Detailed Explanation in English

Genesis 37:5–7 introduces an important moment in the life of Joseph. Joseph was the son of Jacob, also called Israel, and he was especially loved by his father. The previous verses describe the special relationship between Joseph and his father and the tension that already existed between Joseph and his brothers. In this passage, Joseph receives a dream in which he sees himself and his brothers working together in a field. They are binding sheaves of grain, but Joseph’s sheaf rises and stands upright while the sheaves belonging to his brothers gather around it and bow before it.

The dream is simple in its imagery but significant in the story of Joseph. It becomes one of several dreams through which Joseph’s future position is foreshadowed.

Joseph Dreamed a Dream

The passage begins with the words, “And Joseph dreamed a dream.” In the biblical narrative, dreams sometimes serve as a means through which God reveals something concerning future events or purposes. At this stage, Joseph himself does not appear to understand everything that the dream will eventually mean.

The dream occurs while Joseph is still young. He is not yet in a position of authority. He is living within his father’s household and working with his brothers. Therefore, the picture presented in the dream is very different from Joseph’s current circumstances.

The dream points toward something that Joseph will experience later in his life. The symbolism of standing upright and the other sheaves bowing before his sheaf suggests a future in which Joseph will occupy a position of authority or importance in relation to his brothers.

He Told His Brothers

Joseph did not keep the dream to himself. The Scripture says that “he told it his brethren.” This detail is important because his brothers already had negative feelings toward him.

Joseph’s relationship with his brothers had been damaged by jealousy and resentment. His father’s special love for Joseph had contributed to the tension within the family. Therefore, when Joseph told them about a dream in which their sheaves bowed before his sheaf, they did not receive the message positively.

The passage says that “they hated him yet the more.”

This shows how quickly jealousy can grow when people believe that another person is being elevated above them. The brothers did not simply disagree with Joseph’s dream; their hostility toward him became stronger.

The Symbolism of the Sheaves

The central image of the dream is agricultural. Joseph says:

“We were binding sheaves in the field.”

A sheaf is a bundle of harvested grain stalks. Since Joseph and his brothers were involved with the work of the family, the image would have been familiar to them.

Joseph’s sheaf then “arose, and also stood upright.”

The upright position distinguishes Joseph’s sheaf from the others. Then the brothers’ sheaves stand around Joseph’s sheaf and “made obeisance” to it.

The expression “made obeisance” means to bow down or show submission and respect. Within the context of the dream, this imagery points toward Joseph eventually occupying a position in which his brothers would depend upon him or recognize his authority.

Later events in Joseph’s life give greater meaning to this dream. Joseph eventually rises from severe hardship to an influential position in Egypt. During a time of famine, his brothers come to Egypt seeking food. In the larger story, they encounter Joseph in a position of authority without initially recognizing him. The dream therefore becomes an early indication of events that would unfold many years later.

The Dream and God’s Providence

One of the major themes connected with Joseph’s story is God’s providence. Joseph experiences rejection, hardship, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment. Yet these difficulties do not prevent God’s purpose from unfolding.

Genesis 37:5–7 is therefore more than an account of a young man’s unusual dream. It begins a chain of events that demonstrates how God’s purposes can develop over many years.

Joseph could not see the entire path ahead of him. At the time of the dream, there was no obvious reason to think that he would become a powerful administrator in Egypt. His brothers certainly did not imagine that they would one day come to him for help.

The dream gives the reader an important perspective: circumstances may change dramatically, but God’s purposes can continue moving forward.

A Lesson About Jealousy

The reaction of Joseph’s brothers also provides a significant spiritual lesson.

Their jealousy had already developed because of the special affection Jacob showed toward Joseph. Instead of dealing with their feelings in a healthy way, they allowed resentment to deepen.

When they heard Joseph’s dream, their hatred increased.

Jealousy can distort relationships because it causes people to focus more on another person’s position than on their own responsibilities and blessings. The brothers became increasingly concerned about Joseph rather than seeking peace within their family.

The passage encourages readers to examine their own hearts. When another person receives recognition, opportunity, success, or responsibility, the proper response is not hatred or resentment.

Joseph’s Youth and Lack of Understanding

Joseph was young, and his telling of the dream may also reflect his youthful perspective. The text does not explicitly say that Joseph intended to boast or provoke his brothers. Therefore, it is important not to assign motives to him that the passage does not provide.

What we can say from the text is that Joseph shared the dream, his brothers interpreted it as something significant concerning their relationship to him, and their hatred increased.

The passage invites readers to recognize that God’s plans can be larger than human understanding. Joseph could communicate what he had seen without knowing all that would happen afterward.

The Broader Meaning of Genesis 37

Genesis 37 begins a major section of Joseph’s story. The dreams introduced here become important signs within the narrative. Joseph’s life demonstrates a movement from the security of his father’s household into hardship and eventually into authority.

The dream in verses 5–7 is especially connected with Joseph’s future relationship with his brothers. The sheaves represent the agricultural setting of the dream, while their bowing before Joseph’s sheaf represents the future reversal of their positions.

At this point, however, Joseph’s future is hidden from everyone involved.

That is one of the powerful features of the story. The reader knows that the dream matters, but Joseph and his brothers do not yet know how the events will unfold.

“And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.”

“they hated him yet the more.”

“my sheaf arose, and also stood upright.”

“Made Obeisance”

“Made obeisance”
