English Explanation
Genesis 26:13–14 presents a powerful picture of growth, prosperity, perseverance, and the consequences of visible success. Isaac’s story is especially meaningful because his increase did not happen in an easy or ideal environment. He was living during a difficult period, yet he continued to work, sow, and trust God’s direction.
1. “And the man waxed great”
The expression “waxed great” means that Isaac became increasingly prosperous, established, and influential. The verse does not describe a sudden achievement that appeared without effort. Instead, it presents a process of advancement.
Isaac’s life demonstrates that growth can happen gradually. A person may begin with limited resources, but through faithfulness, wisdom, patience, and God’s blessing, those resources can increase.
The important point is that Isaac’s greatness was connected with God’s blessing rather than merely human ambition. Genesis 26:12 specifically establishes that God blessed Isaac before verses 13–14 describe the extent of his prosperity.
2. “And went forward”
This phrase emphasizes progress.
Isaac did not remain where he started. He moved forward and continued developing what had been entrusted to him. Spiritual growth and practical growth often require continued movement rather than remaining comfortable with yesterday’s achievements.
“Went forward” can therefore encourage us to keep progressing in:
- Faith
- Wisdom
- Character
- Work
- Relationships
- Responsibility
- Service to others
Biblical prosperity should not be understood merely as possessing more money. True progress includes becoming a person who can responsibly handle greater opportunities and blessings.
3. “And grew until he became very great”
The wording gives us a picture of continuous increase.
Isaac’s progress was not limited to one successful season. He continued to grow until his success became substantial. The verse therefore contains an important lesson about patience: meaningful growth often occurs through a process.
Sometimes people become discouraged because they do not see immediate results. Isaac’s example reminds us that growth can take time. A seed does not become a harvest instantly. There is a process between sowing and abundance.
Genesis 26 connects Isaac’s prosperity with his obedience and with God’s blessing, making the passage more than a simple lesson about material wealth.
4. “For he had possession of flocks”
Isaac’s wealth included large numbers of animals. In the ancient world, flocks were an important form of wealth and livelihood.
Sheep, goats, and other livestock provided food, materials, trade opportunities, and economic security. Possessing substantial flocks meant that Isaac had developed significant resources.
This also shows that biblical prosperity in this historical setting cannot be evaluated only according to modern ideas of money. Wealth could consist of livestock, land, servants, agricultural production, and other forms of property.
5. “And possession of herds”
The verse also mentions Isaac’s herds. His increasing livestock represented the expansion of his household and economic influence.
The repetition of “possession” emphasizes the extent of his resources. Isaac was not merely surviving; he had reached a level of prosperity that was clearly visible to the people around him.
His success became so noticeable that it produced a reaction from the Philistines.
6. “And great store of servants”
Isaac’s household had become very large. The KJV uses the expression “great store of servants”, referring to a considerable number of household workers or servants.
This detail is important because it shows the scale of Isaac’s operation. His possessions required people to manage livestock, agriculture, household responsibilities, and other activities.
In the ancient world, an individual’s wealth could therefore be reflected in the size of his household and the productive capacity of his estate.
7. “And the Philistines envied him”
This is one of the most important warnings in the passage.
Isaac’s increase did not make everyone happy for him. His prosperity attracted envy from the Philistines.
Envy occurs when someone becomes troubled or resentful because another person possesses something desirable. Instead of appreciating another person’s success, the envious person wishes that success belonged to himself or that the other person did not have it.
The next verses demonstrate that the Philistines acted against Isaac by stopping up the wells that Abraham’s servants had previously dug.
This teaches us that visible success can sometimes attract opposition.
8. Prosperity does not mean the absence of problems
One of the most valuable lessons from Genesis 26 is that blessing and difficulty can exist at the same time.
Isaac was becoming increasingly prosperous, yet his prosperity did not eliminate conflict. In fact, his success contributed to the hostility he experienced.
This is an important correction to the idea that a blessed life must always be an easy life.
A person can experience God’s blessing and still encounter:
- Jealous people
- Opposition
- Misunderstanding
- Competition
- Loss
- Difficult decisions
- Pressure and responsibility
The presence of difficulties does not automatically mean that a person has been abandoned by God.
9. Isaac’s response is also important
The story becomes especially instructive after the Philistines interfere with Isaac’s wells. Isaac repeatedly moves away from conflict and continues digging wells.
Eventually, he reaches a place where there is room for him, and he says, “For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land” (Genesis 26:22, KJV).
This demonstrates an important principle: Isaac did not allow other people’s envy to destroy his future.
He did not spend his entire life trying to defeat every jealous person. Instead, he continued moving forward.
10. The deeper spiritual lesson
Genesis 26:13–14 is not simply a promise that every believer will become materially wealthy. The passage describes a specific historical event in Isaac’s life.
Its broader lesson is that God can cause a person to flourish even during difficult circumstances, and that genuine growth should be accompanied by faithfulness, patience, wisdom, and humility.
The verse also challenges us to examine our response to other people’s success.
When someone else prospers, we can respond with envy or gratitude. Envy asks, “Why do they have it?” Wisdom asks, “What can I learn from their faithfulness?”
A mature person can celebrate another person’s success without feeling that another person’s blessing diminishes his own value.
1. “And the man waxed great”
2. “And went forward”
3. “And grew until he became very great”
4. “For he had possession of flocks”
5. “And possession of herds”
6. “And great store of servants”
7. “And the Philistines envied him”
“For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
