Detailed Explanation in English

“And it came to pass after these things”

The verse begins with the expression, “And it came to pass after these things.” This connects Genesis 48 to the events that came before it.

Joseph had risen to a position of great authority in Egypt. During the famine, he was responsible for administering food and helping preserve many lives. Jacob and his entire family eventually came to Egypt, where Joseph was reunited with his father after many years.

Jacob had already lived in Egypt for a period of time. He knew that his earthly life was coming toward its conclusion. Genesis 48 therefore moves the story toward the final days of Jacob’s life.

The phrase also reminds readers that important events often take place after long periods of waiting. Joseph’s life had included betrayal, slavery, imprisonment, and eventually great authority. Yet the story was not finished. Another important stage was now beginning.

“That one told Joseph”

Someone came to Joseph with information about Jacob’s condition. The verse does not identify this messenger by name. The important point is that Joseph was informed that his father was sick.

This small detail shows that Joseph was not physically present with Jacob when the news arrived. Joseph had responsibilities in Egypt, while Jacob and the family were living elsewhere.

The message required Joseph to make a decision. His father was elderly and sick, so Joseph needed to go and see him.

“Behold, thy father is sick”

The words “Behold, thy father is sick” communicate urgency.

Jacob was not simply an ordinary elderly man in the story. He was Joseph’s father, the son of Isaac, and the grandson of Abraham. He was also the father of the family from which the tribes of Israel would develop.

For Joseph personally, however, Jacob was first of all his beloved father.

Joseph had already experienced the pain of losing many years with him. His brothers had sold Joseph into slavery, and Jacob had believed for years that Joseph was dead. Their eventual reunion was one of the most moving events in Joseph’s story.

Now Joseph learns that Jacob is sick. The situation is therefore especially significant because Joseph understands that he may be approaching his father’s final days.

“And he took with him his two sons”

Joseph does not go to Jacob alone. He takes his two sons with him.

This detail is important because Manasseh and Ephraim were Joseph’s children, but they were also part of the larger family of Jacob. By bringing them to their grandfather, Joseph places the next generation directly into this important family moment.

The decision also demonstrates family unity. Joseph wants his sons to be present with Jacob as Jacob’s life draws toward its conclusion.

In the following verses, Jacob will speak about these two boys and bless them. Their position in the family becomes especially important.

“Manasseh and Ephraim”

The verse specifically names Joseph’s two sons: Manasseh and Ephraim.

Manasseh was Joseph’s firstborn son, while Ephraim was his second son. They had been born in Egypt before the arrival of Jacob’s family.

Their names also carry memories of Joseph’s life. Earlier, Joseph explained the meaning of their names in connection with his experiences in Egypt. Manasseh was associated with God helping Joseph forget his hardship, while Ephraim was associated with God making him fruitful in the land of his suffering.

In Genesis 48, these two sons become central to Jacob’s blessing. Jacob adopts them into a position of special significance among his sons, and the blessings given to them affect the future of the tribes of Israel.

Therefore, Genesis 48:1 serves as the doorway to a major family and spiritual event.

Spiritual Lessons from Genesis 48:1

1. Family relationships remain important

Joseph was one of the most powerful men in Egypt, yet when he heard that his father was sick, he went to him.

Position, wealth, and authority did not make Joseph forget his family. The verse encourages readers to value parents and family relationships.

2. Life on earth is temporary

Jacob’s sickness reminds us that human life has a beginning and an end. Even a person who has lived through extraordinary circumstances eventually reaches the end of earthly life.

Genesis 48 therefore encourages reflection on how a person lives, what legacy is left behind, and what is passed to the next generation.

3. The next generation matters

Joseph brought Manasseh and Ephraim with him. This demonstrates the importance of passing family values, faith, wisdom, and blessings from one generation to another.

Jacob’s final interactions with his grandchildren would become part of the history of God’s people.

4. God can work through difficult circumstances

Joseph’s family had endured betrayal, separation, famine, and suffering. Yet these circumstances did not prevent God’s purposes from continuing.

Joseph’s sons, born in Egypt, would become important figures in the future history of Israel. Genesis 48 reminds readers that difficult circumstances do not necessarily mean that God’s work has stopped.

“And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.” — Genesis 48:1 (KJV)
