Detailed English Explanation

Verse 34 — “I am Abraham’s servant”

The servant begins by identifying himself simply: “I am Abraham’s servant.”

This introduction is significant because he does not begin by talking about himself, his achievements, or his importance. His identity is connected to his master. He has come as Abraham’s representative and is carrying out a responsibility entrusted to him.

The verse also establishes credibility. Rebekah’s family needed to understand who this stranger was and why he had traveled such a great distance. His connection with Abraham explained the purpose of his visit.

There is also an important lesson about faithful service. The servant understands that his task is not primarily about personal recognition. His responsibility is to faithfully complete the assignment given to him.

Verse 35 — Abraham’s great blessing

The servant explains that “the Lord hath blessed my master greatly.”

He lists Abraham’s possessions: flocks, herds, silver, gold, servants, camels, and asses. The purpose is not merely to boast about material wealth. It establishes the remarkable position of Abraham’s household and explains the circumstances surrounding Isaac.

The servant attributes Abraham’s prosperity to the Lord. His description shows that he recognizes God as the source of his master’s blessing.

This provides an important spiritual principle: blessings and material possessions should not cause a person to forget their source. In the servant’s testimony, Abraham’s greatness is presented as something connected with God’s blessing.

Verse 36 — Sarah and Isaac

The servant then mentions Sarah: “Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old.”

This refers to Isaac, the son born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. Isaac’s birth was extraordinary because Sarah had been beyond the normal childbearing age.

The servant continues by explaining that Abraham had given Isaac everything he possessed. This demonstrates Isaac’s unique position as Abraham’s heir.

The detail is also important to the marriage proposal. Rebekah’s family is not simply being asked to send their daughter into an unknown household. They are hearing about a wealthy family, an heir named Isaac, and a servant who has been specifically commissioned to find Isaac a wife.

Verse 37 — Abraham’s command

The servant explains that Abraham made him swear an oath:

“Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites.”

Abraham specifically instructed his servant not to choose a wife for Isaac from among the Canaanite women living in the land where Abraham resided.

The command shows how seriously Abraham regarded the family and spiritual direction of Isaac’s future household. The servant was therefore not free to choose anyone simply according to appearance, wealth, or convenience.

Verse 38 — Returning to Abraham’s family

Abraham instead instructed the servant:

“Thou shalt go unto my father’s house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son.”

The servant was to travel to Abraham’s relatives and seek a wife for Isaac from that family.

This demonstrates that the mission required careful obedience. The servant had a specific assignment and could not simply change the conditions according to his own preference.

Verse 39 — The servant’s concern

The servant honestly admits:

“Peradventure the woman will not follow me.”

In modern English, this means, “Perhaps the woman will not come with me.”

This is a very human moment. Even though the servant had received a clear assignment, he recognized that another person had free choice. He could search for the right woman, but he could not force her to leave her family and travel with him.

His question reveals that faithful obedience does not mean pretending that difficulties do not exist. He understood the potential obstacle and brought it to his master’s attention.

Verse 40 — Abraham’s confidence in God

Abraham’s answer demonstrates confidence:

“The Lord, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way.”

Abraham believed that God would guide and assist the servant.

The phrase “before whom I walk” expresses a life lived in God’s presence and under God’s direction. Abraham’s confidence about the journey was rooted in his relationship with God.

The servant was therefore not being sent alone. Abraham trusted that God could guide the circumstances necessary to accomplish the mission.

Verse 41 — The servant’s responsibility

Abraham also provided a condition that would release the servant from his oath. If the relatives refused to give a woman for Isaac, the servant would be “clear” from his oath.

This is an important detail. Abraham wanted the servant to make every sincere effort, but he did not require him to force the outcome.

The passage therefore combines obedience, responsibility, prayer, trust, and human choice. The servant had a duty to act faithfully, while the final response belonged to the people involved.

The servant prayed, traveled, observed circumstances, communicated with the family, and acted responsibly.

6. People should not be forced into God’s purposes.
The servant was released from his oath if Abraham’s relatives did not agree. The narrative recognizes the importance of their response.

“And he said, I am Abraham’s servant.”

“Peradventure the woman will not follow me.”

“The Lord, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way.”
