English Explanation of Exodus 2:10
“And the child grew”
The verse begins with the simple statement that “the child grew.” Moses did not remain a helpless infant. His life continued despite the danger surrounding him.
The previous events show that his preservation was extraordinary. Pharaoh had commanded the death of Hebrew boys, yet Moses was protected. His mother acted courageously by placing him in a basket on the Nile, and Pharaoh’s daughter found him.
The statement that Moses grew also connects the verse with the earlier part of the story, where Moses’ own mother was temporarily able to care for him. His sister had watched over him, and Pharaoh’s daughter had accepted a Hebrew woman to nurse the child.
The survival and growth of Moses became an important part of God’s larger purpose for Israel.
“And she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter”
After Moses had grown, he was brought to Pharaoh’s daughter. The verse therefore marks a transition in his childhood.
Moses was no longer simply the Hebrew baby rescued from the river. He was now being brought into the household of Pharaoh’s daughter. This was a remarkable change in circumstances.
The child who had been threatened because he was a Hebrew male was now being raised within the royal family of Egypt.
This part of the story demonstrates how circumstances that appear dangerous or hopeless can become part of a much larger purpose. Moses’ position in Pharaoh’s household would later give him a unique connection to both the Hebrew people and the Egyptian royal environment.
“And he became her son”
Pharaoh’s daughter adopted Moses, and he “became her son.”
This statement is significant because Moses’ identity was connected to two different worlds. By birth, he was a Hebrew. By adoption, he became part of Pharaoh’s household.
That background would become important later in his life. Moses would eventually identify himself with the suffering Hebrew people rather than remaining permanently within the privileges of the Egyptian royal environment.
The verse therefore introduces an important part of Moses’ identity: he was raised in circumstances of privilege while belonging by birth to the oppressed Hebrew people.
“And she called his name Moses”
The verse next explains the origin of Moses’ name.
Pharaoh’s daughter called him Moses. The name is connected in the verse with the circumstances of his rescue from the water.
Names in biblical narratives can carry significant meaning, and the name Moses becomes closely associated with the dramatic beginning of his life.
His name would eventually become known throughout the biblical story because Moses became the central human leader in the Exodus from Egypt.
“Because I drew him out of the water”
The final words explain why Pharaoh’s daughter gave him the name Moses:
“Because I drew him out of the water.”
The reference is directly connected with the Nile River, where the baby had been placed for protection.
Water, which could have represented danger for the child, became the setting of his rescue. Moses was drawn out of the water and brought into safety.
This is one of the most memorable details of his early life. The same child who was supposed to be destroyed under Pharaoh’s command was instead rescued in circumstances connected to Pharaoh’s own household.

Moses was born a Hebrew but raised in Pharaoh’s household. His unusual upbringing gave him experience with Egyptian society while retaining his connection to his Hebrew heritage.
4. A name can preserve an important memory
The name Moses was connected with the event of his rescue. Every time his name was spoken, it could remind people of how he had been drawn out of the water.
5. The beginning of Moses’ story points toward his future mission
At this point in Exodus, Moses is only a child. The reader does not yet see the full role he will play. Later, however, Moses becomes the leader who confronts Pharaoh and leads the Israelites out of Egypt.
The story therefore begins with a rescued child and eventually develops into the story of a great deliverance.

“And the child grew” — بچہ بڑا ہوا
آیت کا آغاز ان الفاظ سے ہوتا ہے کہ “بچہ بڑا ہوا۔”
موسیٰ کی پیدائش ایسے وقت میں ہوئی تھی جب عبرانی بچوں کے لیے بہت بڑا خطرہ موجود تھا۔ فرعون نے عبرانی لڑکوں کو ہلاک کرنے کا حکم دیا تھا۔ اس خطرناک صورتحال میں موسیٰ کی زندگی محفوظ رہی۔
موسیٰ کی والدہ نے اسے ایک ٹوکری میں رکھا اور دریائے نیل کے کنارے سرکنڈوں میں چھوڑ دیا۔ اس کی بہن دور کھڑی ہو کر دیکھتی رہی کہ بچے کے ساتھ کیا ہوتا ہے۔
موسیٰ کا زندہ رہنا اور پھر اس کا بڑا ہونا اس واقعے کا اہم حصہ ہے۔ جس بچے کے لیے موت کا حکم دیا گیا تھا، وہ محفوظ رہا اور آگے چل کر اسرائیل کی تاریخ کی ایک مرکزی شخصیت بن گیا۔
“She brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter” — اسے فرعون کی بیٹی کے پاس لایا گیا
جب موسیٰ بڑا ہوا تو اسے فرعون کی بیٹی کے پاس لایا گیا۔
یہ ایک غیر معمولی صورتحال تھی۔ موسیٰ پیدائشی طور پر عبرانی تھا، لیکن اب وہ مصر کے شاہی خاندان کے قریب پرورش پانے والا تھا۔

آیت کا آخری حصہ موسیٰ کے نام کی وجہ بیان کرتا ہے:
“کیونکہ میں نے اسے پانی میں سے نکالا۔”
موسیٰ کو دریائے نیل سے نکالا گیا تھا۔ پانی اس وقت اس کے لیے خطرے کا مقام بھی بن سکتا تھا، لیکن اسی پانی کے درمیان سے اس کی زندگی محفوظ ہوئی۔
یہ واقعہ موسیٰ کی پوری زندگی کے آغاز میں ایک اہم علامت بن جاتا ہے۔ ایک ایسا بچہ جسے فرعون کے حکم کے باعث خطرہ تھا، وہ اسی فرعون کے خاندان سے تعلق رکھنے والی عورت کے ذریعے محفوظ ہوا۔
اس آیت کا مرکزی پیغام
خروج 2:10 موسیٰ کی زندگی کے ایک ایسے موڑ کو بیان کرتی ہے جہاں اس کی شناخت، اس کا نام، اس کا بچپن اور اس کے مستقبل کی کہانی ایک دوسرے سے جڑ جاتے ہیں۔
