English Explanation
Genesis 36 begins a detailed record of Esau’s family line. Esau is also identified with Edom, and the chapter explains how his descendants developed into the people associated with Edom. Genesis 36:2–5 specifically focuses on Esau’s wives and the sons born to him while he was living in Canaan.
1. Esau’s three wives
The passage names three women connected with Esau:
-
Adah, daughter of Elon the Hittite.
-
Oholibamah, daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite.
-
Basemath, daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.
The text therefore gives information about both the women’s family backgrounds and their connection with Esau. Adah and Oholibamah are associated with peoples living in Canaan, while Basemath is identified as a daughter of Ishmael.
The names of Esau’s wives can appear differently when Genesis is compared across passages and translations. Genesis 26:34–35, Genesis 28:8–9, and Genesis 36 contain related genealogical information, and commentators have proposed different explanations for the differences in names. Some understand certain women to have had alternate names, while others discuss the possibility of different traditions or individuals. Therefore, it is useful to distinguish what Genesis 36 itself explicitly says from later attempts to reconcile every name.
2. Adah’s son: Eliphaz
Genesis 36:4 says that Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau.
Eliphaz is particularly important in the genealogy that follows. Later in Genesis 36, the sons of Eliphaz are listed, including Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. Eliphaz also has a son named Amalek through Timna. Thus, the genealogy expands from Esau to his descendants and eventually to various clans associated with Edom.
3. Basemath’s son: Reuel
The second son named in this passage is Reuel, whose mother is identified as Basemath.
Genesis 36 later records Reuel’s sons as Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. This demonstrates the purpose of the genealogy: the writer is not merely recording personal names but tracing the development of Esau’s family into established family groups and chiefs.
4. Oholibamah’s three sons
Oholibamah had three sons:
-
Jeush
-
Jalam
-
Korah
These three are explicitly connected with Oholibamah and Esau. Genesis 36 later lists them among the chiefs descended from Esau.
5. Five sons born in Canaan
The passage concludes by emphasizing that these were Esau’s sons born in Canaan. The total is five:
-
Eliphaz — son of Adah
-
Reuel — son of Basemath
-
Jeush — son of Oholibamah
-
Jalam — son of Oholibamah
-
Korah — son of Oholibamah
So the immediate genealogy in Genesis 36:2–5 records three wives and five sons.
This statement also provides a geographical marker. These sons were born while Esau was in Canaan. Immediately afterward, Genesis 36:6–8 describes Esau moving away from Jacob and eventually settling in the hill country of Seir. The stated reason is that their possessions and livestock had become too numerous for both households to remain together in the same area.
6. Esau and the development of Edom
Genesis repeatedly connects Esau with Edom. Genesis 36:1 introduces the chapter as the family history of Esau, “that is, Edom,” and verse 9 again identifies Esau as the father of the Edomites.
Consequently, Genesis 36 is more than a list of family names. It establishes the ancestry of a people. The descendants of Esau are subsequently organized into clans and chiefs in the region of Edom. The chapter eventually discusses Edomite chiefs and kings as well.
-
(Jeush)
-
(Jalam)
-
(Korah)
