Detailed English Explanation

“And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou?”

The servant first wanted to know Rebekah’s family identity. His question was important because Abraham had specifically instructed him to seek a wife for Isaac from his own extended family.

The question “Whose daughter art thou?” means, in modern English, “Who is your father?” or “Which family do you belong to?”

This demonstrates that the servant was carefully following Abraham’s instructions. He did not simply choose someone because she appeared kind or beautiful. He needed to establish her family connection.

Rebekah’s behavior at the well had already impressed him. She had shown generosity by giving him water and voluntarily watering his camels. Her family identity provided another important piece of information.

“And she said, The daughter of Bethuel”

Rebekah identified herself as the daughter of Bethuel. This was significant because Bethuel belonged to Abraham’s extended family.

The servant was therefore discovering that the woman who had demonstrated such kindness was connected to the very family he had traveled to find.

This shows how the narrative combines human responsibility with divine guidance. The servant made careful inquiries, observed Rebekah’s character, and confirmed her family background rather than acting carelessly.

“Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him”

Rebekah further explained her ancestry. Bethuel was the son of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, and Milcah was Nahor’s wife and Bethuel’s mother.

This family relationship is important because the servant had been sent to Abraham’s relatives. Rebekah was therefore not a random person encountered on the journey. She belonged to Abraham’s extended family.

Genesis 24 presents this family connection as an important confirmation that the servant had reached the right household. Later in the chapter, the servant explains that God had led him in the right way to find the daughter of his master’s brother for Isaac.

“And I put the earring upon her face”

The KJV uses the expression “earring upon her face.” Other English translations render the object as a ring on her nose or a nose ring, showing that the Hebrew expression can be understood in that sense.

The jewelry was part of the gifts given by Abraham’s servant during this encounter. Earlier in the chapter, the servant had already given Rebekah jewelry after seeing her kindness at the well.

The jewelry also served as part of the unfolding marriage arrangement. The servant was not merely giving a casual gift; the gifts were associated with his mission to identify and approach the family of the woman who could become Isaac’s wife.

“And the bracelets upon her hands”

The bracelets were another gift given to Rebekah. They represented generosity and also helped communicate the seriousness of the servant’s mission.

The important point is that the servant did not stop with the jewelry. He continued the conversation, explained his mission, and ultimately asked Rebekah’s family whether they would allow her to return with him.

Genesis 24:48 records the servant responding with worship and gratitude after recognizing that God had guided him. He describes the journey as being led “in the right way.”

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 24:47

1. Guidance can involve both prayer and careful action

The servant prayed for direction, but he also acted wisely. He asked questions, observed Rebekah’s conduct, confirmed her family, and communicated with her relatives.

The passage therefore presents faith and responsible action together. Trusting God does not mean refusing to investigate circumstances. The servant sought guidance while also using wisdom.

2. Character matters

Before the servant knew Rebekah’s family identity, he had already seen her generosity. She did more than provide the minimum amount of help. She offered to water the camels as well.

Her actions revealed a willingness to serve. Genesis 24 therefore places considerable emphasis on character rather than merely outward appearance.

3. Family identity was significant

The servant needed to know who Rebekah was and where she came from. Her connection to Bethuel, Nahor, and Milcah confirmed that she belonged to Abraham’s wider family.

The genealogy is not an unnecessary detail. It helps establish why Rebekah was an appropriate person for the mission.

4. Gratitude should follow recognized guidance

The servant did not take the successful outcome for granted. After recognizing the significance of what had happened, he bowed his head and worshiped God.

This teaches a valuable spiritual principle: when circumstances work together in an unmistakably meaningful way, a person should respond with gratitude rather than pride.

5. God’s purposes can unfold through ordinary events

Nothing about a well, a request for water, or a family question initially appears extraordinary. Yet these ordinary events became important parts of a major biblical story.

Genesis 24:47 reminds readers that significant purposes can unfold through everyday conversations, acts of kindness, travel, family relationships, and seemingly ordinary decisions.

Genesis 24:47 — Detailed Explanation in Urdu

King James Version:

“And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.”

“Whose daughter art thou?”

“The daughter of Bethuel”

“Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him”

“I put the earring upon her face”

“And the bracelets upon her hands”
