English Explanation

1. “And he blessed Joseph”

Jacob begins by blessing Joseph. Joseph had experienced an extraordinary journey. He had been separated from his family, sold into slavery, taken to Egypt, falsely accused, imprisoned, and eventually elevated to a position of great authority.

Despite these dramatic changes, Joseph remained connected to the purposes of God. By the time of Genesis 48, Joseph had become the father of Ephraim and Manasseh, and Jacob was preparing to bless these children as part of the family inheritance.

The blessing demonstrates that God’s purposes can continue through circumstances that appear completely unexpected. Joseph’s life had not followed an easy path, but God had remained faithful.

2. “God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk”

Jacob identifies God as the God of his fathers, Abraham and Isaac. This connects the present generation with the generations that came before it.

Abraham and Isaac had walked before God, and Jacob understood himself as part of the same spiritual history. The phrase “did walk” communicates a life lived in relationship with God.

Jacob’s words remind readers that faith is not simply about knowing facts about God. It involves living one’s life before Him. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob each experienced different circumstances, but God’s covenant purposes continued through their lives.

This also emphasizes the importance of passing faith from one generation to another. Jacob wanted Joseph’s children to understand that they belonged to a family whose history was connected with God’s promises.

3. “The God which fed me all my life long unto this day”

This is one of the most personal statements in the passage.

Jacob looks back and says that God had fed him throughout his entire life. The word “fed” points beyond food alone. It communicates God’s continuing provision and care.

Jacob had lived through many seasons. There were times when his family had wealth and times when they faced serious difficulty. He had experienced joy, sorrow, conflict, reconciliation, and loss.

Yet when he summarizes his life, he recognizes God’s sustaining hand.

This provides an important lesson about remembering God’s faithfulness. People may focus heavily on individual difficulties, but Jacob looks at the whole journey. He sees that God had continued to provide for him.

The verse therefore presents God as the faithful provider who remains present through changing circumstances.

4. “The Angel which redeemed me from all evil”

Jacob next refers to “The Angel which redeemed me from all evil.”

This expression highlights God’s protection and deliverance. Jacob had encountered numerous dangers during his life. He had faced family conflict, uncertainty, dangerous journeys, and situations in which his future was unclear.

When Jacob looks back, he sees that he had not been preserved by his own strength alone. He attributes his deliverance to God’s care.

The word “redeemed” carries the idea of rescue and deliverance. Jacob is remembering the One who had protected and delivered him through the troubles of life.

This does not mean Jacob experienced a life without problems. Rather, it shows that God’s presence and faithfulness remained with him even during difficult experiences.

5. “Bless the lads”

Jacob now asks for the blessing to rest upon Ephraim and Manasseh.

The word “lads” refers to Joseph’s sons. Jacob was not only concerned about his own generation. He was thinking about what would happen after his death.

This is an important picture of spiritual legacy. A person may eventually leave this world, but the values, faith, prayers, and teachings passed to the next generation can continue.

Jacob’s prayer shows his desire for God’s blessing to accompany Joseph’s children as they moved into the future.

6. “Let my name be named on them”

Jacob asks that his name be associated with these children. This connects Ephraim and Manasseh with the covenant family.

The statement emphasizes belonging and identity. They were not simply Joseph’s children living in Egypt; they were also part of the family through which God’s promises had been carried forward.

This is important because Joseph had lived in Egypt for many years. His children had been born in a foreign land and had grown up in Egyptian surroundings. Jacob’s blessing reminds them of their family identity and heritage.

7. “And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac”

Jacob also invokes the names of Abraham and Isaac. The blessing therefore reaches backward as well as forward.

Abraham represents the beginning of an important stage in the covenant story. Isaac continued that family line, Jacob followed Isaac, and now Joseph’s children were being incorporated into the continuing family inheritance.

The passage demonstrates how biblical faith is presented across generations. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Ephraim, and Manasseh are connected within one unfolding story.

8. “Let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth”

Jacob concludes his blessing with a request for growth and multiplication.

This recalls God’s earlier promises concerning the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The family was not meant to disappear. Instead, Jacob prayed that Joseph’s sons would become numerous and continue the family line.

The blessing therefore contains both spiritual and generational significance.
