English Explanation
1. Pharaoh Asked About Their Occupation
The passage begins with Pharaoh asking Joseph’s brothers, “What is your occupation?”
This question was practical. Pharaoh wanted to know who these men were and what work they did. Joseph had already told Pharaoh that his family had arrived from Canaan, but now the brothers themselves had an opportunity to explain their profession.
Their answer was straightforward:
“Thy servants are shepherds.”
They did not try to hide their occupation or present themselves as something different. Shepherding was the work that they and their fathers had practiced.
This teaches an important principle about honesty. When we are asked about our circumstances, abilities, or work, there is value in speaking truthfully. The brothers did not attempt to impress Pharaoh by claiming a position they did not possess.
2. They Identified Themselves as Shepherds
The brothers said that they were shepherds, “both we, and also our fathers.”
Shepherding was not simply a temporary occupation for them. It was part of their family’s way of life. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had also been associated with flocks and herds.
Their answer connected them with their family history. Their identity and livelihood had been shaped by generations of pastoral life.
The statement also helps explain why Goshen was appropriate for them. A region with good pasture would allow them to continue caring for their animals.
3. They Described Themselves as Sojourners
The brothers told Pharaoh:
“For to sojourn in the land are we come.”
The word sojourn carries the idea of staying temporarily rather than claiming permanent ownership. They were not presenting themselves as people who had come to take control of Egyptian territory. They were refugees from a severe famine who needed a place where their families and animals could survive.
This shows humility in their request. They recognized that they were guests in Pharaoh’s land and approached him respectfully.
Their words also demonstrate awareness of their dependence on circumstances beyond their control. The famine had made it impossible for them to maintain their flocks normally in Canaan.
4. The Famine Was Severe
The brothers explained:
“For thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan.”
This statement connects their personal situation with the larger famine described throughout Genesis 41–47.
The famine was not merely an inconvenience. It affected food supplies, agriculture, livestock, families, and entire communities. The brothers’ livestock required pasture, but the continuing famine had made adequate pasture unavailable.
Their request therefore had a practical purpose: they needed a place where their animals could survive.
5. They Asked to Dwell in Goshen
The brothers concluded:
“Now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
Their request was respectful and direct. They asked Pharaoh for permission to settle in Goshen.
Goshen was suitable for shepherds because it was a productive area for livestock. Joseph had already instructed his family to settle there, and now the brothers formally presented their request before Pharaoh.
The passage therefore demonstrates how Joseph’s position in Egypt became a means of preserving his family during a time of widespread famine.
6. God’s Providence in Joseph’s Story
Although these verses focus on a conversation with Pharaoh, they form part of a much larger story about God’s providence.
Years earlier, Joseph had been separated from his family and taken to Egypt. His brothers had sold him, and at the time they could not have understood how their actions would affect the future.
Yet Joseph eventually became a powerful administrator in Egypt. Through his position, food was stored before the famine and later distributed during the crisis.
Now Joseph was able to provide a place for his father and brothers.
This does not mean that the wrong actions committed against Joseph were themselves good. Rather, Genesis shows how God can work through difficult circumstances to accomplish His purposes and preserve people.
7. Honesty and Humility
One of the clearest lessons from these verses is the value of honesty.
The brothers simply said:
“We are shepherds.”
They did not exaggerate their status. They did not attempt to create a more impressive image of themselves before Pharaoh.
Their humility is also visible in the language they used. They repeatedly referred to themselves as “thy servants.” This was a respectful way of speaking to Pharaoh.
For modern readers, the principle remains valuable: people do not need to pretend to be something they are not in order to ask for legitimate help.
8. Family Provision
The brothers were not requesting Goshen merely for personal comfort. Their families and livestock depended upon finding a suitable place during the famine.
The entire household of Jacob had moved to Egypt because of the food crisis. Their survival required planning and provision.
Joseph’s role in Egypt therefore became closely connected with his responsibility toward his family. The passage reminds readers that family responsibility can require wisdom, sacrifice, planning, and practical action.
9. A Place of Preservation
Goshen would become an important location for Jacob’s descendants. In the immediate context, it provided pasture and security for the family during famine.
The settlement in Goshen also becomes significant in the larger story of Genesis and Exodus. Jacob’s family would grow there, and later generations would become the people of Israel.
Therefore, Genesis 47:3–4 is more than a record of where shepherds wanted to live. It is part of the transition from the patriarchal family of Jacob toward the development of the nation of Israel.
Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 47:3–4
Be Honest About Your Circumstances
The brothers openly explained who they were and why they had come. Honesty allows people to understand a situation clearly and respond appropriately.
Ask Humbly
Their request to Pharaoh was respectful. They did not demand Goshen; they asked for permission to dwell there.
Recognize Practical Needs
Faith does not eliminate the need for practical decisions. The brothers recognized that their flocks needed pasture and therefore sought an appropriate place to live.
Remember God’s Providence
Joseph’s journey from Canaan to Egypt had included suffering and uncertainty, but his position eventually became an instrument through which his family received provision.
Family Can Require Responsibility
Jacob’s family needed protection, food, and suitable land. The passage highlights the importance of caring for those who depend upon us.
“And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.
They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
