Detailed Explanation in English

Exodus 2:15 marks a pivotal turning point in the life of Moses, transitioning him from the royal courts of Egypt to the solitude of the Arabian desert. To fully grasp the theological and historical weight of this single verse, one must look at its historical context, the psychological state of Moses, and the divine providence unfolding behind the scenes.

1. “Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses.”

Prior to this event, Moses had taken matters into his own hands by killing an Egyptian taskmaster who was beating a Hebrew slave. Although Moses was raised as royalty within Pharaoh’s household, his intervention exposed his true allegiance to his biological Hebrew people. When the affair became known, Pharaoh viewed Moses’ action not merely as murder, but as an act of treason against the Egyptian state.

Under Egyptian law, royal privilege did not exempt an individual from high treason, especially when it signaled a potential uprising among the massive Hebrew labor force. Pharaoh’s determination to execute Moses reveals the total breakdown of Moses’ position in Egypt. Stripped of his prince status, wealth, and safety, Moses faced immediate mortal danger.

2. “But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian…”

Fleeing Pharaoh was no simple task. Egypt had fortresses and military outposts along its eastern border (the “Ways of Shur”). Moses had to navigate treacherous desert terrain to escape Egyptian jurisdiction. His destination was Midian, a region located in the northwestern Arabian Peninsula, east of the Gulf of Aqaba.

The Midianites were descendants of Midian, a son of Abraham through his second wife, Keturah (Genesis 25:1–2). Though distant relatives of the Hebrews, they were nomadic pastoralists living in the arid wilderness.

This transition represents a profound spiritual and personal reduction:

  • From Palace to Wilderness: Moses went from eating royal delicacies to seeking basic survival in harsh, barren lands.

  • From Prince to Fugitive: His identity as an Egyptian leader was completely erased.

  • A Period of Refining: God used the land of Midian as a preparation ground. For forty years, Moses learned patience, humility, and desert navigation—skills essential for eventually leading the Israelites out of Egypt.

3. “…and he sat down by a well.”

In ancient Near Eastern literature, wells were vital gathering points for life, community, and providence. Sitting by a well symbolizes exhaustion, waiting, and openness to divine intervention.

Physically, Moses was exhausted from his long trek across the Sinai Peninsula. Emotionally and spiritually, he was defeated; his attempt to deliver his people by human force had failed, leaving him isolated and homeless. Yet, the well became the exact location where God began the next chapter of his life. It was at this well that Moses met the daughters of Reuel (Jethro), leading to his employment, marriage to Zipporah, and entry into the family that would support him during his wilderness years.

Core Theological Insights

  • Human Effort vs. Divine Timing: Moses attempted to deliver Israel forty years too early using human violence. God had to strip away his self-reliance before using him as a humble instrument.

  • The Wilderness as Preparation: Great leaders in Scripture are often forged in obscurity and isolation before stepping into public ministry.

  • God’s Overruling Providence: Even when human plans collapse and fear forces a retreat, God uses those moments to position His servants exactly where they need to be.
