Historical and Biblical Context
Genesis 44 takes place during the famine that affected the land of Canaan and Egypt. Joseph had become a powerful administrator in Egypt and was responsible for distributing grain during the famine. His brothers came to Egypt because their family needed food.
Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. Instead of immediately revealing his identity, Joseph tested them. Benjamin was especially important because Joseph wanted to know whether his brothers had changed since the time when they had sold him.
Joseph instructed his steward to place his special silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. After the brothers had left the city, Joseph’s servant followed them and accused them of taking the cup. The brothers were confident that none of them had stolen anything. However, the cup was discovered in Benjamin’s sack.
When Benjamin was found with the cup, the brothers faced a terrible situation. They knew that Benjamin’s safety mattered greatly to their father Jacob. Their response in Genesis 44:13 demonstrates their sorrow and willingness to stand with their youngest brother.
“Then they rent their clothes”
The phrase “rent their clothes” refers to an ancient expression of extreme grief, distress, or mourning. Tearing one’s clothing was a visible way of expressing deep sorrow.
The brothers did not respond with indifference. They immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation. Benjamin was facing punishment, and they knew how deeply Jacob loved him.
Their grief also carries an important connection to their past. When Joseph had disappeared many years earlier, Jacob had mourned deeply. The brothers had witnessed their father’s suffering after Joseph was taken away.
Now they were confronted with another situation involving the son of Rachel.
The tearing of their clothes therefore communicates more than ordinary sadness. It shows that the brothers understood the emotional and family consequences of losing Benjamin.
“And laded every man his ass”
After tearing their clothes, the brothers loaded their belongings onto their donkeys. The word “laded” means loaded or placed their belongings upon the animals.
Normally, the brothers would have continued their journey home. However, the discovery of the cup changed everything.
They were no longer simply travelers returning to Canaan with food. They were now returning to the city because Benjamin had been accused and was in danger.
This detail also shows that they did not abandon Benjamin. They turned back together.
“And returned to the city”
The final part of the verse says that the brothers “returned to the city.”
This return is significant because they were not running away from the problem. They could have continued their journey without Benjamin, but they did not do so.
Their actions demonstrate a major change in their character.
Earlier in Genesis, Joseph’s brothers had been willing to separate themselves from him. In Genesis 44, however, they remained united with Benjamin. The following verses show Judah especially pleading for Benjamin and offering himself in Benjamin’s place.
This is an important part of the larger story of repentance and transformation.
The Brothers’ Change of Heart
One of the major themes of Genesis 44 is the transformation of Joseph’s brothers.
When Joseph was young, his brothers had acted against him because of jealousy and resentment. Their actions caused enormous suffering for Joseph and their father Jacob.
Years later, they faced a similar situation. Benjamin was now the favored son of Rachel and was deeply loved by Jacob.
Joseph’s test exposed whether his brothers would again sacrifice a favored brother for their own benefit.
Genesis 44:13 shows that they did not abandon Benjamin.
Their response prepares the way for Judah’s speech in Genesis 44:18–34. Judah explains how deeply Benjamin’s absence would affect their father and even offers himself as a servant in Benjamin’s place.
This demonstrates that the brothers were no longer behaving as they had years earlier.
A Lesson About Responsibility
Genesis 44:13 teaches an important lesson about responsibility. When the brothers discovered that Benjamin was in serious trouble, they did not simply leave him behind.
True responsibility often means remaining with others when circumstances become difficult.
The brothers had made serious mistakes in the past, but their actions in this chapter show evidence of a changed attitude. They were willing to face the consequences of Benjamin’s situation together.
This does not erase their earlier wrongdoing, but it shows that people can change their behavior and respond differently when faced with similar circumstances.
A Lesson About Family
The verse also emphasizes the importance of family relationships.
Jacob had already suffered greatly because he believed Joseph was dead. Benjamin was especially precious to him. The brothers understood this.
Their decision to return to the city demonstrated that they cared about what would happen to their father and Benjamin.
The story reminds readers that our choices can affect not only ourselves but also the people who love us.
A Lesson About Repentance
Genesis 44 is an important part of the Bible’s larger theme of repentance and transformation.
Joseph’s brothers had previously caused him great harm. Now they were given an opportunity to show whether they had changed.
Their grief over Benjamin and their decision to return with him provide evidence of a different attitude.
Repentance is not merely saying that something was wrong. Genuine change can be demonstrated through different actions when similar circumstances arise.
The brothers’ behavior toward Benjamin became an important sign that their hearts had changed.
