Genesis 27:27 Meaning and Explanation

Genesis 27:27 is an important verse because it stands at the decisive moment when Isaac begins to pronounce his blessing upon Jacob, believing that Jacob is Esau. The verse combines physical details—coming near, kissing, smelling clothing—with a powerful image of a field blessed by God.

The immediate context is Genesis chapter 27. Isaac, now elderly and unable to see, intends to bless Esau. Rebekah has instructed Jacob to approach his father and receive the blessing intended for Esau. Jacob wears Esau’s garments, and his hands and neck are covered so that Isaac will feel hairiness similar to Esau’s. Isaac remains uncertain because Jacob’s voice sounds different, but the clothing provides another sign that convinces him.

Genesis 27:27 therefore describes the final sensory confirmation before Isaac gives the blessing.

“And he came near, and kissed him”

The first action is physical closeness. Jacob comes near to Isaac and kisses him.

In the ancient family setting, a kiss between a father and son could express affection, relationship, and familiarity. Isaac asks Jacob to come near because he is trying to establish the identity of the person standing before him.

The kiss also becomes part of Isaac’s process of examination. He is not simply accepting Jacob’s claim immediately. Because he cannot see, he relies upon touch, hearing, and smell.

This detail shows how carefully the scene is constructed. Isaac has already heard Jacob’s voice, felt his hands, and now smells his clothing. Each sense contributes to his conclusion.

“And he smelled the smell of his raiment”

Isaac smells Jacob’s garments, which he believes belong to Esau.

This is particularly significant because clothing carried the scent of the environment in which a person lived and worked. Esau was associated with the open country and hunting, while Jacob’s clothing has been prepared to make Isaac believe that Esau is standing before him.

The smell becomes the final piece of evidence that satisfies Isaac. Although his hearing had caused uncertainty, the clothing’s scent helps persuade him that the person before him is truly his older son.

The biblical narrative therefore emphasizes Isaac’s dependence upon his senses because of his blindness. The smell of the garments plays a decisive role in the deception.

“And blessed him”

After smelling the garments, Isaac blesses his son.

This is not merely a casual expression of good wishes. In Genesis 27, Isaac’s blessing carries substantial importance. It is connected with prosperity, authority, family leadership, and the continuation of the patriarchal promise.

The following verses show what Isaac’s blessing contains: the dew of heaven, the richness of the earth, abundant grain and wine, authority over peoples, and blessing and protection in relation to those who bless or curse him.

Thus, Genesis 27:27 introduces the blessing that continues in Genesis 27:28–29.

“The smell of my son is as the smell of a field”

This is the central image of the verse.

Isaac compares the smell of his son’s clothing to a field that has been blessed by the LORD.

A healthy and fruitful field represents abundance, fertility, productivity, and divine favor. A field blessed by God is not barren or lifeless. It produces crops and represents the provision necessary for life.

The imagery is therefore positive. Isaac perceives the fragrance associated with the countryside as evidence of a prosperous and blessed life.

The comparison also fits the larger blessing that immediately follows. Isaac speaks about the dew of heaven, the richness of the earth, grain, and wine. The image of the blessed field naturally leads into these agricultural blessings.

The Meaning of “Which the LORD Hath Blessed”

The phrase “which the LORD hath blessed” is especially important.

Isaac does not merely describe a beautiful or productive field. He describes a field that has received blessing from the LORD. In the biblical context, agricultural abundance is frequently associated with God’s provision and favor.

The verse therefore connects fragrance, fruitfulness, and blessing.

The field represents an environment where God’s blessing is visible through abundance. Isaac desires that same kind of blessing for his son. This becomes clearer in the next verse, where he asks that God give his son “the dew of heaven and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine.”

A Deeper Spiritual Lesson

One important lesson from this passage is that outward appearances can be convincing while not necessarily revealing the whole truth.

Isaac believes Jacob is Esau because the evidence available to him appears to support that conclusion. Jacob has Esau’s clothing, his hands have been disguised, and the garments carry the appropriate scent.

The passage therefore sits within a complicated story involving deception, family favoritism, and the fulfillment of God’s purposes. It should not be separated from the larger narrative.

Genesis 27:27 should not simply be interpreted as teaching that deception is good or that receiving a blessing through dishonesty is morally acceptable. Instead, the verse records what happened in a deeply complicated family situation.

At the same time, the chapter demonstrates that God’s purposes ultimately move forward even through human weakness and failure. The story continues beyond this moment and becomes an important part of Jacob’s life and the development of the nation of Israel.

“And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:”

“And he came near, and kissed him”

“He smelled the smell of his raiment”

“And blessed him”

“The smell of my son is as the smell of a field”

“Which the LORD hath blessed”
