Genesis 24:59 — English Explanation
Genesis 24 describes Abraham’s effort to find a suitable wife for his son Isaac. Abraham did not want Isaac to marry from among the surrounding Canaanite peoples, so he sent his servant to Abraham’s relatives in Mesopotamia. The servant prayed for God’s guidance and was led to Rebekah, who demonstrated kindness by offering water to him and his camels.
After the servant explained his mission and the circumstances surrounding his meeting with Rebekah, Rebekah’s family accepted that the matter was under God’s providential direction. In Genesis 24:58, Rebekah was asked whether she was willing to leave with the servant, and she answered, “I will go.” Verse 59 then records the beginning of her journey.
1. “They sent away Rebekah their sister”
The expression shows that Rebekah’s family released her to begin a completely new chapter of her life. She was not merely traveling to another nearby village. She was leaving her familiar home and family to go to a distant land and marry Isaac.
The word “sister” expresses the family’s close relationship with Rebekah. Her departure therefore involved an emotional separation. She was leaving people who had known and cared for her throughout her early life.
This part of the story also reminds readers that important changes in life can require leaving something familiar. Rebekah’s willingness to go demonstrates courage and trust. She did not have every detail about her future, yet she was willing to take the next step.
2. “And her nurse”
Rebekah did not travel entirely without someone from her own household. Her nurse accompanied her.
The nurse was apparently a woman who had cared for Rebekah from childhood. Later in Genesis, Rebekah’s nurse is identified as Deborah, whose death is recorded in Genesis 35:8. This later reference indicates that the nurse was an important and long-standing member of Rebekah’s household.
Her presence is significant because it shows that Rebekah was not simply abandoned by her family. Someone who had played an important role in raising and caring for her went with her into the next stage of her life.
3. “And Abraham’s servant”
Abraham’s servant was the trusted representative who had been sent to find a wife for Isaac. Genesis 24 focuses heavily on his mission, prayer, obedience, and careful handling of Abraham’s instructions.
The servant’s role demonstrates the importance of faithfully carrying out an entrusted responsibility. He did not simply travel to Abraham’s relatives, choose someone according to his own preference, and return. He sought God’s guidance and carefully explained the purpose of his journey.
His return journey with Rebekah represents the successful completion of the mission Abraham had given him.
4. “And his men”
The servant was accompanied by other men. The journey therefore involved a group rather than a solitary traveler.
Their presence would have provided practical support and protection during the long journey. Genesis 24:61 later says that Rebekah and her attendants rode on camels and followed the man, showing that the departure was organized as a substantial journey.
5. Rebekah’s faith and courage
One of the strongest lessons from Genesis 24:59 is Rebekah’s willingness to move forward into an unknown future.
In the previous verse, her family asks whether she will go with Abraham’s servant. Rebekah answers decisively that she will go. Verse 59 records the family sending her away.
Her decision can be viewed as an example of faith expressed through action. She did not possess complete knowledge of what lay ahead. Nevertheless, she was willing to follow the path that had been opened before her.
This does not mean that every decision to leave home should be made without careful thought. Rather, the passage highlights the importance of trusting God when a legitimate and carefully considered calling requires courage and change.
6. God’s providence in the story
Genesis 24 repeatedly emphasizes God’s involvement in bringing Isaac and Rebekah together. The servant prayed for guidance, encountered Rebekah, and then discovered that she belonged to Abraham’s extended family.
The events unfold through ordinary human actions—traveling, meeting people, asking questions, making decisions, and preparing for a journey—yet the narrative presents God’s providence as working through those circumstances.
Genesis 24:59 therefore forms part of a larger story about God’s faithfulness to Abraham’s family and His purposes for the next generation.
7. The blessing that follows
Genesis 24:60 immediately follows the departure mentioned in verse 59. Rebekah’s family blesses her and expresses the hope that she will become the mother of many descendants.
This makes the scene more than an ordinary farewell. Rebekah is leaving her family with a blessing and moving toward a new family and future.
The following verse says that Rebekah arose with her attendants, rode on the camels, and followed the servant. The narrative then moves toward her first meeting with Isaac.
