English Explanation

1. “I am a stranger”

When Abraham says, “I am a stranger,” he acknowledges that he is not a native owner of the land in which he is living. He belongs to another family line and has come into Canaan as part of God’s calling.

The word “stranger” emphasizes Abraham’s position as someone living among another people. He has relationships with the local inhabitants, but he does not claim ownership simply because he has been residing among them.

This attitude demonstrates humility. Abraham does not approach the people of the land as though everything automatically belongs to him. Instead, he respectfully explains his situation and makes a lawful request.

2. “And a sojourner with you”

sojourner is someone who resides in a place for a period of time without treating it as his permanent earthly home.

This description is important in understanding Abraham’s life. God had promised Abraham and his descendants a land, yet Abraham himself experienced much of his life as a traveler and temporary resident. His faith required him to trust God’s promise even when he did not personally possess everything that had been promised.

The phrase therefore carries both a historical and spiritual meaning. Historically, Abraham was living among the Canaanites. Spiritually, the passage illustrates the temporary nature of human life and earthly possessions.

3. “Give me a possession of a buryingplace with you”

Abraham now makes a specific request. He needs a burial place for Sarah.

The word “possession” indicates that Abraham was seeking a legally recognized piece of property. He did not merely want permission to bury Sarah temporarily. He wanted a permanent family burial place.

The following verses show that Abraham carefully negotiated the purchase of the field and cave of Machpelah. He insisted on paying the full value rather than simply accepting the property as a gift.

This demonstrates Abraham’s integrity. He wanted a clear and honorable transaction.

4. “That I may bury my dead”

Sarah was not simply “a body” to Abraham. She was his beloved wife, and her death was a deeply personal loss.

The expression “my dead” reflects the reality of death while still maintaining respect for the person who has died. Abraham’s desire was to provide Sarah with an honorable burial.

Genesis 23 therefore combines grief with responsibility. Abraham mourned Sarah, but he also took practical steps to care for her remains.

5. “Out of my sight”

This phrase should not be understood as meaning that Abraham no longer cared about Sarah. Rather, it reflects the painful reality that Sarah had died and that Abraham needed to place her body in a proper burial location.

Earlier in the chapter, Abraham mourns and weeps for Sarah. His request for a burial place comes from genuine grief and love.

The verse therefore presents a realistic picture of mourning: grief is real, but important responsibilities still have to be fulfilled.

Major Spiritual Lessons

Human life is temporary

Abraham’s description of himself as a “stranger and a sojourner” reminds readers that earthly life is temporary. People may own houses, land, possessions, and wealth, but none of these things remain with them forever.

Abraham’s attitude encourages humility. Earthly possessions should not become the foundation of a person’s identity.

Faith can exist alongside grief

Abraham was a man of faith, yet he still mourned Sarah. Scripture does not portray grief as evidence of a lack of faith.

His sorrow and his faith existed together. He trusted God while experiencing genuine human loss.

This is an important lesson for anyone facing bereavement. Faith does not require a person to pretend that death does not hurt.

Respect for the dead matters

Abraham took considerable care to secure an appropriate burial place for Sarah. The passage demonstrates the dignity with which he treated the deceased.

Burial practices differ between cultures and generations, but the underlying principle of treating the dead with respect remains significant.

Integrity in property and financial matters

Abraham could have accepted a simple gift, but he ultimately purchased the property. The transaction was publicly recognized and carefully established.

His actions demonstrate the importance of honesty and transparency when dealing with possessions and financial matters.

God’s promises may unfold over time

Abraham had received God’s promises concerning the land, but his personal experience was that of a sojourner. He did not immediately possess everything in the manner one might expect.

This teaches a broader lesson about faith: God’s promises and human circumstances do not always appear to correspond immediately. Faith involves trusting God even during periods when the fulfillment of His purposes is not yet fully visible.

“I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

“I am a stranger” — “میں اجنبی ہوں”

“And a sojourner with you” — “اور تمہارے درمیان مسافر ہوں”

“Give me a possession of a buryingplace with you”

“That I may bury my dead”

“Out of my sight”
