English Explanation

Genesis 46:5 describes an important moment in the life of Jacob and his family. After God appeared to Jacob in visions during the night and assured him that he should not be afraid to go down into Egypt, Jacob began the journey. This verse shows that the promises of God were being put into action. Jacob did not remain in Beersheba; he rose up and moved forward with his entire household.

The verse begins with the words, “And Jacob rose up from Beersheba.” Beersheba was an important place in the history of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jacob had lived in the land of Canaan, but the severe famine had created a serious need for food. His son Joseph, whom Jacob had believed was dead for many years, was now alive in Egypt and had been given authority to provide food during the famine.

Jacob had already received a message that Joseph was alive. When he learned this, he was deeply encouraged. Yet moving to Egypt was a major decision because Canaan was the land connected with the promises God had made to his family. Therefore, Jacob needed reassurance from God. Genesis 46:3 records God’s words: “I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt.” God also promised that He would make Jacob’s family into a great nation there.

Genesis 46:5 follows that divine assurance. Jacob now rises from Beersheba and begins the journey.

The verse says that “the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father.” This does not necessarily mean that they physically carried him for the entire journey. The context indicates that they transported him and helped him travel with the family. Jacob was an elderly man, and the journey to Egypt was long. His sons therefore took responsibility for helping their father.

This part of the verse teaches an important lesson about family responsibility. Jacob had spent many years caring for his children, and now his sons were helping him in his old age. Their actions demonstrated practical care and respect for their father.

The verse also mentions “their little ones, and their wives.” Jacob’s migration was not simply an individual journey. The whole family was moving together. The descendants of Israel were beginning an important stage in their history.

The family included Jacob, his sons, grandchildren, and other members of the household. They were leaving their established life in Canaan and traveling to Egypt because of the famine and because Joseph had prepared a place for them.

This movement is significant because the family that would eventually become the nation of Israel was gathering together in Egypt. God had already told Jacob that He would make him a great nation there. What looked like a temporary migration would become a major part of the biblical story.

The verse further says that they traveled “in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.” These wagons were provided by Pharaoh through Joseph. Earlier in the chapter, Joseph had told his brothers to return to Canaan, bring their father, their households, and their possessions, and come to Egypt. Pharaoh had approved this arrangement and supplied transportation.

This detail demonstrates the remarkable change in Joseph’s circumstances. Joseph had once been sold by his brothers and taken away from his family. Now he was in a position of authority in Egypt and was able to provide transportation for his father and family.

The wagons therefore represent more than transportation. They are evidence of the provision that God had arranged through Joseph’s position in Egypt. Years earlier, Jacob could not have imagined that Joseph would become the means through which the entire family would be rescued from famine.

There is also a powerful theme of restoration in this passage. Jacob had experienced deep sorrow because he believed Joseph had died. Now he was traveling to Egypt to see Joseph again. The journey was therefore not only about escaping famine; it was also the beginning of a long-awaited family reunion.

Genesis 46:5 can also teach believers about trusting God during major transitions. Jacob had to leave a familiar place and enter an unfamiliar land. The future was not completely visible to him, but God’s promise gave him confidence.

Faith does not always mean knowing every detail of what will happen next. Sometimes it means taking the next step after receiving God’s direction and assurance. Jacob’s journey illustrates this principle clearly.

Another important theme is God’s providence. The events surrounding Jacob’s move to Egypt had developed over many years. Joseph’s brothers had sold him, Joseph had suffered in Egypt, and eventually Joseph had risen to a position of great authority. Through these circumstances, God had prepared a way to preserve Jacob’s family during the famine.

What appeared to be a series of painful and unexpected events was becoming part of a larger purpose.

Genesis 46:5 therefore connects several important biblical themes: family, provision, restoration, obedience, faith, and God’s continuing purpose. Jacob’s journey was not merely a geographical move from Beersheba to Egypt. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Israel.

For modern readers, this verse can encourage us when circumstances require a major change. A person may not understand every reason behind a difficult transition, but Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the importance of trusting God’s guidance. Jacob moved forward because God had spoken to him and promised to be with him.

The verse also reminds families of the importance of caring for one another. Jacob’s sons helped their father, brought their families together, and traveled as one household. Their journey demonstrates the value of unity and responsibility during difficult times.

Ultimately, Genesis 46:5 points toward the fulfillment of God’s promises to Jacob. The family was entering Egypt, where it would grow into a great people. God was continuing the covenant story that had begun with Abraham, continued through Isaac, and now involved Jacob and his descendants.
