English Explanation

Exodus 4:24–26 is one of the most difficult and mysterious passages in the story of Moses. The verses occur immediately after Moses has been commanded by God to return to Egypt and lead the Israelites out of slavery. Moses has received a divine calling, witnessed the signs God gave him, and begun his journey back toward Egypt. Yet suddenly, the narrative describes a serious confrontation involving Moses, his family, and the covenant practice of circumcision.

The passage says that while Moses was on the journey, “the LORD met him, and sought to kill him.” The text does not explain every detail of the encounter, which is why this passage has received considerable attention from Bible readers and commentators. The following verses, however, provide an important clue: Zipporah immediately circumcised her son.

Circumcision was an important sign of God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants. Genesis 17 establishes circumcision as a covenant sign for Abraham’s household and future generations. Therefore, circumcision was not simply a cultural custom. It represented belonging to the covenant community and obedience to God’s command.

The apparent problem in Exodus 4 is that one of Moses’ sons had not been circumcised. The passage does not explicitly tell us why the circumcision had been delayed or whether Moses himself had neglected the responsibility. Because the narrative is brief, readers should be careful not to claim details that the text itself does not provide.

Zipporah responds decisively. She takes a sharp stone and circumcises her son. After doing so, the immediate danger passes: “And he let him go.” This statement connects the circumcision directly with the resolution of the crisis.

Zipporah’s words are also unusual: “Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.” She repeats the expression at the end of the passage, saying, “A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.” The exact meaning of her statement is debated. It may express distress, frustration, or her reaction to the bloody covenant ritual. The text does not give enough information to determine precisely what emotion she intended.

One important lesson from this passage concerns obedience to God. Moses was being sent to deliver Israel, but before he could continue his mission, an unresolved covenant matter within his own household had to be addressed. The narrative therefore places personal and family responsibility alongside public calling.

Moses’ mission was extraordinarily important, but the passage reminds readers that being called to a great task does not remove the responsibility to obey God in personal matters. Leadership does not excuse disobedience.

Another important theme is the seriousness of God’s covenant. Circumcision was the visible sign of Abraham’s covenant. Earlier in Genesis, God had commanded that every male belonging to Abraham’s household be circumcised. Exodus 4 shows that covenant obedience remained significant in the life of Moses and his family.

The passage also highlights Zipporah’s role. She acts when immediate action is necessary. Although Moses is the central figure of the Exodus story, Zipporah becomes the person who performs the circumcision and brings the crisis to an end. Her action demonstrates her involvement in the preservation of Moses’ mission.

The phrase “and he let him go” is especially important. Whatever the precise nature of the encounter, the immediate threat ends after the circumcision. The passage therefore connects covenant obedience with the restoration of the situation.

This does not mean that the Bible teaches that every difficulty is automatically caused by a specific personal sin. Rather, this particular narrative presents a specific covenant obligation within Moses’ family and shows its importance in the context of his calling.

Spiritual Lessons from Exodus 4:24–26

1. God’s commands should not be treated casually.
The passage presents covenant obedience as serious. Moses was preparing to undertake a major mission, yet an apparently neglected covenant responsibility could not simply be ignored.

2. Calling and obedience belong together.
Moses had been chosen to lead Israel, but his calling did not make obedience optional. A person can have an important responsibility and still need to examine whether he is faithfully following God’s commands.

3. Family responsibility matters.
The passage places Moses’ household directly within the story of God’s covenant. Spiritual responsibility was not limited to Moses’ public ministry.

4. God can use unexpected people in important moments.
Zipporah takes decisive action in this difficult scene. Her role reminds readers that important actions in God’s purposes are not always performed by the person who receives the main calling.

5. Difficult Bible passages require humility.
Exodus 4:24–26 does not explain every detail. It is better to distinguish what the text clearly says from interpretations that attempt to fill in the missing information.

6. Covenant identity was important to Israel.
Circumcision served as a visible sign of God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants. Its presence in the Moses narrative demonstrates the continuing importance of that covenant identity.
