English Explanation of Genesis 40:20
1. “And it came to pass the third day”
The verse begins by connecting the events directly with the time period Joseph had already mentioned. When Joseph interpreted the dreams of the butler and baker, he told them that the meaning would be fulfilled within three days.
Now the third day arrived. This detail demonstrates the importance of God’s timing in the story of Joseph. Joseph was still in prison, and there was no visible indication that his circumstances were about to change. Nevertheless, events were moving forward according to a larger purpose.
The phrase also teaches an important lesson about waiting. Joseph could not control when Pharaoh would act, when the prisoners would be released, or when his own situation would change. He had to remain faithful while circumstances developed around him.
2. “Which was Pharaoh’s birthday”
The third day was Pharaoh’s birthday. Pharaoh was the ruler of Egypt, and his birthday became an occasion for a large celebration.
Birthdays and royal celebrations could provide opportunities for rulers to honor servants, officials, or prisoners. In this situation, Pharaoh used the occasion to review the cases of the chief butler and chief baker.
The timing is important because it provided the setting in which Joseph’s interpretation would be fulfilled. What appeared to be an ordinary royal celebration became a significant moment in Joseph’s story.
3. “That he made a feast unto all his servants”
Pharaoh prepared a feast for his servants. As a powerful ruler, he had many officials and servants under his authority, and the birthday celebration brought them together.
This feast creates a contrast between Pharaoh’s royal environment and Joseph’s prison. Pharaoh was surrounded by food, celebration, and servants, while Joseph remained confined.
Yet Joseph’s difficult circumstances did not prevent God’s purpose from moving forward. The story repeatedly shows that Joseph’s position could change even when he could not see how that change would happen.
4. “And he lifted up the head of the chief butler”
The expression “lifted up the head” refers to restoring or honoring the chief butler. Pharaoh brought the chief butler back into his former position.
This fulfilled Joseph’s interpretation of the butler’s dream. Joseph had explained that the three branches represented three days and that afterward Pharaoh would restore the butler to his position.
The fulfillment demonstrates the accuracy of Joseph’s interpretation.
5. “And of the chief baker among his servants”
The verse also mentions the chief baker. His situation was different from that of the butler. Joseph had interpreted the baker’s dream as indicating a very different outcome.
Therefore, Genesis 40:20 introduces the fulfillment of both dreams. One official would be restored, while the other would experience judgment.
The verse does not present these events as random. They occur at the precise time Joseph had indicated.
Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 40:20
God’s timing may be different from our expectations
Joseph was in prison, but his story was not finished. The events surrounding the butler and baker were preparing circumstances that would eventually bring Joseph before Pharaoh.
A person may not immediately understand why a difficult situation is happening. Joseph’s story encourages readers to remain faithful even when the future is unclear.
Faithfulness matters during difficult seasons
Joseph continued to serve and help others even while he was imprisoned. He did not allow his difficult circumstances to prevent him from using the abilities God had given him.
His willingness to interpret the dreams of the other prisoners eventually became connected with his future opportunity before Pharaoh.
Dreams and interpretations were part of Joseph’s story
Genesis records several important dreams throughout Joseph’s life. In Genesis 40, the dreams of the butler and baker become another step in the larger narrative.
Joseph did not claim that the interpretation originated from his own wisdom. Earlier, he acknowledged that interpretations belong to God. This is an important part of Joseph’s character: he recognized God as the ultimate source of understanding.
Events can have significance beyond what people immediately see
The birthday celebration may have seemed like an event centered only on Pharaoh. However, it became an important turning point in Joseph’s story.
The restoration of the chief butler would eventually become especially important because the butler would later remember Joseph when Pharaoh had troubling dreams.
Thus, Genesis 40:20 shows how one event can become connected to another in ways that are not immediately obvious.
