Genesis 31:17 may appear to be a simple statement about a family preparing for a journey, but it carries considerable significance when read within the surrounding story.
The verse says, “Then Jacob rose up.” The expression indicates action. Jacob had reached the point where he needed to act upon the direction he had received. His departure was not merely a change of residence. He was leaving the household of Laban and beginning the journey toward Canaan, the land connected with the promises given to his family.
The previous verses explain why Jacob made this decision. Jacob had experienced difficult circumstances while working for Laban. His wages had been changed repeatedly, yet Jacob had continued to prosper. In Genesis 31, Jacob explained to Rachel and Leah that God had seen his father’s treatment of him and had provided for him. Rachel and Leah agreed with Jacob that they should leave their father’s household. They told Jacob to do whatever God had commanded him.
