English Explanation
Genesis 37:18–20 presents one of the darkest moments in the early story of Joseph. Joseph’s brothers see him coming from a distance, and instead of welcoming him as their brother, they begin to make plans against him. Their hatred has grown so strong that they discuss killing him. They mock him by calling him “this dreamer,” referring to the dreams Joseph had previously shared with them.
This passage is important because it shows how jealousy, resentment, anger, and hatred can gradually become destructive when they are allowed to grow in the heart.
1. “When they saw him afar off”
The brothers recognized Joseph while he was still far away. The fact that they began planning against him before he even reached them shows that their hostility was already established.
Joseph was not approaching them expecting danger. He had been sent by his father, Israel, to find his brothers and bring back information about them and the flock. Joseph apparently did not know what his brothers were discussing.
This creates an important contrast. Joseph was approaching his brothers with an ordinary family responsibility, while his brothers were preparing something harmful against him.
The passage therefore reminds readers that hatred can sometimes exist on one side of a relationship without the other person fully understanding what is happening.
2. “They conspired against him to slay him”
The word “conspired” indicates deliberate planning. This was not merely an argument or a moment of anger. The brothers discussed what they wanted to do.
Their decision had been influenced by earlier events. Joseph was loved specially by his father, and his brothers had become jealous of him. Joseph had also told them about dreams in which his family appeared to bow before him. Those dreams intensified their resentment.
Instead of asking God for wisdom about their feelings, the brothers allowed jealousy to develop into hatred and hatred into violence.
The passage gives a serious warning about the progression of destructive emotions. A feeling such as jealousy may begin quietly, but if it is continually encouraged, it can influence words, decisions, and actions.
3. “Behold, this dreamer cometh”
The expression “this dreamer” is especially significant. The brothers do not call Joseph simply by his name. Their words are dismissive and mocking.
Joseph’s dreams had become a symbol of everything they disliked about him. Instead of considering whether the dreams might have significance, they treated them as evidence of Joseph’s supposed arrogance.
This teaches an important lesson about the way people can reduce another person to a label. When resentment becomes strong, it can become easier to mock someone than to understand them.
The brothers saw Joseph through the lens of their jealousy. Their attitude prevented them from seeing him simply as their younger brother.
4. “Let us slay him”
The brothers’ plan demonstrates how far their hatred had developed. They were not merely planning to frighten Joseph or send him away. They were discussing his death.
The Bible does not present this behavior as something admirable. The passage exposes the seriousness of hatred and revenge.
Human beings can sometimes allow anger to become so powerful that they stop seeing another person as someone valuable. Genesis 37 warns readers about this danger.
It is also important to recognize the difference between Joseph’s dreams and his brothers’ interpretation of them. Their hatred does not prove that Joseph’s dreams were meaningless. In the larger story, God continues working through circumstances that initially appear disastrous.
5. “Cast him into some pit”
The brothers proposed putting Joseph into a pit. Their plan reveals that they wanted to remove him from their lives.
The pit becomes an important part of Joseph’s story. What appears to be the beginning of Joseph’s destruction eventually becomes part of the path through which his life takes an unexpected direction.
This does not mean that the brothers’ actions were good. Rather, the broader story demonstrates that human wrongdoing cannot prevent God from accomplishing His purposes.
Joseph’s situation was about to change dramatically, but the brothers could not see what God would ultimately do.
6. “We will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him”
The brothers even planned to deceive their father. They intended to create a false explanation for Joseph’s disappearance.
This adds another dimension to their wrongdoing. Their plan involved both violence and deception.
Their father loved Joseph deeply, so a false report of his death would cause tremendous grief. The brothers were not only thinking about what they wanted to do to Joseph; they were also prepared to manipulate their father’s understanding of what had happened.
The passage therefore shows how one sinful decision can lead to another. Hatred leads to a plan, the plan leads toward violence, and violence requires deception to conceal it.
7. “We shall see what will become of his dreams”
This final statement is particularly important.
The brothers believed that destroying Joseph would also destroy the future represented by his dreams. Their attitude was essentially: if Joseph is removed, his dreams cannot happen.
But the larger story of Genesis demonstrates the opposite. Joseph’s dreams ultimately become connected with events that bring him into a position of authority and eventually allow him to preserve many lives during famine.
The brothers could attack Joseph, but they could not control God’s purposes.
This is one of the central lessons of Joseph’s story: human beings may make plans, but God remains sovereign over the outcome.
The passage does not suggest that suffering is insignificant. Joseph experienced genuine injustice and hardship. Yet his difficulties did not mean that God had abandoned him.
Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 37:18–20
Guard your heart against jealousy
Joseph’s brothers did not suddenly become hostile. Their resentment had been developing over time. This shows why jealousy needs to be confronted before it becomes hatred.
Do not judge someone’s future too quickly
The brothers mocked Joseph because of his dreams. They assumed they understood what those dreams meant and believed they could prevent them from being fulfilled.
The story shows the danger of confidently declaring what another person’s future will be.
Hatred can distort relationships
The brothers stopped viewing Joseph primarily as their brother. Their resentment changed the way they interpreted everything about him.
Healthy relationships require honesty, forgiveness, patience, and humility.
God can work through difficult circumstances
Joseph’s circumstances looked terrible at this moment. Yet this was not the end of his story.
The broader biblical narrative shows that God remained at work even when Joseph could not see what was happening.
Do not respond to wrong with more wrong
The brothers’ actions demonstrate how one wrong response can create another. Anger does not become righteous simply because someone feels hurt or offended.
Genesis 37 encourages readers to seek wisdom and righteousness rather than allowing resentment to control their decisions.
“And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.”
