English Explanation
1. “And God Almighty give you mercy”
Jacob begins with a prayer. He does not simply send his sons away with instructions; he asks God Almighty to show them mercy.
The name “God Almighty” reminds us of God’s power. Jacob was facing circumstances that were beyond his ability to control. He could not personally travel with his sons and guarantee their safety. He could not change the ruler’s command in Egypt. He could not remove the famine from the land. Therefore, he turned his attention toward God.
The word “mercy” is especially meaningful. Jacob was asking that the man in Egypt would treat his sons favorably and compassionately. The brothers needed kindness from someone who possessed authority over their situation.
This teaches us that prayer is important when circumstances are outside our control. There are moments when careful planning is necessary, but there are also moments when a person must acknowledge that ultimate outcomes are not in human hands.
2. “Before the man”
The “man” referred to here was the powerful ruler of Egypt who had authority over the distribution of food. Jacob did not yet know the full truth about Joseph. From Jacob’s perspective, his sons were going before a powerful Egyptian official.
Jacob therefore prayed that God would grant them mercy before the man.
This shows an important biblical principle: God can work through human decisions and circumstances. A person may stand before an important official, employer, authority, or leader, but the believer can still pray for God’s favor and mercy.
Jacob’s prayer was not based on his own ability to control the ruler. Instead, he placed the situation before God.
3. “That he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin”
Jacob wanted two sons to be returned safely: Simeon, who had been kept in Egypt, and Benjamin, whom he was now sending with the brothers.
Earlier, the brothers had returned from Egypt without Simeon because the Egyptian ruler had demanded that Benjamin accompany them on their next journey. Now Jacob understood that Benjamin had to go if the family was to obtain more food.
Jacob therefore prayed that the Egyptian ruler would release Simeon and allow Benjamin to return.
This reveals Jacob’s deep concern for his family. He was not thinking only about food or survival. He was concerned about the safety and future of his children.
4. “If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved”
These final words are among the most emotionally powerful parts of the verse.
Jacob recognized that he could not completely control what would happen. He had already experienced tremendous grief because of Joseph’s disappearance. Now he was afraid that Benjamin might also be lost.
When Jacob says, “If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved,” he expresses a willingness to accept the outcome after doing what he believed was necessary.
This should not be understood as hopelessness. Rather, it demonstrates surrender in the middle of uncertainty. Jacob had reached a point where he could no longer protect his family through his own decisions alone.
He had prepared a gift, sent the necessary money, and instructed his sons carefully. Now he committed the outcome to God.
5. Faith in the middle of uncertainty
Genesis 43:14 is a powerful example of faith during a difficult situation.
Jacob did not know what would happen next. He had no guarantee that everything would go according to his wishes. Nevertheless, he called upon God Almighty.
Faith does not always mean knowing exactly how a situation will end. Sometimes faith means continuing to trust God while the ending is still unknown.
Jacob’s situation also demonstrates that people can experience fear while still turning toward God. Fear and faith can exist together during difficult circumstances. What matters is where a person ultimately places their trust.
6. God can provide mercy in difficult circumstances
Jacob asked that mercy be given before the Egyptian ruler. The story that follows shows that the situation develops in ways Jacob could not have anticipated.
The reader knows something Jacob does not yet know: Joseph is alive and is the powerful ruler of Egypt who is interacting with his brothers.
This creates dramatic tension in the story. Jacob believes he is sending Benjamin into danger, while God is working through circumstances that will eventually bring the family toward restoration.
This reminds us that people often see only one part of a situation. God may be working through circumstances that are not yet understood.
Urdu Explanation
1. “And God Almighty give you mercy”
2. “Before the man”
3. “That he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin”
4. “If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved”
