English Explanation of Genesis 16:5

“And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee”

Sarai begins by placing responsibility for her distress upon Abram. The phrase “My wrong be upon thee” expresses her accusation that Abram bears responsibility for what she is now experiencing.

Sarai had originally suggested that Abram take Hagar as a wife or partner so that she might obtain children through her. However, after Hagar became pregnant, Sarai’s feelings changed. Instead of experiencing the expected relief, she found herself in a painful situation.

Her words demonstrate an important feature of human nature: a person may make a decision willingly and later experience consequences that are much more difficult than expected. Sarai had acted because she was suffering from childlessness, but the result created tension within the household.

“I have given my maid into thy bosom”

Sarai reminds Abram that Hagar was given to him by her. She is essentially saying that she took the initiative in this arrangement.

This statement also reveals the social and family structure of the ancient world. Sarai regarded Hagar as her maid, and the arrangement was intended to provide a way for Sarai’s household to have a child.

Yet the situation became emotionally complicated once Hagar conceived. What had initially appeared to be a solution to Sarai’s problem became a source of conflict.

“And when she saw that she had conceived”

Hagar’s pregnancy changed the relationship between the women. Before becoming pregnant, Hagar occupied the position of Sarai’s servant. Once she conceived, however, the circumstances were different.

The pregnancy gave Hagar a new position within the household. Sarai perceived that Hagar’s attitude toward her had changed because of the pregnancy.

The verse does not require us to assume that every detail of Hagar’s attitude was exactly as Sarai understood it. Rather, the verse tells us how Sarai experienced the situation. She felt that she had lost respect in Hagar’s eyes.

“I was despised in her eyes”

This is the emotional center of Sarai’s complaint.

The word “despised” communicates the feeling of being looked down upon, treated with contempt, or no longer respected. Sarai, who had previously held authority over Hagar, now felt humiliated.

Her pain was intensified because the situation involved something she deeply desired: a child. The very arrangement intended to solve her sorrow had contributed to a new source of sorrow.

This part of the verse teaches us that outward circumstances do not always produce the emotional result we expect. A solution to one problem can sometimes create another problem when it is pursued without patience or when relationships are involved.

“The LORD judge between me and thee”

Sarai concludes by appealing to God’s judgment.

Rather than simply ending the argument herself, she calls upon the LORD to judge between her and Abram. This expression shows the seriousness of the disagreement. Sarai believes that God knows the truth about what happened and can determine who is responsible.

The statement also introduces an important biblical theme: human beings do not always know the complete story, but God sees the heart, motives, actions, and circumstances.

Genesis 16:5 therefore presents both emotional conflict and spiritual accountability. Sarai is distressed, Abram is placed under accusation, and the situation ultimately comes before God.

What Genesis 16:5 Teaches

Genesis 16:5 offers several important lessons.

1. Difficult decisions can have unexpected consequences.
Sarai’s decision was made because of her desire for a child, but the decision produced tension and emotional pain. The passage encourages readers to consider the long-term consequences of major decisions.

2. Human suffering can influence our reactions.
Sarai had experienced the pain of infertility for a long period. Her frustration helps explain the intensity of her reaction. Understanding someone’s pain does not necessarily mean approving every response, but it helps us recognize the emotional background of the conflict.

3. Family relationships can become complicated when expectations change.
Hagar’s pregnancy changed her position within Abram’s household. A relationship that had previously been clearly defined became more complicated.

4. Blame can increase conflict.
Sarai’s words show how quickly a painful situation can turn into mutual accusation. Instead of focusing only on the original problem, the people involved began to struggle over responsibility.

5. God is presented as the ultimate judge.
Sarai’s final appeal is significant. She calls upon God’s judgment because human beings can disagree about motives and responsibility. The biblical account repeatedly emphasizes God’s knowledge and justice.

“And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.”
