English Explanation

Genesis 42:23 is an important verse in the story of Joseph and his brothers. At this point in the narrative, Joseph’s brothers had come to Egypt because of the famine in Canaan. They needed grain to survive, but they did not recognize Joseph, their own brother, who had become a powerful ruler in Egypt.

The verse says, “And they knew not that Joseph understood them.” This statement is significant because Joseph understood everything his brothers were saying. The brothers believed that Joseph was an Egyptian official who could not understand their Hebrew conversation. Because Joseph appeared to communicate through an interpreter, they spoke openly in his presence about their past actions and their guilt concerning Joseph.

Joseph, however, was not ignorant of their words. He understood their conversation. This allowed him to hear their hearts without immediately revealing his identity.

Joseph’s Hidden Identity

Joseph’s brothers had sold him many years earlier because of jealousy and hatred. They had separated him from his family, and Joseph eventually ended up in Egypt. Through many difficult experiences, Joseph rose from slavery and imprisonment to a position of great authority.

When the brothers came to Egypt for grain, they bowed before Joseph without realizing who he was. This was a remarkable development because Joseph’s earlier dreams had indicated that his family would one day bow before him.

Yet Joseph did not immediately tell them who he was.

Genesis 42:23 shows one reason why Joseph was able to observe his brothers carefully. They thought they were speaking privately among themselves because they assumed Joseph did not understand their language. Instead, Joseph understood them through his own knowledge of their language while appearing to communicate through an interpreter.

The Importance of the Interpreter

The phrase “for he spake unto them by an interpreter” explains why Joseph’s brothers did not realize that he understood them.

An interpreter was someone who translated one language into another. Since Joseph was speaking to them as an Egyptian ruler, his brothers apparently assumed that he did not understand their Hebrew language.

This created an important situation in the story. Joseph could listen to their conversation without immediately exposing himself.

The brothers began discussing their previous treatment of Joseph. Their words revealed that their consciences had not forgotten what they had done. Their suffering in Egypt caused them to reflect on their past actions.

This teaches an important spiritual principle: people may try to move forward from past actions, but guilt can remain in the conscience until it is confronted.

Joseph Was Listening

Joseph’s silence in this moment is also meaningful. He did not immediately interrupt his brothers and say, “I understand everything you are saying.”

Instead, he listened.

Sometimes listening reveals what speaking cannot. Joseph learned what his brothers were thinking and how they viewed their past actions. Their conversation demonstrated that the events involving Joseph had remained in their memories.

This part of the story also shows that Joseph was carefully observing his brothers before deciding how to respond to them.

The Brothers Did Not Recognize Joseph

One of the striking features of Genesis 42 is the dramatic reversal in Joseph’s story.

Years earlier, Joseph had been the younger brother who was rejected and sold. Now his brothers stood before him asking for food. Joseph had changed in position, appearance, language, and clothing, while the brothers did not expect to see him in Egypt.

The brothers therefore failed to recognize him.

Joseph, however, recognized them.

Genesis 42:23 adds another layer to this situation: Joseph understood their words even though they believed he needed an interpreter.

This created an unusual contrast:

  • Joseph knew who they were.
  • Joseph understood what they were saying.
  • The brothers did not know Joseph’s identity.
  • The brothers did not realize Joseph understood them.

The situation gave Joseph an opportunity to examine whether his brothers had changed.

A Lesson About Human Conscience

The surrounding passage shows that Joseph’s brothers were beginning to recognize the seriousness of what they had done years before.

Their earlier decision had caused tremendous pain. At the time, they may have thought they could simply leave Joseph behind and continue their lives. But many years later, when they faced difficulty, their consciences brought the past back to their minds.

This demonstrates the importance of dealing honestly with wrongdoing.

A person cannot always control when memories of past actions return. But confession, repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation can begin the process of healing broken relationships.

God’s Providence in Joseph’s Story

Genesis 42:23 also belongs to the larger theme of God’s providence throughout Joseph’s life.

Joseph experienced betrayal, slavery, false accusations, imprisonment, and hardship. Yet those circumstances eventually brought him into a position where he could preserve many lives during the famine.

The verse does not mean that every painful event is good in itself. Rather, the larger Joseph narrative shows how God can work through circumstances that people did not understand at the time.

Joseph’s brothers had intended harm when they sold him, but God ultimately used Joseph’s position in Egypt to preserve life.

This encourages readers to remember that God’s purposes can extend beyond what people can see in the present moment.

Wisdom in Joseph’s Response

Joseph’s decision not to reveal himself immediately can also teach us about wisdom and patience.

The Bible does not present every situation as requiring an immediate emotional response. Joseph had an opportunity to react quickly, but instead he carefully observed his brothers.

This does not mean that deception is always right or that people should manipulate others. Rather, within this particular narrative, Joseph’s actions allowed the truth about his brothers’ hearts and attitudes to become visible.

He wanted to understand whether they had changed since the day they had sold him.

Forgiveness and Reconciliation

The story eventually moves toward reconciliation between Joseph and his brothers. Genesis 42:23 therefore becomes part of a much larger story about forgiveness.

Joseph had legitimate reasons to feel deeply hurt by what his brothers had done. Yet the story does not end with revenge. Instead, it eventually leads toward restoration.

This is one of the most powerful themes in Joseph’s life: suffering does not have to determine the final outcome of a person’s story.

The brothers’ past sin could not simply be erased, but the relationship could eventually be restored through truth, repentance, forgiveness, and God’s providence.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 42:23

1. God Knows What People Cannot See

Joseph’s brothers thought their words were hidden from him, but Joseph understood them. In the broader biblical teaching, God knows the thoughts, words, and intentions of people even when those things are hidden from others.

This should encourage believers to live honestly before God.

2. The Conscience Remembers

The brothers’ conversation demonstrates that the past can remain powerful in the conscience. Years may pass, but wrongdoing may still trouble the heart.

Rather than ignoring guilt, people should bring their failures honestly before God and seek reconciliation where appropriate.

3. Patience Can Reveal Truth

Joseph did not immediately reveal everything he knew. He listened and observed.

There are circumstances in which patience allows people to understand a situation more clearly before making an important decision.

4. God Can Bring Good Out of Difficult Circumstances

Joseph’s life demonstrates God’s providence. What appeared to be a series of disasters eventually became part of a story in which Joseph helped preserve his family and many others from famine.

5. Forgiveness Can Break the Cycle of Revenge

Joseph’s story ultimately points away from revenge and toward reconciliation. His experience reminds readers that forgiveness can become part of God’s work of restoring damaged relationships.

“And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.”
