English Explanation
1. Jacob’s Journey to Pharaoh
Genesis 47 takes place during a severe famine. Jacob’s son Joseph had become a high-ranking official in Egypt, and Joseph was responsible for managing the country’s food supply during the famine. When Jacob learned that Joseph was alive and living in Egypt, he eventually traveled there with his family.
Jacob’s arrival in Egypt was significant because he had spent most of his life in the land connected with God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and himself. His journey to Egypt was therefore not simply an ordinary migration. It was part of the larger story through which God was preserving Jacob’s family.
When Jacob appeared before Pharaoh, Pharaoh asked about his age and listened to Jacob describe the years of his life. Jacob explained that his years had been difficult and that his life had been relatively short compared with the years of his ancestors.
Despite his difficult circumstances, Jacob remained connected to God and to the promises given to his family.
2. “And Jacob Blessed Pharaoh”
The most striking part of Genesis 47:10 is the statement that Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
Pharaoh was the ruler of Egypt. He possessed political authority, wealth, and influence. Jacob, by contrast, was an elderly man who had entered Egypt with his family because of famine.
Yet Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
In the biblical context, a blessing can express a prayer or declaration of God’s favor and goodness. Jacob’s action demonstrates that his relationship with God was more important than his social position.
The scene also reminds readers that worldly authority and spiritual significance are not necessarily the same thing. Pharaoh had authority over Egypt, but Jacob belonged to the family through which God had made covenant promises.
Jacob did not need to be the political ruler of Egypt to have spiritual importance.
3. A Lesson About Humility
Jacob’s blessing of Pharaoh can also teach us about humility.
Jacob had every reason to recognize Pharaoh’s authority. Pharaoh had welcomed Jacob’s family into Egypt and allowed them to settle in the land of Goshen. Jacob therefore showed appropriate respect toward the ruler.
At the same time, Jacob’s blessing shows that respect does not mean that a person must believe that worldly power is the highest form of authority.
Jacob approached Pharaoh respectfully, spoke honestly about his life, blessed him, and then departed.
This is a picture of dignity without pride.
4. God Can Work Through Unexpected Circumstances
Jacob’s family came to Egypt because of famine, but God was using these circumstances for a much larger purpose.
Joseph had been sold into slavery by his brothers years earlier. Through a long series of events, Joseph eventually became an important leader in Egypt. His position allowed him to preserve food during the famine and protect his family.
What appeared to be a series of painful and unexpected events was being used within God’s larger plan.
Genesis 47:10 therefore fits into the broader theme of God’s providence. God can work through circumstances that people do not immediately understand.
Jacob’s arrival before Pharaoh was one part of a much larger story involving Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and the future nation of Israel.
5. Jacob’s Life Was Not Defined Only by Hardship
Jacob had described his years as difficult. He had experienced family conflict, separation from Joseph, uncertainty, travel, and sorrow.
Yet when Jacob stood before Pharaoh, his life still carried meaning.
His difficult experiences did not cancel God’s promises.
This is an important spiritual lesson. Difficult seasons can shape a person’s character and testimony without being the final definition of that person’s life.
Jacob had experienced suffering, but he was also able to bless another person.
6. “And Went Out From Before Pharaoh”
The second part of the verse says:
“and went out from before Pharaoh.”
After the meeting, Jacob simply departed.
The statement is brief, but it gives a sense of completion to the encounter. Jacob had appeared before Pharaoh, spoken with him, blessed him, and then left.
The verse does not describe Jacob trying to gain additional power or status. He did not remain before Pharaoh merely to seek greater recognition.
His purpose was fulfilled, and he went out.
This can remind readers that faithful living is not always about receiving public recognition. Sometimes a person’s influence is found in a simple conversation, a prayer, a blessing, or a faithful testimony.
Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 47:10
God Is Greater Than Human Status
Pharaoh was one of the most powerful people in Egypt, but Jacob’s identity was not determined by Pharaoh’s authority.
The verse encourages believers to remember that worldly position is temporary. Wealth, political power, social status, and influence can change. God’s purposes, however, continue beyond individual circumstances.
A Person Can Bless Others Even in Difficult Times
Jacob was living through a famine, yet he still blessed Pharaoh.
This demonstrates that difficult circumstances do not necessarily prevent a person from encouraging or blessing others.
A person does not need to have everything perfect before being able to show kindness, gratitude, prayer, or encouragement.
Respect and Faith Can Exist Together
Jacob respected Pharaoh as ruler while remaining faithful to God.
This provides an example of showing proper respect toward authorities without allowing worldly authority to become the center of one’s faith.
God Works Through Families and Generations
The meeting between Jacob and Pharaoh is part of the larger story of God’s work through Abraham’s descendants.
God’s promises had passed from Abraham to Isaac and from Isaac to Jacob. Joseph’s role in Egypt was also connected to this continuing story.
Genesis 47:10 therefore should not be viewed as an isolated sentence. It belongs to a much larger biblical narrative about God’s faithfulness.
Genesis 47:10 — Urdu Explanation
“And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.”
