English Explanation of Genesis 22:21

Genesis 22:21 is a short genealogical verse, but it has an important place in the larger story of Genesis. It says, “Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram.” The verse identifies three of the sons of Nahor and Milcah. The surrounding passage makes this relationship clear: Abraham receives news that his brother Nahor has had children through Milcah.

1. The Family Background

To understand Genesis 22:21, it is helpful to look at the family relationships.

Abraham and Nahor were brothers. Nahor married Milcah, who was a relative within the family of Terah. Genesis 22:20–24 records information about the children born to Nahor and Milcah.

The passage lists eight sons:

  • Huz or Uz
  • Buz
  • Kemuel
  • Chesed
  • Hazo
  • Pildash
  • Jidlaph
  • Bethuel

Bethuel is particularly important because he later becomes the father of Rebekah, who becomes the wife of Isaac. Thus, this genealogy prepares the reader for the story of Isaac and Rebekah in Genesis 24.

Genesis therefore does not include these names merely as historical details. The genealogy connects different generations and helps the reader follow the family line through which important events in the biblical narrative develop.

2. “Huz His Firstborn”

The verse begins with Huz, also commonly written Uz in modern English translations. The Hebrew form is associated with the name Uz. Several English translations use “Uz,” while the KJV uses “Huz.”

The expression “his firstborn” identifies Huz as the first son of the person being discussed—Nahor. In biblical genealogies, the firstborn position could have special importance because the first son traditionally held a prominent position within the family.

The name Uz appears elsewhere in Scripture. Most famously, the book of Job begins by saying that Job lived in the land of Uz. However, identifying the Uz mentioned here with every other person or region called Uz requires caution. Scripture contains more than one occurrence of the name, and commentators have proposed different connections.

Therefore, it is reasonable to say that Genesis 22:21 identifies Uz as Nahor’s firstborn son, while avoiding claims that cannot be established with certainty from the biblical text itself.

3. “Buz His Brother”

The second person mentioned is Buz.

The wording “his brother” establishes Buz’s relationship to Huz/Uz. He was another son of Nahor and Milcah. The verse is concise because biblical genealogies frequently communicate family relationships through short phrases rather than lengthy explanations.

Buz is also mentioned elsewhere in the Old Testament. Job 32:2 identifies Elihu as “the son of Barachel the Buzite,” and this has led some interpreters to suggest a connection between Buz and the Buzites. The precise genealogical relationship, however, is not stated explicitly enough to establish every detail with certainty.

This is an important principle when studying biblical genealogies: a possible connection should be distinguished from something Scripture directly states.

4. “Kemuel the Father of Aram”

The third individual is Kemuel, described as “the father of Aram.”

Unlike Huz and Buz, Kemuel is identified by his relationship to a specific person, Aram. The Hebrew wording supports the straightforward reading “Kemuel, father of Aram.”

There is some discussion among commentators concerning which Aram is intended here. Another well-known Aram appears in Genesis 10 as a son of Shem. Consequently, interpreters have sometimes distinguished the Aram of Genesis 22:21 from the earlier Aram of Genesis 10.

Some ancient translations interpret the phrase differently and connect Aram with the Syrians or Arameans, whereas many English translations retain “Aram” as the personal name found in the Hebrew text.

The safest reading is therefore to follow the Hebrew wording and recognize Kemuel as the father of Aram without building an overly precise genealogy that the verse itself does not provide.

5. Why Is This Genealogy Important?

At first glance, Genesis 22:21 may seem like a simple list of unfamiliar names. Yet genealogies are significant throughout Genesis because they establish relationships between families and generations.

Genesis is moving toward the story of Isaac’s marriage. Immediately after this genealogy, Bethuel is mentioned as the father of Rebekah. Rebekah eventually becomes Isaac’s wife. Thus, information about Nahor’s family is strategically placed before the narrative concerning Isaac and Rebekah.

This demonstrates how biblical genealogies can function as bridges between major events. A name that initially appears unimportant may become significant later in the narrative.

6. A Lesson About Biblical Genealogies

Genesis 22:21 also reminds readers that Scripture records ordinary family history alongside major spiritual events. Abraham is the central figure of much of Genesis, but the text also preserves the names of people belonging to surrounding branches of his family.

This broader family picture helps demonstrate that God’s purposes in the biblical narrative unfold through generations. The passage is not simply about three names; it is part of a larger record connecting Abraham’s family with later generations.

For Bible study, Genesis 22:21 encourages careful attention to names, relationships, and context. Reading one verse by itself can make the passage appear insignificant. Reading it together with Genesis 22:20–24 and the later account of Rebekah reveals why the genealogy has been included.

“Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,”
