shown to her, highlighting the theme of unmerited favor.

  • Urdu Explanation: رُوت عاجزی کے ساتھ بوعز کا شکریہ ادا کرتی ہے اور حیران ہوتی ہے کہ ایک پردیسی ہونے کے باوجود اسے اتنی عزت اور مہربانی کیوں مل رہی ہے۔

Ruth 2:11

Verse: And Boaz answered and said unto her It hath fully been shewed me all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother and the land of thy nativity and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore

  • English Explanation: Boaz explains his kindness is a response to Ruth’s reputation. He highlights her sacrificial love for Naomi and her courage in leaving her homeland to follow the God of Israel.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز رُوت کو بتاتا ہے کہ اسے معلوم ہے کہ اس نے اپنی ساس کے ساتھ کتنا اچھا سلوک کیا اور اپنے وطن کو چھوڑ کر اسرائیل کے لوگوں میں شامل ہونا کتنا بڑا فیصلہ تھا۔

Ruth 2:12

Verse: The LORD recompense thy work and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel under whose wings thou art come to trust

  • English Explanation: This is a pivotal blessing. Boaz identifies Ruth as one seeking refuge under the “wings” of God. It emphasizes that while Boaz provides the physical field, God provides the spiritual reward.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز رُوت کو دعا دیتا ہے کہ خدا اس کی نیکیوں کا بدلہ دے کیونکہ اس نے اسرائیل کے خدا کے پروں کے نیچے پناہ لی ہے۔

Ruth 2:13

Verse: Then she said Let me find favour in thy sight my lord for that thou hast comforted me and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens

  • English Explanation: Ruth accepts the comfort, acknowledging that although she doesn’t hold the status of his regular servants, his words have healed her spirit.

  • Urdu Explanation: رُوت بوعز کی تسلی بخش باتوں کا شکریہ ادا کرتی ہے اور کہتی ہے کہ اس کے کلام سے اس کے دل کو سکون ملا ہے۔

Ruth 2:14

Verse: And Boaz said unto her At mealtime come thou hither and eat of the bread and dip thy morsel in the vinegar And she sat beside the reapers and he reached her parched corn and she did eat and was sufficed and left

  • English Explanation: Boaz invites her to his table. Feeding her “parched corn” until she was “sufficed” (satisfied) symbolizes God’s abundant provision that goes beyond basic survival.

  • Urdu Explanation: کھانے کے وقت بوعز نے اسے اپنے ساتھ کھانے کی دعوت دی اور اسے اتنا کھانا دیا کہ وہ سیر ہو گئی اور اس نے بچا ہوا کھانا اپنی ساس کے لیے رکھ لیا۔

Ruth 2:15

Verse: And when she was risen up to glean Boaz commanded his young men saying Let her glean even among the sheaves and reproach her not

  • English Explanation: Boaz breaks the standard rules of gleaning by allowing her to gather grain even from the “sheaves” (bundles), ensuring she doesn’t face embarrassment or rebukes.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے اپنے کارکنوں کو حکم دیا کہ وہ رُوت کو گٹھوں کے درمیان سے بھی چننے دیں اور اسے بالکل نہ ٹوکیں۔

Ruth 2:16

Verse: And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her and leave them that she may glean them and rebuke her not

  • English Explanation: This is “intentional kindness.” Boaz tells his workers to drop extra grain on purpose for her. It shows how God provides for us through the hands of others without making us feel like beggars.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز نے حکم دیا کہ جان بوجھ کر کچھ اناج رُوت کے لیے چھوڑ دیا جائے تاکہ وہ اسے آسانی سے جمع کر سکے اور کوئی اسے ملامت نہ کرے۔

Ruth 2:17

Verse: So she gleaned in the field until even and beat out that she had gleaned and it was about an ephah of barley

  • English Explanation: Ruth’s hard work results in an “ephah” of barley (about 30-50 lbs). This was an extraordinary amount for a single day’s gleaning, proving the success of Boaz’s hidden generosity.

  • Urdu Explanation: رُوت نے شام تک محنت کی اور تقریباً ایک ایفہ جو (جو کہ ایک بڑی مقدار ہے) جمع کر لیا۔

Ruth 2:18

Verse: And she took it up and went into the city and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned and she brought forth and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed

  • English Explanation: Ruth returns home and shares not only the raw grain but also the leftover cooked food from her lunch with Boaz. This shows her continued devotion to Naomi.

  • Urdu Explanation: وہ سارا اناج اور اپنا بچا ہوا کھانا لے کر اپنی ساس کے پاس آئی۔ نعومی یہ سب دیکھ کر حیران رہ گئی۔

Ruth 2:19

Verse: And her mother in law said unto her Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought and said The man’s name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz

  • English Explanation: Naomi immediately recognizes that such a large amount of grain must be a result of someone’s favor. When Ruth mentions Boaz, the connection to their family history is made.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے پوچھا کہ آج اس نے کہاں کام کیا؟ جب رُوت نے بوعز کا نام لیا تو نعومی کو خدا کی قدرت کا احساس ہوا۔

Ruth 2:20

Verse: And Naomi said unto her daughter in law Blessed be he of the LORD who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead And Naomi said unto her The man is near of kin unto us one of our next kinsmen

  • English Explanation: Naomi reveals that Boaz is a “kinsman,” someone with the legal right and responsibility to redeem their family line and property. This is the first mention of the “Kinsman-Redeemer” concept.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے بتایا کہ بوعز ان کا قریبی رشتہ دار ہے اور وہی ان کا “چھڑانے والا” یعنی وارث بن سکتا ہے۔

Ruth 2:21

Verse: And Ruth the Moabitess said He said unto me also Thou shalt keep fast by my young men until they have ended all my harvest

  • English Explanation: Ruth shares the extended offer from Boaz to stay through the entire harvest season, ensuring long-term security.

