Joseph had been sent by his father Jacob to check on his brothers and the flocks. His brothers had been feeding their father’s flock in the area of Shechem. Jacob wanted to know whether everything was well with them and the animals, so he sent Joseph to find them and bring back a report.
Joseph obeyed his father. When he arrived in Shechem, however, he could not find his brothers. Instead of simply returning home, he continued searching for them. A man found Joseph wandering in the area and asked him what he was looking for. Joseph explained that he was looking for his brothers. The man then told him that they had left that place and that he had heard them say that they were going to Dothan.
