Detailed Explanation in English

1. Moses Took His Wife and His Sons

The verse begins by saying that Moses took his wife and his sons with him. Moses had established a family during his years in Midian, and now his calling from God affected not only his personal direction but also his household.

This detail reminds us that God’s calling can involve major changes in a person’s circumstances. Moses had spent many years away from Egypt. He had become accustomed to life in Midian, but God instructed him to return to Egypt.

Moses did not simply remain where life was familiar and comfortable. He responded to the command he had received from God and began the journey toward his new responsibility.

The presence of his family also emphasizes that Moses was a husband and father while carrying out his calling. His great mission did not erase his family responsibilities. Instead, his family became part of the journey.

2. He Returned to the Land of Egypt

The phrase “he returned to the land of Egypt” is central to the verse. Moses had originally fled Egypt after an incident in which he killed an Egyptian who was mistreating a Hebrew. Afterward, Moses lived in Midian for many years.

Returning to Egypt therefore meant returning to a place connected with his past. Yet God had specifically instructed him to go back.

Moses’ return demonstrates obedience. He was not returning because Egypt had suddenly become an easy or comfortable place. He was returning because God had given him a mission.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: obedience does not always mean choosing the easiest path. Sometimes obedience requires a person to leave familiarity and move toward a difficult responsibility.

Moses was going back to Egypt because God had a purpose for him there. He would eventually stand before Pharaoh and deliver God’s message concerning the Israelites.

3. Moses Took the Rod of God in His Hand

The final part of the verse says that Moses took “the rod of God” in his hand.

This rod had previously been described simply as the rod Moses possessed. God had used it as part of the signs He showed Moses. When Moses threw it down, it became a serpent, and when he took it again, it became a rod.

The rod therefore became a visible reminder of God’s calling and power.

The expression “rod of God” does not mean that the physical object possessed supernatural power independently. The important point was that God had chosen to use the rod as an instrument through which His signs would be demonstrated.

This is an important distinction. The authority belonged to God. Moses was the servant, and the rod was the instrument.

4. The Rod Represented God’s Authority

Moses was about to face Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, but the rod reminded him that he was not going to Egypt merely in his own strength.

God had already told Moses that He would be with him. The rod became one of the signs through which God’s authority would be displayed.

Moses would later stretch out the rod over the waters, and God would use it in the great events surrounding Israel’s deliverance.

The lesson is that God’s servants are called to depend upon God’s authority rather than their own ability. Moses had previously expressed fear and uncertainty about his ability to speak and lead. Yet God continued to assure him that He would work through him.

5. Obedience After Fear

The wider passage shows that Moses had raised several objections when God first called him. He questioned whether the Israelites would believe him and expressed concern about his ability to speak.

Nevertheless, Exodus 4:20 shows movement from conversation to action.

Moses now takes his family and begins traveling toward Egypt.

This is significant because faith is not only about hearing a command; it also involves responding to it. Moses’ journey demonstrates that he eventually moved forward despite the difficulties associated with his calling.

6. A New Chapter in Moses’ Life

Exodus 4:20 marks a transition. Moses’ years in Midian were coming to an end, and his public mission was beginning.

He had once left Egypt as a man fleeing from danger. Now he was returning because God had commissioned him.

The same land that represented his past would become the starting point of his leadership over Israel.

This shows how God can bring a person into a new chapter of life. Moses could not change his past, but he could obey God’s direction for the future.

7. Spiritual Lessons from Exodus 4:20

There are several lessons that readers can draw from this verse.

First, obedience requires action. Moses did not merely hear God’s command; he began the journey.

Second, God’s calling can involve family and responsibility. Moses traveled with his wife and sons, showing that his calling existed alongside his responsibilities as a husband and father.

Third, God provides what is needed for the task. Moses carried the rod that God had designated for signs. The instrument itself was not the source of power; God was.

Fourth, courage does not mean the absence of difficulty. Moses had concerns and fears, yet he moved forward.

Fifth, God can use ordinary things for significant purposes. A shepherd’s staff became associated with extraordinary signs because God chose to use it.
