English Explanation

Genesis 34:19 describes Shechem’s immediate response to the condition that had been presented by Jacob’s sons. Earlier in the chapter, Shechem had taken Dinah, Jacob’s daughter, and the subsequent events led to negotiations between Shechem’s family and Jacob’s family. Jacob’s sons insisted that the men of Shechem’s city accept circumcision if they were to become one people with them. Shechem and Hamor agreed to this condition, and verse 19 emphasizes that Shechem did not delay.

The phrase “deferred not” means that Shechem did not postpone or hesitate in carrying out what was requested. The underlying idea is one of acting without delay. Several modern translations express the thought as “did not delay,” “did not hesitate,” or “lost no time.”

“Because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter”

The reason given for Shechem’s eagerness was his strong desire for Dinah. The KJV says that he “had delight in Jacob’s daughter.” Other translations render this as being delighted with her, loving her, or wanting her very much.

It is important, however, not to interpret this phrase as automatically describing a morally pure or exemplary love. Genesis 34 has already described Shechem’s conduct toward Dinah in a troubling way. Therefore, the statement explains his motivation for accepting the proposed arrangement; it does not necessarily approve everything he had previously done.

This distinction is important when studying biblical narratives. The Bible frequently records the actions and motivations of people without presenting every action as something to imitate. Genesis 34 is a narrative of human desire, family conflict, negotiation, deception, violence, and its consequences.

“He was more honourable than all the house of his father”

The second part of the verse says that Shechem was “more honourable than all the house of his father.” In context, this indicates that Shechem held an especially respected or prominent position within his father’s household. Modern translations commonly use expressions such as “the most honored,” “more respected,” or “the most important” member of his father’s household.

The wording does not mean that Shechem was morally righteous in every respect. Rather, it describes his standing among his own people. Biblical language can distinguish between social honor and moral righteousness. A person may possess influence, status, wealth, or respect within society while still making seriously wrong choices.

This is one of the important lessons of the verse: social honor does not automatically equal moral character.

The meaning of “the thing”

The phrase “to do the thing” refers to complying with the condition that had been placed before Shechem and Hamor. The surrounding verses explain that the men of the city were asked to be circumcised so that the two groups could live together and become one people. Shechem did not hesitate because of his strong desire to establish a relationship with Dinah.

The immediate narrative therefore gives us three connected ideas:

  1. Shechem strongly desired Dinah.

  2. He did not delay when a condition was placed before him.

  3. He was regarded as an important and honored member of his father’s household.

Yet the events that follow show that the situation was far more complicated than Shechem apparently understood. Jacob’s sons used the proposed agreement as part of a plan that resulted in violence against the men of the city. Thus, Genesis 34 should be read as a whole when considering the significance of verse 19.

A lesson about desire and decision-making

One useful spiritual lesson from this verse is that strong desire can make a person act quickly without adequately considering the consequences.

Shechem’s desire for Dinah was powerful enough that he immediately accepted the proposed requirement. His social position did not protect him from the consequences of his decisions. The narrative eventually becomes tragic, demonstrating that personal desire, political influence, and family negotiations cannot replace wisdom and righteous conduct.

The verse therefore should not simply be presented as a positive statement about acting quickly. There are times when prompt action is good, but there are also times when a person needs careful reflection before making an important decision.

The broader biblical lesson is that our desires should be governed by truth, wisdom, self-control, and respect for others.

Genesis 34:19 — اردو میں تفصیلی وضاحت

یہ آیت پیدایش 34:19 سے ہے اور اس میں شَکَم (Shechem) کا ذکر ہے، جو حمور کا بیٹا تھا۔ آیت کا پس منظر دینہ، یعقوب کی بیٹی، سے متعلق ایک نہایت پیچیدہ اور افسوسناک واقعہ ہے۔

KJV میں آیت یوں ہے:

“And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.”

“The young man deferred not”

“Because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter”

“He was more honourable than all the house of his father”

آیت کا اگلا حصہ کہتا ہے:

“and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.”
