She did not simply walk away after the basket was placed in the reeds. Instead, she remained nearby and watched.

Who was Moses’ sister?
The verse itself does not give her name. Later biblical passages identify Moses’ sister as Miriam. Numbers 26:59 names Miriam together with Aaron and Moses, while Exodus 15:20 describes Miriam as a prophetess and the sister of Aaron.
Therefore, Christian and Jewish biblical interpretation commonly identifies the sister in Exodus 2:4 with Miriam.
The exact age of Miriam is not stated in Exodus 2:4. Some traditional commentaries propose different ages, but those estimates should not be treated as explicit biblical information. What the text clearly shows is that she was capable of watching the situation and, shortly afterward, speaking directly with Pharaoh’s daughter.
Why did she stand at a distance?
The immediate purpose was observation.
Moses’ family did not know what would happen after the baby was placed in the basket. Would someone discover him? Would the person who found him help him? Would he be taken away? Would he survive?
Miriam waited to find out.
This makes the verse particularly powerful because it captures a moment of uncertainty. The family had taken the action available to them, but the outcome was still unknown.
Miriam’s position allowed her to remain attentive without immediately exposing herself. The next verse explains that Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the river, saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to retrieve it. When the basket was opened, the child was discovered.

“To wit” — what does it mean?
The phrase “to wit” is old English. In this context, it does not mean “to speak” or “to tell.” It means “to know” or “to find out.”
Consequently, the KJV sentence can be understood in modern English as:
“His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him.”
Several translations use almost exactly this meaning. The NIV says she stood at a distance “to see what would happen to him,” while the NASB renders the idea as standing at a distance “to find out what would happen to him.”
A lesson about faithful concern
One important lesson from this verse is the value of attentive care.
Miriam could not control the entire situation. She could not determine who would discover Moses or what decision that person would make. Nevertheless, she did what she could: she remained watchful.
This is different from simply worrying. Miriam’s concern was accompanied by attention and readiness. When the opportunity came, she was able to respond.
The next part of the narrative demonstrates this. After Pharaoh’s daughter discovered Moses, Miriam approached and asked whether she should call a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. This led to Moses being cared for by his own mother for a period of time.
Thus, Exodus 2:4 serves as a bridge between the desperate action of Moses’ mother and the unexpected development that follows.
The larger message
Exodus 2:4 can also be read as part of the larger biblical theme of God working through circumstances that initially appear uncertain.
At the moment described by the verse, Moses is simply a vulnerable child in a basket. Yet the wider book of Exodus eventually presents Moses as the central human leader through whom the Israelites are brought out of Egyptian slavery.
The verse itself does not explain all of that future history. Its immediate focus is much smaller: a sister watching a baby.
