“When she could not longer hide him”
This opening phrase describes a moment of great danger and difficult decision-making. Moses’ mother had protected her baby as long as she could, but eventually concealment was no longer possible.
The verse does not portray her as simply giving up. Instead, she takes practical action. She prepares a container capable of protecting the child and places him where he may be discovered.
This can be understood as an example of courage under extremely difficult circumstances. She could not control the political situation or Pharaoh’s command, but she could make a careful decision concerning her child.
“She took for him an ark of bulrushes”
The word “ark” is particularly interesting. In this context, it refers to a basket or chest made from papyrus or reeds. Several modern Bible translations render the expression as “papyrus basket.” The Hebrew term can also be translated “ark,” connecting the word with the ark described in Genesis.
The basket was not a large ship. It was a small container designed to keep the baby protected. The use of reeds or papyrus was appropriate to the environment around the Nile.
The image is therefore one of a mother carefully constructing a small protective vessel for her infant.
“Daubed it with slime and with pitch”
The basket needed to be made resistant to water. The KJV uses the words “slime” and “pitch.” Other translations use terms such as bitumen, tar, or asphalt. The basic idea is that the basket was sealed so that water would not easily enter it.
This detail is important because it shows preparation rather than carelessness. Moses’ mother did not simply place her baby in an ordinary basket. She made the basket suitable for the dangerous environment in which it would be placed.

“And put the child therein”

“She laid it in the flags by the river’s brink”
The “flags” refer to reeds or vegetation growing near the river. Modern translations commonly describe the location as the reeds along the bank of the Nile.
The location is significant. Moses was not simply abandoned in the middle of the river. He was placed among the reeds near the riverbank, where the basket could be concealed and where it could potentially be noticed.
The next verses confirm the importance of this location. Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the river, saw the ark among the reeds, and sent her maid to retrieve it. When she opened it, she saw the crying child and had compassion on him.
Spiritual Meaning of Exodus 2:3
Exodus 2:3 contains several themes that are important for Bible study.
First, courage in difficult circumstances. Moses’ mother faced a situation she could not solve through ordinary means. Nevertheless, she acted carefully and courageously.
Second, protection. The basket represents a practical means of protecting a vulnerable child. The waterproof coating shows that careful preparation accompanied her decision.
Third, trust. Once Moses was placed in the basket, his mother could no longer personally control everything that happened to him. The story demonstrates the tension between human responsibility and trust in God’s providence.
Fourth, unexpected deliverance. The child placed in danger near the Nile would ultimately be rescued through the very circumstances surrounding the river. Pharaoh’s daughter discovered him, and the events that followed allowed Moses to survive.
