English Explanation

Genesis 10 describes the generations that came after Noah’s sons following the great flood. This chapter is often called the “Table of Nations” because it records the origins and spread of different peoples and nations across the earth. The verses about Canaan provide important historical and biblical information about the groups that descended from Canaan, the son of Ham and grandson of Noah.

The verse begins with the statement that Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn and Heth. Sidon became associated with the ancient city of Sidon, one of the major cities of the Phoenician people. The city later became known for maritime trade, craftsmanship, and cultural influence throughout the ancient Near East. Heth is connected with the Hittite people, who became a powerful civilization in the ancient world.

The passage then lists several other descendants of Canaan:

The Jebusites
The Jebusites were one of the ancient inhabitants of the land of Canaan. They lived especially around Jerusalem, which was known as Jebus before it became a major city in Israelite history. Their presence shows that the land was already occupied by various nations before later biblical events.

The Amorites
The Amorites were one of the most significant peoples mentioned in the Old Testament. They were spread across different regions of the ancient Near East and were known as a powerful group. Their name appears frequently in biblical history because of their influence in the land of Canaan.

The Girgasites
The Girgasites were another Canaanite group. Although less information is available about them, they are repeatedly mentioned among the peoples living in the land of Canaan.

The Hivites
The Hivites were another branch of the Canaanite nations. They lived in different areas of Canaan and are mentioned in connection with several events involving the Israelites.

The Arkites and the Sinites
The Arkites and Sinites were groups associated with northern Canaan. They were likely connected with specific cities or regions. Their inclusion in this genealogy demonstrates the diversity of the nations that came from Canaan.

The Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites
These groups were also connected with cities and regions in the northern part of the ancient Canaanite world. The Arvadites were associated with the island city of Arvad, while the Hamathites were linked with Hamath, an important ancient city.

The final statement says that the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad. This indicates that Canaan’s descendants did not remain in one location but expanded into different territories. The verse highlights how nations developed from family lines and how human communities spread throughout the ancient world.

From a biblical perspective, this genealogy emphasizes that God is aware of the origins and histories of all nations. The passage shows that every nation has a beginning and that human history unfolds according to God’s greater plan. It also prepares the reader for later biblical accounts involving the land of Canaan and the peoples who lived there.

Genesis 10:15–18 is therefore not merely a list of names. It provides a historical framework for understanding the ancient peoples who played important roles in biblical history. It connects family ancestry, geography, and the development of nations in the generations after Noah.
