English Explanation of Exodus 3:16

1. “Go and gather the elders of Israel together”

God first tells Moses to gather the elders of Israel. The elders represented the people and held positions of respect within the community. Moses was therefore given a message that was intended to be communicated publicly and responsibly.

This instruction also shows that God’s work of deliverance would involve the community. Moses would be the person chosen to lead the mission, but the people themselves needed to hear and understand what God was doing.

For Moses, this was an important responsibility. He had spent many years away from Egypt, and now he was being asked to return and speak to people who might have questions about his authority and his message. God therefore gave Moses clear instructions about whom to approach first.

2. “The LORD God of your fathers”

God tells Moses to introduce Him as the God of the fathers of Israel. This expression connects the present generation with its history.

Israel’s story was built around the relationship God had established with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. By reminding the people of their ancestors, Moses could explain that the message he was bringing was not a completely new religious idea. It concerned the God whom their ancestors had worshipped and trusted.

This is significant because suffering can sometimes cause people to wonder whether God remembers them. The verse answers that concern by pointing backward to the continuing relationship between God and His people.

3. “The God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob”

The three names—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—are especially meaningful.

Abraham was the patriarch with whom God established important promises concerning his descendants. Isaac was Abraham’s son, and Jacob was Isaac’s son, whose descendants became the tribes of Israel.

When God identifies Himself through these three generations, He emphasizes continuity. The people living in Egypt were part of the family and covenant history associated with these patriarchs.

This statement also shows that God’s purposes can extend across generations. What God promised to one generation could have significance for generations that came afterward.

4. “Appeared unto me”

God tells Moses that He had appeared to him. This refers to the encounter Moses experienced at the burning bush in the wilderness.

Moses had been living a very different life before this encounter. He was no longer living as a prince in Egypt. He had become a shepherd in Midian. Yet God called him and gave him a mission.

The appearance of God to Moses became the foundation of Moses’ authority to return to Egypt. Moses was not acting merely according to his own plan. He was responding to a divine calling.

5. “I have surely visited you”

The word “visited” in this context carries the sense of God turning His attention toward His people and acting on their behalf. It does not mean that God had been unaware of them and suddenly discovered them.

The statement expresses divine attention, care, and intervention.

The Israelites had endured oppression in Egypt for a long period. Their circumstances may have made it seem as though nothing was changing. Yet this verse declares that God had not abandoned them.

The phrase therefore provides hope: God sees His people, remembers His purposes, and can act at the appropriate time.

6. “And seen that which is done to you in Egypt”

This final part of the verse directly addresses the suffering of the Israelites.

God tells Moses that He has seen what was being done to them in Egypt. Their hardship was known to Him. Their situation was not hidden from His sight.

This idea is central to the surrounding passage. Exodus presents God as hearing the cries of His people, remembering His covenant, seeing their suffering, and preparing to deliver them.

The verse therefore communicates both awareness and action. God sees the circumstances of His people, and the message given to Moses indicates that a major change is approaching.

Main Lessons from Exodus 3:16

God remembers His promises

One of the central lessons of this verse is that God’s purposes are not limited to one generation. The reference to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob reminds Israel of the promises associated with their history.

God sees suffering

The statement that God had “seen that which is done” to Israel demonstrates that their suffering was known to Him. The verse offers an important biblical theme: human suffering does not mean that God is unaware of what is happening.

God works through people

God chose Moses to deliver His message. Although God was the source of the mission, Moses had a responsibility to communicate that message faithfully.

Leadership requires communication

Moses was specifically instructed to gather the elders and speak to them. This demonstrates the importance of communicating clearly with responsible leaders when a community is facing major change.

God’s work can unfold over generations

The reference to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob shows that biblical history often presents God’s purposes as extending beyond the lifetime of one person. Moses was entering a story that had begun generations before him.

God”

God”