  • Urdu Explanation: رُوت نے مزید بتایا کہ بوعز نے اسے پوری فصل کٹنے تک اپنے پاس کام کرنے کی دعوت دی ہے۔

Ruth 2:22

Verse: And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law It is good my daughter that thou go out with his maidens that they meet thee not in any other field

  • English Explanation: Naomi wisely agrees, knowing that Boaz’s field is a place of safety and divine appointment.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے اسے مشورہ دیا کہ وہ بوعز ہی کے کھیت میں رہے تاکہ وہ دوسرے کھیتوں میں کسی خطرے کا شکار نہ ہو۔

Ruth 2:23

Verse: So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest and dwelt with her mother in law

  • English Explanation: Ruth remains faithful and diligent throughout both the barley and wheat harvests, continuing to care for Naomi.

  • Urdu Explanation: رُوت جو اور گیہوں کی کٹائی کے خاتمے تک بوعز کی خادماؤں کے ساتھ کام کرتی رہی اور اپنی ساس کے ساتھ ہی رہی۔

Chapter 3

Ruth 3:1

Verse: Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her My daughter shall I not seek rest for thee that it may be well with thee?

  • English Explanation: Naomi takes the initiative to seek “rest” (marriage and security) for Ruth. Her concern shifts from survival to Ruth’s future well-being.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے رُوت کی بہتری اور اس کے گھر بسانے کی فکر کرتے ہوئے اسے ایک خاص مشورہ دیا۔

Ruth 3:2

Verse: And now is not Boaz of our kindred with whose maidens thou wast? Behold he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor

  • English Explanation: Naomi points out that Boaz is their relative and is currently working at the threshing floor, creating an opportunity for a formal request for redemption.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے بتایا کہ بوعز ان کا قریبی رشتہ دار ہے اور آج رات وہ کھلیان میں جو صاف کر رہا ہوگا۔

Ruth 3:3

Verse: Wash thyself therefore and anoint thee and put thy raiment upon thee and get thee down to the floor but make not thyself known unto the man until he shall have done eating and drinking

  • English Explanation: Naomi instructs Ruth to prepare herself—not as a mourner or a worker, but as a woman seeking marriage.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے رُوت سے کہا کہ وہ تیار ہو کر بوعز کے پاس جائے لیکن جب تک وہ کھانا پینا ختم نہ کر لے، خود کو ظاہر نہ کرے۔

Ruth 3:4

Verse: And it shall be when he lieth down that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie and thou shalt go in and uncover his feet and lay thee down and he will tell thee what thou shalt do

  • English Explanation: This was a symbolic cultural act. By uncovering his feet and lying there, Ruth was asking Boaz to take her under his “skirt” (protection) as a redeemer.

  • Urdu Explanation: نعومی نے اسے ہدایت دی کہ جب بوعز سو جائے تو وہ اس کے پاؤں کی جگہ سے کپڑا ہٹا کر وہاں لیٹ جائے، پھر بوعز اسے بتائے گا کہ کیا کرنا ہے۔

Ruth 3:5

Verse: And she said unto her All that thou sayest unto me I will do

  • English Explanation: Ruth demonstrates total obedience and trust in Naomi’s wisdom, despite the boldness of the plan.

  • Urdu Explanation: رُوت نے اپنی ساس کی بات مانی اور کہا کہ وہ ویسا ہی کرے گی جیسا اسے بتایا گیا ہے۔

Ruth 3:6

Verse: And she went down unto the floor and did according to all that her mother in law bade her

  • English Explanation: Ruth follows through with the plan, showing her commitment to finding a future for her family line.

  • Urdu Explanation: رُوت کھلیان میں گئی اور اپنی ساس کے کہے کے مطابق سب کچھ کیا۔

Ruth 3:7

Verse: And when Boaz had eaten and drunk and his heart was merry he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn and she came softly and uncovered his feet and laid her down

  • English Explanation: Boaz, in a peaceful state after a hard day’s work, sleeps by his grain. Ruth approaches quietly, fulfilling the symbolic act.

  • Urdu Explanation: بوعز کھا پی کر اناج کے ڈھیر کے پاس سو گیا اور رُوت خاموشی سے جا کر اس کے پاؤں کی طرف لیٹ گئی۔

Ruth 3:8

Verse: And it came to pass at midnight that the man was afraid and turned himself and behold a woman lay at his feet

  • English Explanation: At midnight, Boaz is startled awake to find a woman at his feet, leading to the moment where the request for redemption is officially made.

  • Urdu Explanation: آدھی رات کو جب بوعز کی آنکھ کھلی تو وہ یہ دیکھ کر حیران رہ گیا کہ ایک عورت اس کے پاؤں کے پاس لیٹی ہوئی ہے۔
