Detailed Commentary & Explanation (English)

Historical and Biblical Context

The event recorded in Exodus 2:2 occurs during one of the most oppressive periods in the history of the Hebrew people. The Israelites were living in Egypt under a ruthless Pharaoh who feared their growing numbers. In an attempt to weaken the Hebrew population, Pharaoh issued a royal decree ordering that every newborn Hebrew boy be thrown into the Nile River (Exodus 1:22).

It was into this atmosphere of terror, genocide, and intense persecution that a Levite couple—Amram and Jochebed—conceived and brought a child into the world. That child would grow up to be Moses, the great deliverer chosen by God.

Clause-by-Clause Exegesis

1. “And the woman conceived, and bare a son…”

This phrase illustrates that life continues even in times of extreme political and physical oppression. Jochebed’s pregnancy was not an accident; it was part of God’s sovereign timeline to raise up a champion for His people. Despite the life-threatening law forbidding male infants to live, God entrusted this child to faithful parents.

2. “…and when she saw him that he was a goodly child…”

The word “goodly” comes from the Hebrew word Tov (ט֥וֹב), which translates to fine, beautiful, pleasant, or proper. New Testament authors reflect on this event as well:

  • Acts 7:20 describes Moses as being “exceeding fair” (or fair to God).

  • Hebrews 11:23 notes that his parents saw he was a “proper child” and were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

This observation went beyond ordinary maternal affection. Jochebed recognized a unique divine presence and purpose resting upon her infant. She perceived that God had a distinct calling for this child, prompting her to defy human decrees in favor of divine duty.

3. “…she hid him three months.”

Hiding a newborn infant for three months required tremendous bravery, ingenuity, and unwavering faith. In an environment where Egyptian spies or informants could report any crying baby, preserving his life was an act of daily peril.

This three-month period marks a profound act of spiritual resistance. Jochebed’s actions demonstrate that when human laws directly contradict the sanctity of life and the command of God, believers are called to obey God rather than men.

(Urdu)
